This is so idiotic, the other Provinces that have family day and the US holiday in Feb falls on the 3rd Monday of Feb, why not just make it match up, such a disaster for businesses in banking, finances, etc... or any other business with US, Ontario offices/branches

Woo hoo! Another long weekend starting in 2013. The second Monday in February is a decent choice for Family Day.

Superbowl is usually held on the first Sunday in February. -get to celebrate championship football in the first week of that month followed by a long weekend in the second week. :fullofwin:

Agreed. I was listening on the radio and wondering "why the fuck not on the same day with everyone else?". These guys just don't get it.

Still happy we finally got it though.

I was so hoping it was going to be the 3rd week of Feb since I go camping that weekend every year and I would of saved a vacation day. I'm just happy we have one it will make the begining of the year go that easier.

I don't care when as long as there is one... Would you be happy if they took it away instead?

Damned If you do and damned if you dont...

How would we be dammed if we put the holiday on the 3rd week?
And if we didn't? We were going to do it anyway?

As others have mentioned, I don't get the rationale for why it is the week before the other provinces' long weekend and the US holiday.

Wasn't this voted on by citizens??

A confirmed date for the long-promised holiday comes after weeks of gathering feedback from citizens, who were able to state their preference for the second or third week of February using a web poll.

The tool collected 31,146 votes between May 8 and 22, with 18,202 votes for the second week, and 9.436 for the third week. The remaining votes did not state a preference for either week.

Can't really complain if that's the case....

The rationale is that locals won't have to compete with tourists for holiday attractions (IE: Ski hills)

I don't know anyone else in Canada or the U.S. that I would want to schedule a vacation with anyways, so it doesn't bother me.

Family Day is in lieu of one of the floating / personal days you may have. Now its mandatory to take it in Feb... I'd prefer to choose another day during the summer myself.

my point was that if you don't put a holiday in feb, people are going to complain...now they put one in and now the complaint, is why did it not be in this day in feb...i dont know the rationale but there probably was a reason...

be happy its there...

edit...since i work with customers based in the US, i love that this is on the 2nd week...its like having a freebie day...twice...

Yep, same as my job. Since the company I work for is Canada wide, every employee must work the same amount of days. So since BC never had a Family Day, we would get a floater day to be taking sometime between Dec 15 - Dec 31st. Now I don't get the choose which day to take it.
