Noob questions for a comp

Hey Rev,

Calling comp genius, I got an old hard drive running on XP (i think its 32bit). I need a comp just for my tv for movies or what not... however my old comp keeps overheating ( its the processor and gpu) so i figured I should get a net book for now, . The problem isfor the same price i can build a better comp for the price. I know these parts are junk, i just need a cheap comp for youtube or whatever.

Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P AMD760G mATX AM3 AM3+
XFX Radeon HD 6450 625MHZ 512MB
Corsair CMV4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB
AMD Athlon II X3 450 Triple Core Processor AM3 3.2GHZ
Apex Solytech SL-275TFX SFF 275W

my questions is will it run with my old hard drive. If it does.. this will only cost me $223.00 if not.. ill have to buy a new OS.

any suggestions/opinions?

Thanks guys!

If your old hard drive is a sata drive then yes it will run, but if its SUPER old and is IDE, then it will not run with that board natively, although IDE to sata adapters are fairly cheap.

What I don't understand is the part about the OS. Even if you get a new hard drive, why wouldn't you be able to keep the OS? If you have a retail copy, then you can use it as many times as you want assuming that it is only being used on one system at a time. If it is an OEM OS disc, then legally you shouldn't be re-using the license after you swap parts with it as OEM licenses are tied down to the system.

This is of course, speaking legally *cough*

most likely your old hard drive will be IDE if its xp.
i would suggest you get a hard drive or an ssd to run since the motherboard doesn't have an IDE slot.

Microsoft limits to one... then you have to call them if you change hardware since it thinks your installing on another machine with the same key.
Most likely you will have to reinstall windows on it when you get the new hardware since xp sucks at recognizing the new hardware and booting successfully

Thank man, OK so i ran out to Ncix and i ended up with ( if any1 cares, this is for future ref if anyone needs. XP pro, running on AM2 chipset, switch over to AM3,AM3+ works, with the following. Make sure ur Motherboard is compatible with XP and that it has its own onboard gpu just to get u booted and looking on the screen for updates. U will need to reinstall ALL drivers and delete old.)

ASUS M5A78L-M
ASUS HD 6570 1Gg
AMD Athlon II 3-core
1 stick of 4g ram

Total about $360 all in. good for basically everyday computing, and u noe what else.... plus a lil old school gaming.

Everything is running good. HOWEVER as lilaznviper is sayin, its telling me too much has changed and i need to reinstall/re activate my OS which shouldnt be hard since i have all my keys and cd (yes i found it.)

THANKS guys and thanks RS

Umpadupa: If all you're going to do is basic stuff, etc then maybe you should get the barebone kit instead. By the way, how come you got a video card? Onboard should be fine for most tasks.

also for future reference, i would spend some time trying to correct the overheating problem.
Many times you can just reapply new thermal paste to the CPU ($7), and even a new graphics card will be < $50 for your purposes.
