2012 Autocross Season - VCMC, UBCSCC, PCA

I've been casually going to autocross for years, it's honestly a lot of fun and a good relatively cheap way to push your car to the limit, legally.
Most people new to autocross ask these kinds of questions:
Q: "But my car is stock, should I still go?"
A: Yes. The stock classes are some of the biggest ones. And it's frickin fun pushing your car in a safe and legal environment. Better here at a wide open airport than out on the street.
Q: "But I don't drive a fast car, what's the point?"
A: Because it's fun no matter what you drive. And people come in automatic TSX's and Yaris's and they do great. You're also placed into a class according to what car you drive, and within your class, it's all driver skill.
Q: "Won't this screw up my car?"
A: No. And each run is 40-50 seconds long, ~6 runs per autocross event, for a total of 4 to 5 minutes.
Q: "Does it cost a lot?"
A: No.
Q: "I don't have a helmet?"
A: They provide them. Just show up.
You have three choices when it comes to autocross in Vancouver. VCMC, UBCSCC, and PCA (Porsche Club). All three are open to anyone with any vehicle (unless you drive an SUV, I don't believe those are allowed), of any skill or experience level. Turns out a lot of us on Revscene drop in to all three, so chances are, if you post on here to ask about it, a few others will be going. Information is listed below.
VCMC is one of the bigger ones and has the Novice Championship Tour. If you've had less than three events under your belt, you're eligible to run under this.
VCMC Autocross Schedule:
April 8, 2012
April 29, 2012
May 13, 2012
June 3, 2012
July 28, 2012

2012 VCMC Auto-X Cup -- Featuring NCT
Ladies and Gentlemen, the 2012 autocross season is finally upon us, and we are proud to present a new format to the VCMC hosted autocross series of yesteryear. We have combined the VCMC Series and Novice Championship Tour (aka NCT) into a sleeker and more efficient package that is the 2012 VCMC Auto-X Cup!
For Novices (i.e. those with 3 or fewer autocross events prior to the 2012 calendar year), the NCT category (aka. Novice Championship Tour) remains within the VCMC Auto-X Cup. You can observe and learn from the veterans while fighting it out with your fellow Novice competitors!
For Veterans, all your favorite classes still exist in this new series but you all know there is really only one class that matters -- OPAX!
The VCMC Auto-X Cup will be held in a best 4 out of 6 format for all competitors. This event will be held on the FULL pad. No longer are we confined to the rectangular, up, loop around, back courses of the past. There will be extra long sweepers, off camber turns, grip levels changes and all sorts of other challenges to keep autocrossers on our toes!
Your ELT is working hard to line up prizes for the season so please stay tuned and stay hungry for those trophy spots. We are happy to announce that PDM Racing (http://www.pdm-racing.com/) is continuing their ongoing support of the NCT group with prizes to be announced.
Location: BC Driving Center (http://g.co/maps/7gsrn) (Pitt Meadows Airport)
Gates open @ 7:30 am
Tech closes @ 8:15am
Reg closes @ 8:30am (sharp!)
(Please note that these times are strictly enforced and anyone not registered/tech-ed by 8:30am will not be allowed to run. Please allow enough time for car prep and registration.)
Driver's meeting will be held at 9am.
BC Driving Centre, Pitt Meadows (http://g.co/maps/7gsrn) -- How do I get there?

Additionally, breaking these rules at any time during the event will get you banned from all other local autocross events and the BC Driving Center.
If you are NEW to VCMC, please sign-up for 2012 VCMC Membership at the following link. Your first regular autocross event is included in the membership! Just mention on the forum sign up thread that you will be using your free event so we can enter you into the timing system:

If you're not a new member, event is $50 via Karelo. Prices have gone up a little with the newly opened up pad.
UBCSCC also runs a series of autocross events, and it usually works out that the schedules don't overlap - meaning if you're wanting to maximize your autocross time this summer, you'll go to both like a lot of us end up doing :)

+1 for this
dont have to drive a fast car to have fun!
remember to attend NCT (novice champion) and try to win! most importantly have fun!
a stock car is more than enough to be competitive
you have cars that lots of people race that you would think arent capable of!
crx, civics, miata, neon then you have 135i, s2000, 240sx just to name a few
ive placed 3rd in NCT last year, had a very fun season and this was BEFORE we got to use the Full pad
be sure to atleast check this out once!

There is more traffic in VAC, plain and simple. If you have a problem with me spreading awareness, you can PM me with a complaint.
Good point on UBCSCC though, I will add that.
Any stock cars? :alone:
You'll find some stock cars do really well in autox. The biggest deciding factor will be your tires, because stock class in AutoX are allowed to run Racing-Compound tires.
Honestly, I found that having gone to a few autox events, is that comparing yourself to some of the senior drivers is extremely hard, because most of them have been doing it waaaay longer than you have. It's just fun to learn the limits of your car, etc....

Can't wait for this event, the UBC events this year and VCMC's Velocity driving school coming up.
Going to be a great year of autox. With the new pad we will see many more runs, stronger competition and faster courses.

The Sports Car Club of America - About (http://www.scca.com/downloads/)
Go down to Solo, and the 2012 rules are there. It's pretty wordy, as it really depends on what sort of mods you've done to it, whether you belong in Stock, Street Touring, Street Prepared, Street Modified, etc, etc... and then within each of those categories, there's more specific classes.
Unless you haven't done anything, period, then you'll definitely be in stock :P
if that's the case, you'll be in H Stock
*edit* nevermind, you found it...

They'll have course maps there, but you'll also get a chance to walk through the course on foot when you're there. I recommend riding with a senior driver once or twice before you drive if you have the chance, allows you to remember the course better. That or get a senior driver to ride WITH you, and they can help you point out where the turns are and stuff. And definitely take it slow the first time around.

If you're wheels are 7.5" or narrower you fall into STF, IIRC ST doesn't exist for 2012, it's either STF or STC. If your wheels are wider than 7.5" I think you have to run STX

Ah, yeah, read over that freaking SCCA bible of a PDF. They're 7.5", so that fits me into STF. Lucky me that I don't have to run against better cars, but unlucky me since my suspension is stock, and the Street Touring class allows for light modifications.

For first timers, I highly recommend getting a good night's sleep the night before and getting there early. When I say early, I mean as soon as the gates open. Then you can unload your car and change tires if you have to. Get your car teched, registered if you didn't do it online, and most importantly, walk the course 3 or more times so you have an idea of where you will be going when it is your turn to drive the course.
If you can, try to find a senior member to walk with and don't be afraid to ask for help if you are not sure.
Weather reports sunny weather, but just in case, bring a jacket since it may be cold in the morning, and I usually bring a pair of rain boots and an extra pair of socks.

If you are even just wondering whether you should do it, just come out and give it a shot. You never know if you'll like something unless you try it first.
Having said that, the last thing you want to expect at an autox is to get a ton of seat time. By its very nature, you are really only going to get 6 to 8 minutes worth of driving from the whole day. But I guarantee you those 6 - 8 minutes is some of the most fun and intense thing you will ever do in your car. Besides, a day at the autocross isn't just about the driving.
From a seat time's point of view, the best bang for the buck has to be something like the Velocity Driving School (http://www.vcmc.ca/forum/showthread.php?12247-Velocity-1-Registration-April-28). Over the course of the whole day, you'd probably get around 2 hrs worth of seat time + high quality instruction.
If you're wheels are 7.5" or narrower you fall into STF, IIRC ST doesn't exist for 2012, it's either STF or STC. If your wheels are wider than 7.5" I think you have to run STX
The new STX Pax isn't that far off of ST. I'm tempted to throw in an LSD because it won't change my pax that much..... hehe.

SumAznGuy
04-05-2012, 10:51 AM
Depends on the size of the course and how much over lap (the time between the second car leaves and the first car finishes their run) there is.
Porsche clubs are usually less stressfull and the ones I went to were 8-10 runs depending on the turn out.
This VCMC event will probably be 5-6 runs with only the first 3 runs counting to the NCT/VCMC series points.

That is old school mannnnnn.
With the new pad there is no overlap, cars run ever 20 seconds or so if it is all going smoothly. One of the last UBC events saw 8 runs + end of day fun runs.

If you're looking to pick up one quickly most motorcyle shops have a good selection for fairly decent prices. The club also has a number of loaner helmets that you could use.

Thanks! Follow-up question, how strict are organizers (VCMC or UBCSCC) on helmet specs? I've read that SA2000+ is mandatory but could I get away with an "inferior" helmet as long as it's full-face?
SumAznGuy
04-05-2012, 07:34 PM
Doesn't need to be full face as long as it is SA/M/KA2000 and newer.
For 2015, you will need a helmet that is 2005 or newer.

I won't let you use a helmet if I know it's date stamped older than 2000. It's more of an insurance stipulation than anything. We have stinky loaners if you need a helmet. :)
SumAznGuy

For autoX and trackday purposes, the helmets need to be within a specific snell rating. For 2012 VCMC, and UBCSCC require the helmets to be snell 2000 and newer.
Are the 2000 still good now that the 2010 models are out/have been out for a while?
Rule 4.3.1 in the SCCA rulebook, helmets have to be current and 2 previous Snell standards. So 2015 when the new standard is out, then helmets have to be 2015, 2010, and 2005.

Go to any motorcycle shop and TRY on the helmets first.
Not every person's head is the same and different brands fit differently. I can squeeze into a small or med Arai but a large Shark, Shoei and Sumoy will give me a headache.
HJC is a decent brand.

Unless second place demands fairness! Btw it's me lol. I'm not angry but this really is the difference for me between 1st and 2nd. My time was 52.2xx on a clean run.
I might as well for a left turn, hit the inside cone with the right side of my bumper, cut the corner and get 2 seconds penalty but gain more.
I'm not getting all butt hurt but that's just what's going on in my head right now lol. If you really did 49.xxx, I'm not gonna do anything else but congratulate you

Yeah no offense but a novice driver in an automatic corolla on run flats is not going to run a time that keeps up with some of these more experienced drivers with significantly faster cars.

Yes, I ended up "out of gear" for a good amount of the track, so acceleration was sluggish. It's probably a failsafe to prevent over-rev I guess.

Most of the cars in MT will stay in 2nd gear after shifting up. It's very hard on the synchros and gears to shift down from 2nd to 1st. So don't worry about trying to shift down. Most of us aren't always in the best powerband, but there isn't much you can do about it.

I'm glad you had a good experience! One of the things I've learned after doing this for a long time is that sometimes a lap that felt fast will actually be slower. The laps that feel slow, or without drama, are usually your fastest laps.

Fun day of racing! Really cool to see a bunch of new faces and see you guys had fun!
Couldn't have been better conditions for the 1st event of the year for VCMC. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the season with UBC and PCA events! Double Pad FTW!!
Don't forget; if you want to get faster at autox VCMC has their Velocity drivers training coming up April 28th. I'll be instructing with many other experienced fast drivers. Usually there are two-three students per instructor and you spend the day working on different elements of autox helping you understand the sport and get faster!!!. Velocity is also going to be held on the double pad this year, which really opens up our abilities to teach more!

most of us stayed in 2nd gear
but couple of people down shifted to 1st and were running faster times, on my last run i got permission from the owner of the car i was co-driving and managed to cut off 1 second off my fastest lap :fuckyea:

With the double pad events this year I garuntee that you won't have to downshift to 1st this year. The run speed average has come up quite a bit. For instance in the NC miata I drove this weekend, I got into the rev limiter on 6 separate occasions in one run.
The courses are far more flowey and fast now, it is going to be a very exciting year at autocross. Tipping the car into a corner on limiter (95ish km/hr) is a blast.

95ish kph maybe... can't really see many 95 MPH corners ;)
At one of the UBCSCC Slush events this past year, there was an Elise from Oregon who came up for the event. He was downshifting into 1st I think once or twice every lap, but according to a guy who rode with him, he was definitely grinding each downshift... Don't think he was double-shifting, or not double-shifting well... I think he knew what he was doing to his tranny but he didn't care.

Lol that's why we have rev limiters. Although when I autocrossed my Z a few years back it went way past the red line (redline ~6500 IIRC and it went over 7000) and I cooked the coolant. Car was okay afterwards but yeah... didn't have a rev limiter :/

Is UBCSCC going to have any track days this year? It's not posted yet.
Rich Sandor
04-18-2012, 08:48 PM
An average autos run is only sixty seconds, so it's nothing. Compared to a track day where I wind the engine up to near redline for every lap for twenty minutes at a time. Nevermind a actual race where it always redline as soon as the flag drops. I do use a heavier oil in my track cars 15/50 but that's too heavy for a daily drive in the winter. Really autocross is not that hard on your engine, just your tires.

Drive the new Scion FR-S at BC Champs!
BC Autoslalom Championship 2012 (http://www.bcchamps.ca)
Hi folks!
The 2012 BC Autoslalom Championship is being held June 22-24th on the newly expanded 10 acre Pitt Meadows skidpad. This year's BC Champs will start with test and tune on Friday, competition and fun runs on Saturday and will end Sunday with the final day of competition and the weekend highlight - the 'Scion FR-S Equalizer'. All drivers will be given a chance to drive a new Scion FR-S, with top times winning prizes.
Registration is open at BC Autoslalom Championship 2012 (http://www.bcchamps.ca), with an early bird rate of $95 until June 1st. The Ramada Inn is holding rooms at a special rate of $99 (standard room) and $109 (kitchenette) until May 23 - info can be found at www.bcchamps.ca/location/accommodation
Trophies will be awarded to top novice, top PAX, and for all group winners. There will be many other door prizes and cash prizes for drivers. Your entry includes the event t-shirt, free appies at the Saturday afternoon pub social, and entries into all the prize draws. The Lions Club of Maple Ridge will be serving food and refreshments on both Saturday and Sunday. Money raised through food sales will go to support camps for kids.
This event is the first in the three event Western Canadian Slalom Tour that includes a two-day event at Namao Airforce base in Edmonton (July 14-15) and the Super Slalom Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon (Aug 31 - Sept 2). This three city tour celebrates 50 years of ASN in Canada and highlights some of the best venues in Western Canada. Special prizes will be awarded to drivers who participate in at least two of the three events. Info can be found at http://www.bcchamps.ca/2012-western-...an-slalom-tour
Update April 26, 2012
Maple Ridge Lions Club will be at BC Champs serving out coffee, soft drinks, breakfast, lunch and snacks.
If you are planning to attend -and I really hope you are- consider leaving your food at home and buying from the Lions Club instead. Every dollar you spend at their kiosk will go to projects and camps that help kids on the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. The Lions also raises funds for BC Children's Hospital.
The money you spend at the Lions Kiosk will help our future members, BC kids.

Are you gonna be running R Comps?
I wish I could run my R Comps, but I'm pretty sure it'd going to rain... Can't run them in the wet... the AD08's will be so much better.
I want to try them in the wet though, see what they're like. The R Comps were a little too much for me... I couldn't get a good feel of how hard I can push it. I definitely need to lay down power a lot earlier.

There is a steep learning curve with R-comps. They "mask" a lot of driver errors and bad habits.
Street tires is where it is at. Late into the salom, the tires will tell you you are trying too hard to make it up. Late on your braking point, again the tires will tell you.
I'm still undecided if I want to go out this sunday and try the R888's in the wet.

Definitely see where you're coming from. I know I should really focus on getting better, but I just couldn't resist running these! it's so much fun!!
Bought a set of 4 tires used for $80, cost me $50 to mount. Who can say no to $130 for R Comps!!

It isn't that cold anymore, so your fresh-ish AD08's are still gonna hold reasonably well. Wet grip only becomes an issue when they start to get old and heat-cycled out.
I really like these tires. It's just that I am not sure if I can afford them again.

I need some new tires for VCMC event #3, any recommendations?
I was looking at Dunlops Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, but wasnt to sure if that was my best option. Anyone have any recommendations? As long as they are street tires I dont think this would affect the group i'm in..

The star specs are a pretty damn good start. I'm sorry if I've missed it but you're driving an 09 Corolla at autocross?
I personally think the Toyo R1R 195/45 tires are the way to go if you want outright speed.

Thanks Rich. I will look into the Toyo's.
Yup thats right autox in my Corolla she handles very well and is currently holding 1st in vcmc novice. Steve's TSX and my corolla are usually .100 of a second apart from eachother. His TSX makes me want to push harder..
that's you!! I saw you run on sunday, but didn't know you were from RS.
The R1R's are a little aggressive for a daily driver, so it depends on if you're running them everyday, or you will have a dedicated track tire.

For the amount of kms you put on your car every year I don't know if running Star specs for daily would be a good idea (at least on your wallet) For an all rounder I noticed a few of the faster drivers using continental DW which has decent treadwear and fast in the rain (good for slush series)

:alone:
but yeah when I rode in your corolla I found the power to be more than adequate, I think you just need to turn a little earlier and you can shave significant time off. It corners pretty flat too IMO

Yeah, i'm trying to figure out if I should run a separate set of rims or not, which would help on the decision also..
Although I'm not to worried right now about DD since I'm currently driving my beater 93 bmw 325i. Since i've been autox the corolla.

I DD my Starspecs when I had my S2000 but the autoX alignment GG'd the fronts in 5000 km's. On the Rola, it might be better since you can rotate the wheels.

Another set of rims for your car shouldn't be a whole lot of coin either. Having a 2nd set for autox that you could switch out the night before an event would really help. Just my $0.02

The AD08's last surprisingly long apparently. Not sure how they compare to Star Specs though. And since I have a set of winters, it's not THAT bad... I'm hoping they'll last at least 2 or 3 years....

Yeah that's what I've been thinking, a second set I'll throw on the night before would be great. Plus I can find something that's 17x7.5 instead of using the oem 17x7. Pushing that half inch for STF lol

Great idea! I'm not sure the bolt patern of your car.. but this is a great deal in my mind. They don't sell just tires, but wheel/tire combinations. So you can get them mounted and balanced to you (Pt. Bob perhaps) for a good price!

+ 1 for learning in stock cars. I believe shocks are still a free mod in stock class, so some serious competitors get re-valved konis etc to decrease body roll w/o changing springs.
if you learn to push your car to the limit as stock, your skill will go up because you're forced to be a smooth driver. then as you get more skill, add one mod at a time, then you can see what actually makes things faster (or slower) and you'll have a greater appreciation for each mod.

And now it is even easier to be competitive with the Road Tire class! Stock classes still use race tires, but now you can show up with a good set of street tires and have awesome competition!!!

+1 for learning to be smooth driving a stock car first.
Just be advised that in addition to the 92db rule, there is also a strict TIRE noise rule in effect. All-season tires do tend to squeal like pigs when driven at the limit, so be prepared to dial back your aggressiveness if you show up on crappy tires and start over-driving your car!
Don't forget the rear swaybar for FWD cars. Turns the understeering pigs into not so understeering pigs. :okay:
Rear Swaybars won't be legal in Stock Classes though, so I would think about that before putting one in - especially if you're interested in staying in Stock.
But definitely - it's one of the best mods for a non-sports car.
