Not just another $15,000 car thread.

Evening all, I'd like to start off by making one point very clear. I am NOT trying to be a fifteen thousand dollar baller. I understand i'm not going to get the upgrade i really want for this money, But i know i'll get something good (ish).
So, I'm not looking for the typical old ass beat to hell M3's for 15k, or the 90's M5 that requires a 100,000KM major service. What i am looking for is a car that will fit the following requirements:
1) This will be the daily. Reliable (ish) is preferred
2) My main wish right now is a corner carver. Handling is what i'm looking for right now. If i want straight line speed i can take one out of the family stable.
3) As much as i desperately want a RWD, It IS going to be a daily, With winter whistler runs, and 2-3 times a week up to cypress. FWD (FML) or AWD is preferred
4) Fuel economy honestly isn't that big of an issue, i already have a gas pig that requires premium.
5) N/A or F/I does not matter (FACTORY F/I that is. I don't want a aftermarket boosted Daily)
6) If i have to mod to get what i want, so be it. I like projects.
Thanks everybody.

I would say a S2000, But you said no rwd. Plus with your winter driving thats a no-go. So, I would say a Mazdaspeed 3 or a wrx.

I would have said s2000 too but he wants to do whistler and cypress runs. Not going to be able to take any gear with you in an s2k.
I'm gonna go ahead and agree with WRX sayers, since you mentioned you want something that corners well.
That also kinda puts the FWD out of the equation if that's a deal breaker, which crosses out the reliable Acuras.
There's the A4 Quattros as well, if you don't mind the more finnicky maintenance requirements.

Cheaper insurance, nicer/larger interior and trunk than a WRX.
Otherwise, I'd get a Mazdaspeed3.

Sorry guys i should of said, I currently have a 2003 Nissan Maxima. It gets worse gas mileage than our Pathfinder (well close) It's not particularly fast, it handles ok, It really isn't good at much of anything. I like the WRX idea, but can you find a good one for 15? I thought that would push 20.

Quick Craigslist search shows a lot of wrx under $15000. Shouldn't be too hard to find a good one.

Don't be too afraid of RWD in Vancouver winter. If you're properly prepared(which you should be even in an AWD vehicle), you can make it up Seymour+Cypress just fine. As I was able to in my is300.

I'd be inclined to agree i could get up Seymour and Cypress fairly easily as long as i had good snowies, Still nice to have that AWD aspect however. A note on the FWD, practical as it is, i hate FWD. If nothing else (the understeer, embarrassing fact that the rear wheels do absolutely NOTHING) The torque steer sucks. Big time.

Hmm. I like the WRX idea, except from what a cursory Craiglist glance told me, is there's no middle ground, It's either 8 grand for an 2000 with 180k, or 32k for a virtually brand new one. I like the speed3 idea, Oh how i wish it was AWD though. Would be a 20k STI. Then there IS a speed6. Hmm.

Look into the Mazdaspeed6. It's AWD, 4 doors and looks pretty good stock or modified. If memory serves me correct, prices should be around 15k

meh i would never get an xdrive bmw.. that's just me though (unless we're talking about x5s or something)
the weight distribution and handling is a lot better in the rwd ones. that's what bmw is known for anyway. also drivetrain loss + heavier car from the awd.
personally i would rather go quattro than xdrive if what i wanted was awd.

If I decide to go FWD/AWD (Whistler/Cypress)
-B6 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro (APR Stage two)
-8PA Audi A3 2.0T (APR Stage one)
-Infiniti G35X Sedan (Stock, perhaps coupe mid-pipe)
-MKV Golf GTI (APR Stage one/two)
If I decide to go RWD, Which i DO want more
-Infiniti G35 Sedan 6MT (stock Perhaps Coupe mid-pipe)
-E46 BMW 330 6MT (225HP, what are common mods for this?)
-Some suggestions for more RWD would be nice. (I'm not wanting an S2000, or other convertibles, As i will still need to do alot of winter driving)

Very true. (I had to Google ZHP, i'm embarrassed) But what does the ZHP Package add? More power, Sport suspension etc? Also, A 6MT IS fun, but i like the idea of an SMG. Do E46 330's have that as an option, or was it only the M3's?

Its an E46 with enough changes that make that car special.
- Engine mods that equal a gain of 10HP & 8 ft/lb of torque by reprogramming the Digital Motor Electronics to allow a 6800 RPM max (up from 6500).
- 6 speed short throw shifter (for manual transmission equipped cars)
- 3.07:1 Final drive ratio w/ manual trans instead of the standard 2.91:1.
- Max Speed Limiter set to 155 mph (instead of 128)
- New M suspension, more "sporty" than standard or poor road package.
- Firmer shocks
- Smaller diameter anti-roll bars
- More rigid forward bushings
- ZHP control arms are different and use a stiffer ball joint
- Lower ride height by 15 mm (.6 inches) utilizing shorter auxiliary springs
- Exterior trim elements (front & rear fascia, trunk lid spoiler)
- Special exterior trim: Anthracite (charcoal) headlight & fog light surrounds, High-Gloss Shadowline (black gloss) trim
- Large diameter stainless steel dual exhaust outlets
- Extra thick Alcantara steering wheel (later switched to perforated leather)
- ZSP Sport Seats
- Alcantara & cloth upholstery to replace leatherette and standard trim
- Choice of "Black Cube" or "Silver Cube" interior trim
- Red needles on the instrument cluster
- Style 135's are added, 18x8.0" front, 18x8.5" rear
- Wider Tires: 225/40ZR-18 in front and 255/35ZR-18 in the rear.
- Reduced steering rack ratio. 13.7:1 versus 15.4:1

Now THAT sounds just about perfect. What denotes the ZHP package when one goes to look at a 330? (Chances are the 50 year old person driving it has no clue they have a ZHP package) As in is it worked into the VIN?
Energy
07-31-2012, 04:00 PM
Don't think its in the VIN but its easy to tell a ZHP apart from a regular 330i just by looking at it. Look for the M Tech II bodykit, shadowline trim, and special wheels on the outside. The inside will have M steering wheel and shifter, anthracite headliner, and cube trim.
One other RS'er has a ZHP convertible I can't remember his username off the top of my head.
I just searched craigslist and there's only one ZHP on there... in automatic too. Hmm they are rare but if you can find one they are special cars.
