Three years ago, British couple Michael and Margaret Snell travelled to the Vancouver area for a fishing trip and thought they'd hit the jackpot, reeling in a sturgeon that was 1.5 metres long.
But that trophy pales in comparison to the massive fish the retired couple caught in the Fraser River during a return trip this week, hauling a white sturgeon out of the water that measured nearly four metres and weighed half a tonne - believed to be one of the largest fish ever caught for sport in North America.
The couple, from Salisbury, England, set out onto the Fraser River from Chilliwack, east of Vancouver, on Monday.
Michael Snell, 65, said he saw his rod tip, but he struggled with his catch for nearly 45 minutes before he actually saw the fish surface.
It was 3.8 metres long. "We just saw a tail fin come up, then a bit later we saw a middle fin, and eventually, as it got tired, we saw the head come out as well," he said in an interview on Friday.
"We realized the sheer length of this fish - next to the boat, it's nearly as big as the boat."
The couple's guide, Dean Werk, estimated the sturgeon was at least 100 years old, weighing roughly 500 kilograms. Based on a database kept by the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society, Werk said it could be the largest fish ever caught in the continent.
They released the sturgeon back into the river, but not before snapping some photos with it.
Pretty badass, i went on a guided sturgeon fishing trip a couple summers ago. It was through Sturgeon Slayers though. The one i pulled in was 630lbs, cant remember how big. It took a little over an hour to bring in and finally jumped into the water to get a photo with it. Amazing the strength of those friggin things.
I don't think you want to eat a 100 year old fish swimming in the fraser ... LOL
One guy caught a sturgeon and ate it back home, fisheries got tipped off and tracked down the tag to the guy's garbage can

I know which incident you're referring to, he was fined $5000; a separate group caught cooking a sturgeon under the Alex Fraser was fined $22,500. Fines can go up to $100,000 for more serious offences.
Sturgeon populations around the world are endangered or already extinct because the value of the caviar makes them a prized target for poachers, and because they reproduce on average only once every ten years beginning at between 15-25 years of age, so taking even one sturgeon has a serious impact.

Some of my coworkers were talking about the incident under the Alex Fraser, apparently it was them lol. It was more than $22,500 according to them. They had something like 10 or 12 people, and each of them got a $8000 fine.

I'm rarely surprised by the sheer ignorance and self-absorbed idiocy of some people anymore, but if your coworkers were indeed bragging about poaching an endangered species.... well, I'm glad I don't have to work with them.
If these are your coworkers, they're exaggerating.
Han Ly- pleaded guilty to molesting and injuring a sturgeon, possession of a dead sturgeon, fishing without a license; fined $8000 and banned from fishing for one year. Raymond Ouyang - pleaded guilty to molesting and injuring a sturgeon, possession of a dead sturgeon; fined $7500 and banned from fishing for one year. Hung Nguyen - pleaded guilty to molesting and injuring a sturgeon; fined $3000 and banned from fishing for one year. David Boriboune- pleaded guilty to molesting and injuring a sturgeon; fined $3500 and banned from fishing for one year. Charlie Tran - pleaded guilty to fishing without a licence; fined $500 and banned from fishing for one year.
The fishing bans should have been lifetime given the seriousness of the crimes, and the fines higher as well.

No they weren't bragging about it, they told some other ppl not to do it because they didn't know at the time and got ass raped by fines. Some other people were discussing about fishing they were talking about what to do and what not to do.
I think he said the fines were something like 40k total for everyone.
It's protected and it would taste like poo anyways. They eat all the crap off the bottom.
Uh. A lot of extremely tasty fish eat crap off the bottom. They taste like mussels. Texturally it's similar to halibut, but denser and less flaky. Probably one of the tastiest fishes.
^ there are farmed sturgeon, people can stop failing him
I would still advise against eating anything from the fraser tho LOL
