Mechanical Keyboard Recommendations

Hey guys, I just want some help with choosing a mechanical keyboard.
Budget: $100-150 all in
Looking for something with Cherry MX Reds/Browns/Maybe Blacks
It'll have to be pretty small, a normal sized keyboard should work but I think the Corsair K90 may be a little on the big side for me. It's still a consideration though.
I'm working with an Everglide DKTboard right now, it's alright but the keypresses don't feel too smooth and the keys are pretty heavy. How are MX Blacks compared to the stiffer rubber domes?
I had WASD and liked it very much until I moved into a smaller place and wife can't stand the noise. :fuckthatshit:
Someone at work has a DAS (not sure about the model) and it felt very comfortable when I typed on it. The feedback was just right.

CM Storm QuickFire Pro - Cooler Master (http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=3080&product_name=CM)
used one before, highly recommended.
^^ I got the Metadot DAS keyboard. Solid Keyboard.
Also have the Razer Blackwidow. Heavier keys than the DAS but i like it a bit more than the DAS
I'm using the blackwidow right now. Its a bit noisy, but I soon got to love the sound it makes :p.
However if you're looking for black switches, the Steelseries 6Gv2 is pretty good.

Ah, thanks guys. I ended up getting one of these: Max Keyboard Nighthawk X8 Blue Backlit Mechanical Keyboard (http://www.maxkeyboard.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=1)
I pretty much got free shipping on it, and it has full backlighting so hope it works out.

I'm also looking for a mechanical keyboard and I've narrowed down and there are 3 that I'm looking at:
CoolerMaster Quickfire Pro (already mentioned)
Steelseries 6v2
Steelseries 7
From past Steelseries products that I've used, it seems like their products are of high quality. I've read a few reviews on each of these and the lack of a numpad on the QuickfirePro is slightly a turn-off. I'm still quite unsure on which of these I should get - could I have some opinions please?

^^ I think the coolermaster comes in all 4 switches...
So that a plus..
I had the steelseries the builds is very durable..
But then, I didnt like the black switches cause they were too stiff..
So I went for the reds instead.
Depend on what switches you want!!
*Edit*
Rosewill Cherry Red is on sale for $80 at newegg if anyone interested...

Just a quick curious question for those who are looking into getting a mechanical keyboard.
1) What is your usage for the keyboards?
2) Are you just sick of the normal membrane because they don't feel as solid?

1: Typing with some gaming; I'm in university so when it comes down to lab reports or research and papers I'd like something easy to type with.
2: Not sick of them but with the ones I have right now I can't type fast with them, it takes a bit of effort. One has a long keystroke, and the other one has stiff keys (gaming keyboard). Best one in my possession right now imo is the one on my XPS 1530 laptop.

The one at NCIX uses MX browns, and if you want the non-tactile MX reds then there's the Corsair K60 too.

Once you go mechanical, you won't want to go back... trust me. I'm using a mechanical at home, and when I use the school lab computers, they feel so dull. :p Also, the feel is so different haha.

This.
For those of you who are in here wondering about what switches to get, you really have to go in store (or a friends) and try them out. It's all personal preference/typing style.
For me personally- I tried blacks first. They were sort of stiff, but I could roll off keys easily as I didn't have to bottom out to get back up (I'm a lazy typer). I went to try blues, and they're easier to depress than blacks imo, but boy are they loud. That said, I LOVE the feedback (tactile mostly), since you know for sure when you hit a key. People say blues are a lot like the IBM M keyboards, but to me the IBMs were better (the blues were softer, if that makes sense). Reds are just softer blacks, so I was bottoming out all the time which I didn't like.
I haven't tried browns, but according to my logic above, they should be my favorite. That said, I'll probably pick one up for work in the future, as my Ergo4000 is driving me nuts.
My usage? maybe 20% gaming, and the rest is short typing bursts (IMs, surfing). I'd imagine if you game A LOT, I'd go with Blacks/Reds.

Best keyboard is Cherry Red's (Steelseries 6GV2, Das Keyboard ULTIMATE, Corsair K90)
I personally use the Steelseries 6Gv2, its basic and I don't ever use any functions, so I don't bother with something as flashy as the K90.

Looking into getting a mechanical keyboard for the first time, how much louder are they in general compared to a regular keyboard?

^^^ i cant imagine them being louder than typewriters (if you've never experienced a real typewriter then fuck you :P)
and most these mechanical keyboards offer sound dampening gaskets for an extra price it would seem
Looking into getting a mechanical keyboard for the first time, how much louder are they in general compared to a regular keyboard?
Unless you get blue switches, most of them aren't that much louder. It's also personal preference.. at first when i first got my mechanical keyboard (blue switches) i HATED the noise. But now, I wouldn't use anything other than it :)
LuHua
05-01-2012, 09:43 PM
I'd probably compare blues to pen clicking, the others are pretty quiet if you can avoid bottoming out, you can also put in dampening rings/rubber washers to ease off the noise. Only the first 2 mm of travel is needed anyways.
Well, quieter than a pen actually...but I didn't like the blackwidow too much when I tried it because of it.

If you're a lazy typer like me, blacks can be REALLY quiet. Since the actuation point is about midway (you don't have to bottom out), you can really roll off keys for fast typing. The downside is that you don't have feedback, so you will probably have tons of errors.
Pen-clicking is a good comparison to blues. Browns (from what I've seen on youtube) are quite a bit quieter, but still have that nice click. I'm waiting for more options locally, as buying on Amazon (say, for a Filco) is actually more expensive than buying here.
On a side note- How are people saying "switch x is better"? It's really personal preference..:suspicious:

I've had a 7G for 3 years or so now. Love it. The oversized wristrest is ridiculously comfortable (although you'll need a large desk). Quality as you mentioned is absolutely top notch. I bought it primarily for gaming although I love it all around. It did take a few days to get used to the single backspace from years of using double backspaced keyboards. I don't notice it at all anymore. I do love being able to plug my mouse (Steelseries Ikari - also love it) into the keyboard as it's one less cable I have to run from the tower.

There are these "O rings" mod where you put small rubber o rings inside the keycap...
It just soften the noise when the keycap bottoms out.. which you will be doing with black/reds....
so how does the feeling differ between a blk/red + o-ring and a brown?

browns have a defined "click" that you can feel. black/reds do not.
I think the o-rings are meant to dampen any sound coming from bottoming out black/red switched keyboards. Feel-wise, the browns would give you more feedback. Sound wise I'm not sure, as I've never used the O-rings.
bobola

^ that,
Is just bascially under the keycap... so you can use it with any switch..
Personally I dont like it cause it gives a mushy feeling when you press it hard..
It does soften most of the sound.!
The o ring also comes in different stiffness.. and I only used the softest one.. dont know about the others..!
But then if you master using brown/blue key, you wont be bottoming out anyways
Here pics of what it looks like :
Black key no o ring.. Red key with o ring

Well, it came in. Very nice build quality, feels study and weighs in at around 3 lb or so. MX browns, semi-custom backlighting, built in usb hub and mic/headphone jacks, full NKRO over USB. What more can I ask for? haha
Durability and reliability remains to be seen, but as bigbaddie said I don't think I'll ever want to go back. Typing with this is a pleasure and it's not all that loud. Will have to get used to the keyboard dimensions though, my old one was pretty compact.
Sorry for this shit picture quality, couldn't find my dslr.

I ordered on their site last Sat, it's by Max Keyboard, Nighthawk X8. They had a 20% off event which I think is on for a few more days. It was 144.99 plus 10 for a few custom lit keys, minus the discount, and around 34 shipping to Vancouver.

Cherry MX Rubber O-Ring Switch Dampeners (125pcs) - Keyboard Accessories - Products (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keyboard-accessories-2/cherry-mx-rubber-switch-dampeners.html)
You can get them there, but they won't help too much with the blackwidow. They'll muffle the noise from bottoming out but the Blue switches are clicky/loud by nature of the switch. If you think you'll have an issue with the noise the blackwidow stealth sold on the razer site, or a different board with browns/reds/blacks would be a better bet.

Just thought I bump the thread with some relevant information:
For those of you looking for a cherry brown keyboard, NCIX is selling the CoolerMaster Storm Quickfire PRO keyboard for $90. (note this is not the tenkeyless one. this is the full keyboard)
As I've always wanted a brown switch keyboard (or at least, I thought I did after using black, red, and blue), I bit given that the next cheapest brown I found was the Rosewill on newegg.ca for 110+shipping.
As for the switches- it's definitely a typer's switch. Wonderful feedback, not too loud, however it takes a bit of an adjustment to type on it, especially coming from a membrane-laden ergo 4000.
Between black and brown, I like them both. Blacks are definitely a gaming switch for me (hard to double tap on the browns), and I'll be using this CM keyboard at work where I work at a software company. It's a lot less noise than the blues, but almost a stiffer click. Not IBM stiff, but it's a nice firm response.
(I'm going to be totally honest- I wrote this mini-review to try/test out the mx browns) :ilied:

Steelseries 6GV2, most durable, basic, mechanical keyboard, I love it. I don't like the razor/CM/Avio/Corsair mechanical keyboards, they all have a very flimsy construction around the actual keyboard itself.

Filco or Ducky, either one will be better than Steelseries. NCIX is getting stock end of June or something and RedFlag has a group buy going so if you are looking for a mech kb you might want to join the GB.
i got the widow (regular) a few days ago and i'm loving it, i tried the red, brown, and blue switches, but i personally like the blue ones the best.

I just got a blackwidow ultimate dragon age 2 since it was on sale for $90 at NCIX. I'm upgrading from a logitech G110, and the main gripe I have with this particular iteration of the Blackwidow is the fact that the drivers don't work properly for it. It doesn't detect my keyboard. I don't know if its my particular keyboard or every single one but I have contacted razer.
Another problem I have is the spacing of the keys. They are a bit more narrow than the other keyboards I've used in the past. Also, the F1-F12 keys are moved over to the right so on a normal keyboard, when you alt + f4, on the BW, you end up hitting F3.
Finally, Blackwidows don't come with palm rests, so if you're used to typing on a palm rest, be sure to invest in one from staples or somewhere

I'm using the BW, got it like a month ago. I'm loving this thing. I agree it does take a while to get use to if you are coming from a normal keyboard. But after i pass that "lets get to know more about each other part". I'm loving this more and more. I have no problems with the driver, got all my macro set up. I have the ultimate edition.

Metadot Das Keyboard Ultimate Model S Mechanical Keyboard - Metadot - DASK3ULTMS1 (8 55800 00117 3) (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54108)
All of the reviews that I have read about it also say its one of the best on the market. It is very solid, clean looking and best of all the sound that the key's make is like music to my ears.
When I was looking for a gaming/typing keyboard I wanted something that didnt have all the bells and whistels of a typical gaming keyboard... I.E. back lighting, additional buttons, LCD screens etc. I wanted something simple that looked great on my desk but also performed at a high level.
So far I have found this to be the case with the Das Keyboard... Highly recommend it.

Gotta watch out that if you aren't getting the ultimate version which has the engraved lettering for the backlighting, the paint of letters of the normal version would come off after extensive use.

but hard to imagine how it could be better since I have no problems typing with my current one.
I need to test one out some day.

Once you go mechanical, you won't want to go back... trust me. I'm using a mechanical at home, and when I use the school lab computers, they feel so dull. :p Also, the feel is so different haha.
I must be the most non-picky typer out there.
Last week, someone else at the office requested one of these, so they ended up ordering an extra one.
http://www.daskeyboard.com/images/products/mechanical_keyboard.jpg
I decided to take the extra one to try it out.
It's nice, but I don't find that there's anything particularly special about it.
I don't find that I type any better on this than other keyboards, and I would have no problem going back to a regular keyboard.

I own a Blackwidow (regular version) my self, and considering the price I got it for ($50) its pretty good. However, at $100+ I would probably look at Filco, or DAS, etc other keyboards that are better.

Best keyboard is Cherry Red's (Steelseries 6GV2, Das Keyboard ULTIMATE, Corsair K90)
I personally use the Steelseries 6Gv2, its basic and I don't ever use any functions, so I don't bother with something as flashy as the K90.

^ Bangood has them, but they're definitely not cheap. Its best if you order and ship it down to PR or some place similar. Even with exchange rate, its cheaper to do that (most of the time)

I'll probably just order the poker 3 from amazon if there's no where to get one here. End's up being only around $120-30

just picked up a corsair k70 rgb. awesome is all i can say.
I picked up a Corsair K70 (non-RGB Cherry MX Reds) because I felt the novelty of the RGB lights will wear off on me eventually and I didn't think the premium was worth it.

So far so good. I love the minimalist approach, although the position of the delete/backspace button is a bit annoying at first. Also the removal of arrow keys is a bit pita as well, but I'm amazed how fast my hands adapted to the FN keys to use everything.
The Topre switch is simply incredible. I thought I'd stick with Cherry Blacks for the rest of my life... and boy was I wrong. The actuation feels more natural as in the point of actuation happens just slightly above the bottom rather than basically at the "click" on Cherry black. The feedback is just... different, in a good way. As there is less of a click, it provides less shock bouncing back and I feel it being easier on my fingers typing for an extended period.
Also, the color matches great with my LG 5K monitor. The crappy pic is showing more grey-ish, but IRL, it's very black.

I got a filco majestouch mx red ninja few months back from NCIX. ($140)
Loveeeee the touch of the keyboard
But I hate the wire and I miss some of the multifunction control on the logitech mx5500 I replaced (mainly volume control)
I just notice the same filco keyboard comes with wireless function..kinda regret not getting that. (Tho I am not sure if I wanted to spend $240 on a keyboard ... plus NCIX said it has to be order from Japan and will take a while)
I like the mx red switch so much I wanted to replace my work keyboard too, but there is almost nothing in mx red with wireless...except for the filco which is not in stock and $240....
