: Falling asleep behind the wheel

Was driving today and closed my eyes for about 2 seconds. What a scary experience. You shouldn't drink and drive. You also shouldn't fall asleep and drive. I don't know how people who sleep for a few hours a day can stand driving on the highway.

One time I had like 30 minutes of sleep in the past 48 hours and my mom asked me if I could drive the family to Seattle.

Slammed a shit load of energy drinks and coffee and the ride to Seattle was fine.
Going home my mom kept insisting to let her drive that I looked tired as fuck.

about 2 minutes later I dozed off and almost killed the entire family going 70mph lol.
Luckily the noise makers on the highway saved my ass when I started slipping.

Windows and sunroof wide open on a cold night while blasting trance keeps me alert enough for the drive home after late nights at work

Helps when you have people to talk to, when you are :alone: it gets boring and quiet...
Or just fuck around, do some 3rd gear pulls on the highway, Driving itself can keep you up (just don't go overboard)

Last 2 times coming back from states I felt like zzz. Thank god for the noise makers.

Driving when tired is like torture.

I've actually pulled over and slept for a few hours when I was only about 45 minutes outside of my house. If you're tired, don't risk other peoples lives and just do the right thing.

sometimes when im driving, ill have no recollection of how i got to my destination... not sure if sleeping while driving or autopilot mode or they're both the same. never actually dosed off while driving though, but ive been behind people who have. barricades and median dividers definitely save lives

I've fallen asleep riding my bike before, during a 24 hour relay race

Riding a trail 1 second, next thing I know, I am laying in a bush

I've almost rear ended someone on Marine as well.
Opened up all windows, dug out hard styles from my LG days and kept on jumping around
Some dude passing by gave me a "what a fucking retard" look hahaha

I've only had this problem when driving auto transmission.
After I got my 6 speed I've been wide awake.

Grab a can of pop and turn on AC even though you're cold.

So do you guys pull over to the side on the highway to sleep? Do you turn your 4 way on? Me and my brother did that when driving from Cali to Texas and was told by the cops to go on our way.

Rest Areas. Apparently, you can rest there!

...and you don't realize it 'til you're taking your exit or on the nearest main street to your house - thinking "wtf... I don't even..."

I've fallen asleep at the wheel on hwy1 in Surrey. Hit the center barrier at the starting point/lowest block. Destroyed my wheel and tire, that's it. I'm lucky to be alive. Sometimes, it just hits you without much warning. I didn't have any memorable signs I was tired/getting tired until it was too late. Be cautious out there, and pay attention to your body.

Yeah when I was driving back from the states, I was literally nodding off. My gf was asleep.... and I cranked up the music and AC :lawl:

I fell asleep while driving last summer, the sun was so hot and had no tinted front windows. Traffic was bad on 49th to Metro, each red traffic light I got at, I fell asleep and woke up right away. Next thing, I fell asleep while driving with the slow traffic. And opened my eyes to coming real close to the rear of the car infront of me. I tried to dodge the car by switching lanes fast but a car was driving fast down the lane and smashed into my passenger side.

DONT SLEEP AND DRIVE! so dangerous, pull over and take a nap!!

If you drive a manual, windows down and practice rev-matching and/or heel-toe occasionally during your drive...that will definitely keep you awake. You could always drop to 2nd/3rd, pull to redline and slow down again.

I've tried driving to the states right after i get off work and those often I have to stop frequently at rest areas because i keep falling asleep. Now I go home and sleep for a couple hours before i head out.

I went down to the states for black friday last year with a few friends, left on thursday afternoon, and shopped through out the whole night and ended up leaving to come back for vancouver the next afternoon, realized I was too tired and with the whole car load of people already asleep, I decided to pull over and we ended up all passing out for 4 hours outside of a convinence store at some gas station.

dont try pinching or slapping your face... lol doesnt work....

having people to talk to is best, not the ones that always falls asleep while you drive...

having 1 other person who can drive and taking turns driving is the best way for long drives...

AC, open windows and music can help a lot. I used to almost fall asleep sometimes while driving back home from my GF's house because the road was so familiar, it was dark and also because I was driving an auto lol. One time I was driving somewhat half asleep and next thing I know I was in my garage. I wasn't asleep while driving but I was so out of it I couldn't even remember the details of the 20 minute drive back home. After that if I was feeling sleepy I'd just pull over and take a quick 10-15 minute nap before driving, it helps a lot.
After driving a manual for a while, I find that it's a lot easier to stay awake driving manual rather than driving an auto.

Slowly picking away at food helps me a bit. Had a couple McDonalds burgers and some McNuggets, and I had my brother hand me something to eat every 30-40 miles or so. It might be excessive for longer trips, but it's effective if you're going somewhere in Washington or Oregon.

I do day trips to seattle a few times a year, whenever I feel sleepy on the way back, I start singing. Border guard noticed my voice was raspy one time, thought I was sick, and just waved me through without any taxes.

I totaled my car a few years ago falling asleep while on hwy 91. Thank god no one was on the road. Best 2 things I learned afterwards that always works is to pick away at food (chips or drive though combo) or chain smoke. All else fails, take a 30 min power nap before continuing.

... Not sure I want to drive with this many people admitting to sleeping or "losing consciousness" :heckno:

I chew gum or a pen cap if starting to feel tired.. Techno is always on anyway. :fuckyea:

just buy a 5-hour energy drink from a convenience store..... cost of that is nothing compared to a car crash or even death

swig half a bottle if its not a road trip

whatever, in the real world no one is going to take a nap in the car especially if the destination is minutes away. so providing safe alternatives was all i was giving.

I go from Oak & Marine in Vancouver to Gilbert & Francis in Richmond on a regular basis during rush hour after work. What is that - a 15 minute drive? Guess what - you might find me taking a nap on one of the side streets in the Marpole area!

I pull over and nap, got a cop that stopped behind me to make sure I was alright. Its not illegal, its encouraged in the learner's book. (just remember to pull off to the side safely)

If I'm super sleepy, I drive with my index finger on my lips, about 1cm to the left..

good for you? why do i feel like having to defend myself against a SUGGESTION? it was a far better suggestion than driving stick doing heel-toe, up the AC, singing, splash water on face? i would not be in that situation in the first place.

sorry not directed entirely at you gumby
