The "list your latest fashion purchases" thread is becoming filled with questions and discussion, so a dedicated thread for those posts seems necessary. Denim specific questions and discussion belongs here (http://www.revscene.net/forums/520872-denim-thread.html).

First subject of discussion:
Does anyone have any recommendation for places to thrift in Vancouver?

I don't really thrift, so to speak..

I never cheap out on denim and jackets/hoodies.. But sometimes if I'm itching for something inexpensive, new, and temporary, I usually pick up a few random things at H&M/Urban Behavior/AE for dirt cheap. Namely summer clothing. The "cheaper" t-shirts from these places are very thin, light, and pretty much built to last no longer than a couple months. At $6 a shirt, it's a fair price to last you through the season. You don't want to be wearing heavyweight cotton during the summer anyway. (Though it's not like we're having much of a summer here ..)

does the American Apparell store at metro ever have any sales? Are their basic hoodies included in their sales? How much discounts for their sales usually? 40%?

AA has warehouse sales sometimes, theres great selection but I didn't like anything so I didn't know the prices compared to regular sales. The AA Facebook page has frequent "flash sales" as well.

Is it Vancouver Consignment Clothing & Accessories | Front & Company (http://www.frontandcompany.ca/?) I pass it almost everyday just that I've never taken the time to go in and try to find things lol.

I go to value village from time to time when they had their 50% off everything, found a few good deals but haven't gone recently.

I don't think I'd ever buy heavily worn raw denim lol

gGuys, What is your your experience with pilling sweaters and tees with higher up brands like Wings and Horns and Reigning Champ?
Really tired of my sweaters and tees from AA pilling up so quickly..

PJ
06-25-2012, 10:28 AM
Do you wash your hoodies very often?
My t-shirts never really pill, and I have a good amount of tees and hoodies from AA.
Do you put them in the dryer?
Chemicals (detergent and softener), # of regular washes, and wear will always cause all clothing to pill.

I don't wash my hoodies very often, maybe once or twice a month, depending on how often I wear them..

Unless your clothes get heavily soiled.. try doing your laundry under the "light' option, with less detergent. I find even the "normal" setting is overkill.

You could always try depilling with a razorblade..

The higher end brands probably won't pill as fast, but ultimately they still will.

Definitely try depilling with a razor blade. It took me almost an hour to do my Sisley cardigan, but it was so worth it. The cardigan looks brand new after I gave it a good shave lol. Just use any disposable shaving razor (I prefer single bladed in case I rip the fabric by accident) and lightly shave off the pilling spots.

Interesting.. I'll definitely give this a try! Worst comes to worst I'll just buy more to throw into the rotation so that the overall pilling is lessened on a single garment.
Thanks again guys.

A helpful article on cleaning thrift store clothing.

Given thought, the idea of second hand clothing can be a bit unpleasant. After a very thorough cleaning, the clothing smells fresh and totally clean again though. I have anything purchased second hand dry cleaned, even t-shirts. I wouldn't buy second hand shoes, too hard to get clean.

How To Clean Thrift Store Clothing
By: Ana Jackson
Break Studios Contributing Writer
Bargain hunters often wonder how to clean thrift store clothing. Even when garments look clean, they often have a musty, not so fresh smell. The good news is that you can enjoy great thrift store bargains while you wear fresh smelling clothes.

Dry clean your thrift store clothing. Look at the care instructions tag. If the piece of clothing is dry clean only, send it to the dry cleaners. Dry cleaning destroys most germs since dry cleaning involves the use of chemicals and heat.

Wash the garment. If the garment is washable, wash it in hot water. Use the hottest setting possible, but only if the manufacturer’s tag indicates that you can use hot water. Add about one eighth cup of Pine Sol to the wash cycle. Once the wash and rinse cycles end, run it through another rinse cycle. This time, add one tablespoon of baking soda to the rinse water. The baking soda will get rid of the Pine Sol scent. You may use any disinfectant or antiseptic solution in place of Pine Sol. However, test the antiseptic solution on a small area of the garment to ensure that it does not cause any fading. Dry your thrift store clothing in the hottest possible setting.

Disinfect accessories. Disinfect items such as shoes, leather caps and other small items with Alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Test the antiseptic product on an inconspicuous area on the item to ensure that it’s safe to use alcohol or any other disinfecting solution. Simply dip a piece of cloth or cotton swab in the disinfecting solution and wipe the item with it.
Cleaning and disinfecting thrift store clothing is simple and does not require much of your time, so keep looking for second-hand bargains. Enjoy your thrift store clothing while you enjoy the savings.

What do you guys think of athletic shoes with casual wear?
As in when you see people in nice jeans, nice shirt, nice jacket, and all of a sudden, they have a pair of Nike trainers on.

if you're wearing casual clothing, i think you can pull of some types of athletic shoes.
for example some casual new balance shoes can be pulled off with a button down and casual chinos.
if you're talking about cross trainers (running shoes), then no, its a bad look.

Runners just don't work. I saw a guy wearing a dress shirt + trousers yesterday. The shoes he was wearing: Vibram Five Fingers.

Certain athletic shoes can work, however. Like the New Balance 574:

To me, it's like anything else in fashion...

A single item completely juxtaposed to the overall style will look misplaced and odd. If you can work an athletic look into another area of the outfit then it has potential. If you were a fan of the show, recall that Dr. House always wore athletic shoes, denim, a partially unbuttoned button down, and sport coat, which to my eye worked well because of the exposed t-shirt.

I'm also guilty of what most consider a serious faux pas, I used to routinely pair athletic shoes with a suit, but I made it work, and not just to my eye, I used to always get random compliments on it from well-dressed people. In general though, athletic shoes with a suit looks like complete rubbish.

So, overall, I think it's one of those things that's hard to pull off, but possible.

Dr. House was never wearing trainers, it was always Nike SB's. lol

I have a question, it's directed at those, who are perhaps, more fashionable than myself.

Cuffed pant legs, creating a break between the shoe and pant leg, exposing the sock. I don't get it. Is it supposed to be fashionable somehow; by showing off a lovely pair of patterned socks, or breaking with the traditional ideals of proper tailoring, perhaps?

If someone could explain, I would be appreciative, because when I see this:

Personally, I still prefer a more classic look, but at least a neatly executed roll/cuff, like in the photo you posted, doesn't give the impression of a sloppy excuse to avoid tailoring.

Nothing against anyone who wears that look; to each their own.

Wingtips and open lacing are inherently casual, but black is a formal colour, so this boot falls in a weird space where it's not formal enough for a suit, but too dressed up for even a business casual outfit.

I think you would get more mileage out of a similar boot in brown.

More mileage could not be had from a similar boot in brown.

Brown footwear is not appropriate for even semi-casual attire in the evening, the venerable 6:00 pm rule.

The only exception to that rule may be Summer evenings, where they probably could be worn till 9:00 pm.

I agree with Jah on possible combinations; dark blue jeans with essentially anything semi-formal on top.

Brown shoes imo are hard to pull off that's why I only own one pair of brown shoes.

Why do you find that?

I actually find brown shoes more versatile than black shoes. Currently the brown shoes I have are Ferragamo's - wingtip oxfords, 2x pairs of loafers (one narrow, one boat-loafer style but more formal), and brown suede loafers (narrow). They have yet to fail me since they always complemented whatever I wear. If I go to work, they obviously work there. Even on casual (slim jeans black/blue, chinos, dress shirt/golf shirt, sweater, cardigan, vest, all kinds of jackets, etc.). Simply put, I can't find any flaw in brown shoes.

I'm assuming you wear slim pants, so I don't quite understand how they don't work for you.

Traditionally, brown shoes are not considered appropriate to wear with a black or navy suit. In a workplace that prefers more conservative dress, myself and others would still follow that rule.

Those brown footwear rules really don't exist.

Of course they exist, whether or not you choose to follow them is the question.

Well the thing is I haven't been wearing dark jeans or black pants lately so I can't really wear brown shoes with say grey chinos. That been said tho, I have worn a grey suit with brown shoes and it looked pretty good but still not a fan of brown shoes to own more than one pair.

Farfetched

Of course they exist, whether or not you choose to follow them is the question.

There are a lot of traditions that have either become antiquated or simply impractical. Traditionally, weddings and the most formal of occasions meant morning dress and top hats, but you don't see those anymore.

Even in the most conservative of workplaces, I doubt if anyone would even bat an eye if someone wore a pair nice dark brown captoe balmorals.

Even in the most conservative of workplaces, I doubt if anyone would even bat an eye if someone wore a pair nice dark brown captoe balmorals.

In a conservative workplace, the senior staff will still almost exclusively stick to tried and true colour combinations: black shoes, black suit; black shoes; navy suit. If a young new hire switches up black shoes for brown, along with other more contemporary choices, they'll attract attention to themselves for making more bold fashion choices, when they should be trying to stand out for quality of work.

I'm not saying brown shoes don't look attractive with a black or navy suit, I think they do. In my experience, they simply wouldn't serve a person working in a conservative professional environment well. I always consider who my meetings are with when considering my clothing choices, and I've been served well by that practice so far. You're welcome to differ in your opinion.

Hardly, my internet use consists of Revscene, Facebook, and a sport related forum. I've not read any rules on the internet, they're just common knowledge among my social circles. If I'm going out in the evening, I instinctually feel brown shoes look out of place, regardless of any unwritten rules.

It probably has to do a lot with who your peers are in the workplace.

I believe that as long as you look well-dressed in any sort of way that isn't ridiculous with flailing orange everywhere, then it's acceptable by professional standards. The way you dress can affect coworkers' perception, but ultimately, as you stated, your quality of work and the type of persona you portray are the majority portions of what they really care about.

Your rules are fine, but it seems like the professional world is becoming more accepting of ideas that break the traditional black everything + white shirt. Even the most sound rules can become less relevant as times change - gotta adapt.

Perfect picture, yes, that's what I'm referring too. I've seen it done with and without socks.

I'm still stuck on it looking ridiculous, and it likely will fall out of favour and return to looking ridiculous given time. To each his own though, if you like it, that's all that matters.

I like something like this as a summer look better.

style come and go, thats how fashion is. Rolled up pant leg with no sock loafers were huge 2 years ago, now it's more about rolled up pant legs/shorts with long shin socks + loafers. Corduroy is huge, also long ties with tips tucked into the pants. Are they attractive? prefers on taste. But new trends come and go and sometimes resurface every decade or two and becomes super popular and be deemed as "the look" among fashionistos/nistas. Doesn't mean the general public like/accept it.

I remember when baggy pants used to be the thing in highschool, but now it just looks rediculous. However I'm sure it'll resurface again and become the thing again in due time.

I'm looking at possibly updating my current suit a little rather then having to buy a brand new one.

The only thing I want to update is the pants mostly, or even shortening the jacket but want to know your opinions if this is even possible.

The pants from the knee's down are a bit wide, where as the seat/thighs are actually fit quite well.
Is there a way to slim down pants from around where the knee is down to the leg opening without having to slim down the whole leg?

And assuming the jackets measurements are made as is, I'm thinking it's not a great idea to shorten the jacket length?

thanks.

woob
12-28-2012, 10:41 PM
Tapering pants below the knee is definitely possible. Shortening a jacket is possible as well, but if you take too much off, the pockets will become too low (i.e. too close to the hem) and the whole shape will look unbalanced.

Ultimately, however, you should ask your tailor these questions.

Have to attend a funeral and wake next week.
Not sure on dress code as I haven't been to a funeral in a long time

For the wake, I understand the dresscode is a bit casual.
Would dark blue jeans, black dress shirt and a black v neck sweater be appropriate, or should I replace the jeans w/ a pair of dress pants?

For the funeral, I know the black suit/tie traditional outfit...not sure what color dress shirt to wear...online a lot of website is suggesting white shirt black tie....while some of my friends are saying to wear a dark purple or dark navy shirt w/ a black tie.
Also, the only black tie I own is a skinny black hugo boss tie w/ a 2 shades of black stripe pattern, its fairly subtle...but would it be better for me to go buy a plain traditional width black tie for the service?

are they supposed to be that short?

Well, the model is 6" tall so I hope they are a bit longer on me. But it's not a huge deal to me if they are as short as they look. I can plan some fits for cropped sweats.

Yes I will be suiting up for the funeral...I read online the wake is suppose to be slightly informal.
Would you reccomend dress pants, dress shirt tie and a sweater?
Or just suit up for both the wake and funeral?
Again, more worried about the respect aspect than the fashion aspect
Posted via RS Mobile

I don't feel there is a well-defined convention on funeral attire; only the very general rule, make humble and conservative choices.

I would absolutely wear a black suit to the funeral, I wouldn't consider anything less formal. The details, such as tie and shirt colour, are not terribly important. It's acceptable to choose to not wear a tie; its also acceptable to choose any dark or neutral colour shirt.

Depending on the formality of the family, I would consider dark jeans or dress pants, a dress shirt, and a sweater generally acceptable for a wake; a very traditional family would likely prefer dress pants.

I've attended two funerals recently; the funerals and services were the very sad portion and formal, but wakes felt only mildly somber and were relaxed, definitely casual overall. During the wakes, I spent a great deal of time re-connecting with people I rarely see, giving hugs, and reminiscing about better times. I wouldn't worry too much about what to wear, though. People will not be concerned with your attire, as long as its not something eye catching (and thus inappropriate).

Possibly obvious, but its likely best to pass on cologne as well.

^ not really my cup of tea in terms of the colour, but the fit seems alright (is he sagging it a bit?)

I'm looking for a pair of sweapants like these... most importantly, I want one where there is a 'long' elastic cuff at the opening. And slim. Any recommendations?

the above wasn't your cup of tea, but what you posted is? Sorry, I know fashion is all about what YOU feel good in, but those are pretty much black clown pants.

They look stupid in that pic, but drop crotch sweats are used in some sick, if forward-thinking fits. Drop crotches in general are big in Asia and celebs like One Direction have been seen wearing drop crotch pants in Europe. Only a matter of time before DC floods North America.

But yes, you're allowed to dislike the style, and I understand not everyone is going to like it, but we did go from saggy baggy pants in the 90s to a slimmer cut today, so who knows. Maybe we'll all be rocking that drop crotch by 2030.

Here's an inspiration pic ft. black sweats

I would just add that I wouldn't make a phenomenally drastic wardrobe change between the wake and the funeral, less it detract or draw negative attention upon yourself... hence why I would go for the dress pants with a shirt or sweater look, and put the jacket on for the funeral itself. But I've thankfully (knock on wood) only had to go to one of these in my life so far so my experience isn't exactly enormous.

you mean someone with an extremely large ass and droopy ball sacks, and chicken legs? Do the people who like these actually like them because they believe they look good, or because some celebrities wear them? When I first saw them being worn by Lil wayne and Bieber, I literally gave up on the generation that they were catering to.

EDIT: okay fuck I was supposed to be on copfreeze since I bought the CPs on Monday but I just ordered a pair of these sweats. If you don't mind waiting I can let you know what the quality is like. Honestly I'm not expecting much since, at the heart of it, they are just Chinese Rick Owens knockoffs, but /fa/ has decent things to say about them and for $29 shipped I don't mind experimenting.

its long enough. I'm 5'8 or so, and if i wear it at the waist, it goes all the way past my ankles. I'm assuming around 30-31" inseam in jeans equivalent (since its a bit of a baggier/drop crotch, so its not accurate if i measure). It's just long enough so that I can wear low-top sneakers without my socks showing.

I don't know much about leather jackets and this will be my first time buying one lol

If you're willing to spend a little and actually enjoy wearing a leather jacket, I would advise against buying a Danier.

Their cheap for a reason.

I've been wearing mine from Danier for about 8 months now. The leather itself is gorgeous, but the liner is deteriorating. I'll get it covered under warranty soon. But for the stylish trends that people go for, I see no need to spend 1000+ on a coat when your going to get bored of it in a year or two. If it's a classic design, and you plan to wear it for life, then sure, spend the big bucks.

I got mine for $250 from $500 and I am very happy, I always get compliments on it.

Anyone where to get something similar in length and colour/style at a cheaper price... sub 100?

Thom Browne Navy Nylon Taffeta Swin Shorts for men | SSENSE (http://www.ssense.com/men/product/thom_browne/navy_nylon_taffeta_swin_shorts/67302)

I really like that one ugh... so expensive.

Has anyone here tried SuitSupply? They've gotten quite a bit of love from GQ and SF.

What's the reason? Do you actually know the differences in the leather, other than the branding?

Not trying to sound condescending, because I really don't know the difference myself.

You put a $1500 branded jacket next to a $200 Danier one, I wouldn't know which one's which.

I've been wearing my Danier for 2-3 years now, and the build is still holding perfect. It fits well, looks good, feels good. Yes, it's starting to wear out a bit, but I paid I think $200 ish, and it's been 2-3 years. Not to mention the worn out look is kinda cool :fullofwin:

And I couldn't agree more with the pricing. Even if the designer branded ones really are that much better in quality and build (which I'm not so sure they are), I would still rather have 5+ Danier jackets over a decade, than 1 jacket I'm gonna get bored of in a couple years.

Moncler fits smaller that Cgoose
I wear a chilliwack bomber in a medium and its a very generous fit
In a moncler I am a large...medium would be very fitted...

^ I hate how every year, Harry Rosen always carries the same shiny/glossy Moncler jackets, would be better if they carried the non-shiny black/navy versions

What's the reason? Do you actually know the differences in the leather, other than the branding?

Here's a short primer

1. Start with this Saddleback Leather link (http://www.saddlebackleather.com/Leather-101#leathertypes) explaining the differences between the parts of hide used to make the leather.

Summary:
- Full Grain is the best, no contest. And a warning: many products say "genuine leather," and technically they are, but that means they are likely bonded or top grain, both of which are inferior to full grain and the latter of which is just garbage.

- Fully tanned leather is better than non-fully tanned leather.

2. Check out this Die Workwear link (http://dieworkwear.com/post/10558785607/controlling-leather-quality-at-lotuff-clegg) to see the imperfections that can mar certain hides.

Summary:
- Better jacket makers will avoid hides that have scars, tick marks, and fat wrinkles. Cheaper ones will keep these imperfections since leather dye can make them less apparent.

3. Common hide types: (quoted from reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/comments/zsaj4/leather_jackets_a_lengthy_buying_guide_v10/)):

Cowhide, Steerhide, and HorseHide - All stiff types that are designed to be heavy and durable. These will last you eons, but may not be as supple to the touch.

Calf skin similar to cowhide but slightly softer. Meant to be broken in and is still considered heavy.

Lamb Very light and soft type of leather. The feeling of this will almost feel like cloth or silk like. Many people may not even believe it's leather because of it's soft hand feel.

Goat Softer than calf, but not as soft as lamb. Will be much more porous and heavy grain. Very good versatile all around type of leather.

Buffalo and Bison more heavy leather types. Used for protection and functionality. Will last eons.

4. Also consider hide thickness, tanning method (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather#Forms), and the construction of the garment when it comes to overall quality.

Of course, retail pricing is still heavily dependent on brand. A Burberry jacket will likely have better leather than a Danier, but you can definitely bet the price difference is also a function of the brand's status.
