i've been doing some research on this and getting conflicting results. has anyone actually tried this? any future shop/bestbuy etc guys out there who can give some insight?

you mean lay flat for transport or lay flat for viewing?

my dentist has LCD tv's mounted in the ceiling facing down so I don't see that as a problem.

Lay flat for transport not recommended. Lay flat for viewing is ok.

It's the bumps/thumps during transport that can crack the LCD.

its fine to lay flat, but not recommended because usually in the box there is nothing supporting the screen so its prone to cracking from stress of bumps and etc.

It's fine to lay it flat. There is plenty of protection in those boxes for that TV to be transported flat.

I think you're mistaking the info with plasma tvs. You can't lay a plasma tv down flat for a extended period of time just like a fridge.

I think you guys have all mistaken OP. Pretty sure he was asking about installing a LCD/LED TV flat...like they do at dentists....

If it's just a 5 minute trip home transporting it home from Future Shop, OP wouldn't have even bothered to start a thread about it.

I guess as long as heat won't build up when it is laid flat.

sorry i should of been more clear. I wanted to use an LCD as a coffee table.

maybe I will try with a cheaper brand (ie hisene or whatever they sell at xs cargo)

You'll need to figure out the cooling. TV's have their airflow designed so that the hot air will rise, and generally create their own airflow out of the housing. If you have the screen in the wrong orientation, or in a sealed enclosure (I'm not sure how your coffee table will be), you risk it overheating.

That said, newer tv's in general run much cooler than tv's back in the day. Especially LED edge-lit LCD's. but it's something you'll need to keep in mind.

Mounting it flat won't damage the LCD.

how's that gonna be ergonomically sound? you'll probably break your neck watching a display...in a coffee table. I'm assuming it'll be tilted at an angle..in which case there shouldn't be any worries..as long as you keep it somewhat ventilated.

^ there's lots of those around. Especially at Karaoke's in Asia. But ....I don't think OP's looking for one that's touch screen.
