VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A driver is lucky to be alive after a horrific early morning crash in Vancouver.

It happened on Cambie Street near McGuigan Avenue around 4 a.m.

Vancouver Police say a high-end Audi was speeding south on Cambie, when it passed through West 33rd Road, entering a curve. The driver lost control, hitting a pole on the west side of the street, splitting the car in half.

"The vehicle he [the driver] was travelling in went diagonally through a pole from the front passenger side to the rear driver side," explains VPD Cst. Jeff Shell. "Within about an inch or two inches, he would have been hit by the pole and probably would have killed himself. If anybody else had been in the vehicle, they would have been dead."

The driver managed to escape as the car caught fire. When police arrived on the scene, they found the man sitting nearby. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in this crash.

First of all, it looks more like a BC Hydro pole than a light pole. Second, in order to protect occupants, safety engineers understand that there are 3 collisions that occur in every impact. If you can describe the 3 collisions, you'll understand why the car behaved the way it did.

I only ask because on friday on the sea to sky there was a young asian man driving this exact car like a total asshat. swerving though traffic, speeding on straits just to go the speed limit through corners, then in squamish tried to pass stopped traffic in the merge off lane and locked it up (blocking any merge off traffic) so he could get back in.

some of the worst driving i've ever seen in my life, out of this exact car/colour/rims.
