any reason why i can respond to ads in the Used Photo Buy/Sell? i can bump my own thread, but i get the generic "You do not have permission due to one of several reasons blah blah" for the rest.

Because your not supposed to post in other peoples threads. If you have a question use the PM function.

Ditto. Perhaps both of us being here for over 10 years affected our ability to comprehend what was wrong.
RS Staff, my feedback to you:
- How many people wanted to respond to something, got the same message and said "ahh fuck it"?
- How does this affect the ability of your users to sell their products?
- Is this generic response clear to the potential purchaser?
"Roach, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."
To me, I thought I had been banned, suspended or otherwise. I've been here for 11 years. How do you expect your newer users to know?
I understand that the purpose of this restriction is to avoid chatter, excessive bumping etc.
However, as a counterpoint, I would like to say that seeing discussion about a particular vehicle or item helps the end-user add clarity or answer questions that other potential buyers may be thinking of. What if someone lists a car without stating whether it's manual or automatic transmission? The seller could answer 10 PM's or simply answer a common question in their thread.
Furthermore, when potentially purchasing an item I have often seen another respected, long-time member vouch for a particular item. This support aids the sale and the seller's credibility. That value is lost.
As mentioned, some general feedback. I respect your guys' decision regardless.

As you mentioned Kevin, the reason we've disabled responses to Buy & Sell threads is because we want to reduce chatter, unauthorized bumps and also the people who like to shit on threads. You nor we want threads like this on RS: http://www.vancouvercivics.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=111740
The idea is that the seller is supposed to provide enough detail in their ad to answer people's questions. I have seen on many occasions where the Seller is barraged with PM's forcing them to make changes to their ad. On many other occasions, we simply close the person's thread and leave a message for them to create a more detailed ad.
The amendment to the rules was posted here: http://www.revscene.net/forums/496179-%2A%2Abuy-sell-rules%2A%2A-2011-a.html#post7711286
I do agree that vouching for a seller/quality item is lost, but the pros far out weigh the cons with this system.
Thanks for inquiring,
