The PCworld article is terrible, this one is much better, it goes into more detail and has more pictures.

Wonder how many people walked past him in those 12 days.

I'm surprised this story just came out now since it was back in '93 but this should become a movie for sure!
Nearest town tens of km, that doesn't sound far at all. Especially with food and water rations.

Crazy too since it took him 12 days to do it :suspicious:

it's a FRENCH car. that's just what happens whether you want it to or not. :p
Wonder where he sits and how he steers
if you translated the french in the picture, it'd say (from left to right):
the saddle was built from one end of the rear bumper cover with felt trim panel, assembled by the adhesive orange beautifully.
the drum on the right is blocked so that the differential distributes the power on the left.
the front steering wheel will be the only one with a pot of suspension.
seems like a waste of time to build this unless he didn't know how far away from the next town he was. the article says "tens of kilometres" away (which is a weird turn of phrase - why not just say the actual distance?). so let's assume that if it was over a hundred, they would have said that. so at most, the next town was 90+kilometres away. at an average walking pace of 4km/h, that 90kms would have taken him 22.5hrs to walk. he could have made a wheelbarrow instead to carry his supplies and could have walked out in a few days instead of spending 12 days in the desert making this hodgepodge machine.
i wonder if he planned on continuing his solo trip of north africa on that contraption. that would make more sense as to why he bothered to make it in the first place.
