Disabled man beaten to death - arrests follow post to Facebook

Quote:
Two more teens have been charged in the beating death of a 62-year-old disabled man that Chicago police said was recorded on a cell phone and posted to Facebook.

Police said a 16-year-old gang member punched Delfino Mora, father to 12 children and a grandfather to 23, last Tuesday in an alley in the 6300 block of North Artesian. Mora's devastated family told NBC Chicago that Mora was on his regular route of collecting cans that he sells for cash when the teens confronted him.

Nicholas Ayala, 17, of the 6300 block of North Talman and Anthony Malcolm, 18, of the 5500 block of North Broadway were both charged with first-degree murder and robbery.

Malik Jones, 16, the Latin Kings member accused of striking Mora, was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bail Sunday by Judge Adam Bourgeois.

Police said Jones handed his friends his cell phone to start filming then demanded money from Mora and punched him in the jaw. Ayala and Malcolm are accused of taking turns filming the video which allegedly showed Mora's head smashing into the concrete.

Mora was found unconscious and died one day later.

Police said the video was posted to Jones' Facebook page. He was arrested after police found out about the video.

"If I had them face-to-face, I would tell them I hope they regret it," said Leo Plata, Mora's grandson. "You don't do that to anybody, you don't just go around jumping people for fun."

Jones was charged as an adult and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Monday. Ayala and Malcolm are expected to appear Monday in bond court.

The attack marks the third time in the past year a Chicago attack has been filmed and the video has led to an arrest.

What's the logic in video taping your crime, and then immortalizing it on the internet? At least it makes the job for investigators easier.

They are teenaged gangmembers. In this day and age they wouldnt do this WITHOUT someone filming.

It's unfortunate that Illinois has abolished the death penalty. This would have been the perfect time to use it on these two teenage scumbags.

If you want money from an old man or anyone, I don't get the logic behind beating them up when they are already outnumbered.

I agree... I am anti-death penalty and yet once in awhile I hear stories that fill me with such anger that I can't help but think that I wouldn't feel the slightest bit of remorse should these people cease to exist. I just truly cannot imagine what kind of person could legitimately beat an old frail man to his death for the chance at a few dollars. FFS, the old guy was collecting cans to return, it's not like he's going to have a Rolex on him to fence, it just purely disgusts me.

Between this story and the little girl shot at her lemonade stand, Illinois sounds like an absolutely terrible place to live. Anecdotal I know, but where there's smoke...

I would bet my life savings they yelled "world star" at some point in that video. Disgusting.

It reinforces the point that these incidents are never really about the money but more so about the street cred, the rep.

Its the MTV generation. What's the point of being bad ass when no else knows you're bad ass.

For all I care, I think it's awesome that these meatheads ARE dumb enough to film themselves. It makes so much things easier and simpler for the rest of us.

One of the reasons why Facebook can be useful sometimes. Kids putting up their 'accomplishments' only to make investigating a thousand times easier

I love these stories.. not because someone got hurt... but because idiots are getting caught by their own stupidity with the help of technology.

Things just falls in to place and Darwinism will take care of itself

He's charged with first degree murder in the U.S. At a minimum he's in jail for 20 years. Now if this was Canada it would be a whole different story...

Parenthood failure as well.

The parents should be charged too. I've been saying this before, but there needs to be a licencing program for parenthood, there are a lot of unfit parents out there, especially in poverty stricken areas.

Youth Criminal Justice Act (a.k.a. You Can't Jail Adolescents) protects them and lends high potential for re-offending. In Canada, they get a slap on the wrist, or community service at the worst. Really, it's a dumb system since a 16 year old could probably do the same mass killing as Anders Breivik and get off completely free because of the YCJA.

why would you demand money from a person who collects cans? how much money do you think they would have

the US has stricter rules because this shit happens a lot... Up here, its not as crazy... but more and more young guys are starting to get crazy... its like a regular thing now, turn on news and your expected to hear some news about someone dead... Man back in the day ('90s) none of this crap was going on.. so peaceful... Kids were kids just playing outside or at the ARCADES (god i miss that)..
