Apparently this will not to effect for 1 year so they can draft legislation, but the person who brought this to court will be permitted to seek physician assisted suicide within that year if she follows the guidelines.

I think I am okay with this decision as I think it is a personal choice....others may disagree.

How would this affect those with depression?

I'm sure many logical people with no visible mental illness could prove they are of sound mind. Yes, I respect that it's a choice, but how do you put checks in place so that people can be get help as well?

From my understanding, it is based on physical disability...as in...if you can not do it yourself (paralyzed, etc). Also, this is specifically pertaining to those who have non-curable diseases like ALS, etc.

Mental health CAN be improved and it not a death sentence.

It's not going to be for depressed people or people having a bad day. It's for those that are so phycially damaged that they feel that their quality of life has declined so much that living is more painful than going in a controlled way. Imagine not knowing when you're going to choke on ur own fluids and drown and you don't have the ability to do anything.

There is a really good doc. on youtube about this called "Death Tourist". It's about a guy that has to go to Europe somewhere where this is legal.

AFAIK, suicide is not illegal in BC. This law only applies to those who are unable to commit suicide themselves.

Yes, I'm aware that mental illness isn't a death sentence. However, when in the midst of it, it does feel that way.
Legally, a physician will now assist somebody with a terminal illness, but not somebody who isn't?

Just wondering what kind of legal precedent this sets if I were to talk into a doctor's office and ask for the same procedure? What happens then?

If you are physically capable of committing suicide on your own, the doc will refuse you.as gars said, this only applies to people of sound mind who cannot physically perform any acts which would result in suicide.
