Where are some of your favourite places to shop for groceries?

I love going to Granville Island for the large selection of produce and meats (though pricier). I find the vegetables to be very fresh compared to other places

Super Grocer in Steveston is great for cheap meat (I wouldn't buy a ribeye steak there but their beef short ribs are hella cheap)

No Thrills/superstore is where I would go for my cereals, toothpaste, soap, etc... Their produce is pretty bad though

Chinatown is fresh and cheap for my Asian vegetables, fresh fish, pork etc...

Urban Fare/Whole Foods is where I might go to get higher end items that I can't find elsewhere (or when I'm feeling like spending more than I need to)

I'd like to hear where everyone else goes to get their stuff!

Nice thread! I really like Trader Joes in the states, certain items from Whole Foods (many things are rip off though).

i like famous foods, but i usually settle for price smart since its closer.
dont care for the meat at price smart too much though.
i go to seafair gourmet meats when i have the time or want something a little more special

I'm cheap when it comes to buying groceries:

T&T/Osaka: the vegetables, meat, snacks, asian foods
Superstore: regular everyday use items (shampoo, milk, eggs, baby diapers, baby formula, tooth brushes, tooth paste)
Price Smart Foods: frozen meat/seafood sometimes at an pretty good price

Walmart in US: eggs( around $1.25 -1.50 per dozen)
Costco in US: frozen poultry, 2x 4L of milk (cheap!!!) and other stuff

Maybe I'm the odd one out then...

Supreme Meats for steak, prime rib, pork belly, ground meats, chicken bones, duck and frozen veggies

Triple A market for veggies and herbs, sometimes their meats are really nice too.

Superstore for dried herbs in the indian section because it's a huge bag for cheaper (fennel, paprika, curry powder etc...). Kosher salt is also a bit cheaper here.

T&T if i want frozen asian foods or fresh asian noodles.

I grew up with fresh seafood (family hookups), so I'll only get seafood from Granville Island. I've yet to find anywhere else with comparable quality mussels, black cod or scallops.

Costco for some staples that are more expensive elsewhere:
extra virgin olive oil (tuscan one, in the glass bottle), sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, black pepper, vanilla extract

Whole Foods/Famous Foods - Certain organic items
Granville Island - Seafood and meats
Gourmet Warehouse - staples like olive oil, spices, etc.

Superstore or Safeway - Everyday things like milk, yogurt, and bread (I know Safeway is expensive, but it's minutes from home)

Kin's Farm - Vegetables and fruit. So fresh and so cheap.

Whole Foods - Certain items like the peppermint body wash :sweetjesus: , Virgil's rootbeer, creamy red pepper and tomato soup, and mint chocolate Cliff Builder's bars

Costco - For things in bulk or things that dont expire for a long time: honey, cereal, juice boxes, frozen fruit (for smoothies) and occasionally their rotisserie chicken

i usually go safeway/superstore

but for cheese deli meat cuts and stuff like that i go to Santa Barbara on commercial drive :thumbsup:

produce i usually just hit up random places on the drive as well

I like Richmond Country Farms for produce but I tend to end up at Granville Island a lot during the summer months as I like the convenience and quality.

Otherwise I tend to shop everywhere else for non-produce (and depends if I check the flyers for sales) and will go out of my way for certain items. I do like Famous Foods, Meinhardt's and Parthenon for harder to find items.

I really need to find a good butcher for meat. How's Beefway on Slocan and Kingsway? Also what's the address for Supreme Meats? The Burnaby address that shows up doesn't look right.

Most product have been backstocked for atleast 4-5 days as they bring in lots at once.



I get most of my stuff @ Tnt/superstore
But produce at Nesters market @ SFU since I work there in produce department I know when the stuff comes in and fresh!

i gave up on Canada already.

1) butter, milk, cheese = USA Fred meyers and Walmart. 2.33 for a block of butter, 6 dollars for a block of cheese that's 15 here, and milk and eggs.. sorry canada, i gotta take my business elsewhere
2) Beef / chicken/ Beef and chicken are jut dirt cheap. 1.09 for chicken and ground beef and steaks.. all USA
3) chinese seafood. T&T is where I go. I don't know why people would go to US to get that... totally weird
4) veggies, china town / richmond / chinese places... although Price smart in richmond is getting pretty good and competitive.

^ Quality of produce in the states is shittier than Canada. Especially dairy.

It depends on the management. I used to work at a Kin's too and during that time we went through three different management teams, all with different ways of pushing products off the shelf.
At a location with good management you can be pretty sure what you're getting is no more than a day or two old from the suppliers at most.


Our household is nice and easy
Fruits & Vegetables= Kin's
Eggs/Milk= Superstore, Costco
Frozen/Canned/Other non-perishables= Superstore, Costco, maybe Safeway
Proteins= Costco for just about everything. Han Kook on Kingsway; Glory Meats in Surrey

the occasional Asian food items: H-Mart, T&T, Henlong (Surrey)

I've totally shifted my grocery buying this past year and is now as follows

Superstore / Walmart - Anything other than actual food like toothpaste, toilet paper etc

Price Smart - Ribeye + veggies

Chong Lee / SuperMarket 2000 - Meats such as wings, beef, and chinese veggies

T&T - Only for non raw food because their meat and veggies suck and are more expensive vs the smaller chinese supermarkets. Usually just end up buying drinks, noodles, chips here.

If I didn't live so close to T&T I would actually completely phase it out but oh wells.
