I have to say I'm pro multiculturalism no questions asked but I do agree being white and growing up in Surrey other cultures do gram their beliefs down your throat. They don't respect the North American culture(race doesnt matter in this case) For Christmas for example with people getting offended when you say Merry Christmas to them.

Another one thats frustrates me is hands wrapped around the earth and the saying at the top Sikh's taking over the world. I personally don't believe in religion but I still respect it and seeing saying's like that on vehicles(I do all the time in Surrey) I feel it's selfish in a way because we should work together as a society and not think you are taking over....

English, Scottish, French, German are cultures and there are many positive ways to express and celebrate that culture in our nation today.

Whiteness however has a historical context of oppression, segregation, discrimination and all that junk.

I agree with everything you say except about the comments about what happened in the past. Just because people were racist fucks back in the day still doesn't make it right. I haven't seen one yet. In fact, I had to read your post twice just to figure out that you were talking about an actual decal you saw and not just a generalization of religious decals on people's cars.

There are people who take things to the extreme in every religion. I have no doubt that you may have seen that decal on a vehicle in Surrey; after all, why would you lie about it...but at the same time we've seen vehicles driving around calling people who do not accept Jesus sinners and saying that they're going to hell. I see something like that and I laugh at people's ignorance and move on. You should do the same when and if you see a decal saying "Sikh's taking over the world." Again, I highly doubt that you will see more than 1-2 vehicles in your life time with that decal on it. Let me know if I'm wrong.

It's funny how in all religions/cultures/groups one "bad apple" tends to represent the whole and creates a misconception leading to a bullshit debate that should not have existed in the first place. I'm chinese and grew up in Richmond in the 80s. I embrace multi culturalism, and hate how few people hang out with other ethnicities -- I honestly think this results from the open door policy.
I lived in the UK for 5 years, and this was the focus of HUGE debate in politics and the media -- many felt that multi-culturalism had failed miserably due to ethnic ghettos forming where people of one race didn't bother learning english and mixing with other ethnicities.
And I see the same happening in Vancouver -- the brown people hang out with themselves, the chinese hang out with themselves, and rarely do you see a group hang out that is of different ethnicities, and when you DO see it, you think "WOW they must be really cool people" when in fact it should be the NORM.

The one greatest Canadian memory I have to this day is of a huge NYE fight outside the Pan Pacific hotel about 10 years ago. A group of 20 people in a brawl, with brown/chinese/whites mixed up. A friend and I walked closer to see what sides were fighting, and we realized it was a group of white/yellow/brown fighting another group of white/yellow/brown.

Tell that to my Oma which had the Nazi's take her twin sister to Siberia to the death or to my 88yr old uncle(his age now) that boxed to feed my Oma and Opa and 8 brothers and sisters for a loaf of bread to help them survive in eastern Europe during WW2.

Don't matter what race we are most family's have stories they won't tell because it's too hard on them especially their age. My dad is the only one in his family that was born in Canada and it really frustrates me when it sounds like people think their family was more hard done by because they are not white. Trust me I was shocked as well when I saw that decal on more then one vehicle because I know that Sikhism is about respecting other cultures as well which made me more surprised. Next time I see it I will take a picture I'm not sure how much you venture into Surrey but I've seen it a number of times in the Newton/Delta area.

Actually, I was surprised to hear a semi-legit argument against multi-culturism a few days back. I was expecting a semi-racist remark, but instead that argument is that by grouping different cultures the immigrants trying to get away from their own culture just end up right back in it. That may or may not make complete sense, but it does make you think. There are definitely neighborhoods where you expect to see groupings of certain backgrounds; it may be part to do with real estate and rental costs, but I guess it's natural to feel a little more comfortable when you see people that look like you around (when you are a complete stranger to the area). I think the argument then turned to culture's that somewhat harbour spousal abuse... but I think we missed the key point between ditching a person vs ditching a culture.
