Pre-paying for gas inside station

So normally when I pay for gas I just use my debit card at the pump. If I pre-auth for $50 and get up to $45, that's all I'm charged for obviously.
A couple days ago the pump wouldn't read my card so I went inside I prepaid for $50 worth of gas. Got up to just over $40 and my tank was full.
Just read over my bank statement and I was charged for $50 still:okay:
Is this normally the case? I doubt I have my reciept but don't want to make the same mistake again....

I think the attendant took it as "tips"

Aren't you supposed to walk back in and ask for a credit? I've only had to do this once, but it was down in the states

ya you have to go back inside and collect your change/amount unused.

You're supposed to go back inside to get the change if the amount is less than what you prepaid. Since debit is interchangeable with cash, I would assume they would just refund you in cash.

I remember paying at a Chevron and getting a second receipt at the pump after paying pre-paying inside using a credit card. It showed the actual amount of gas I payed for at the pump and the attendant said I didn't need to go back inside to get change.

If you use credit cards, the difference is refunded automatically, right?
credit cards are pre-auth'd for, say $50, but the transaction goes through at actual, say $40 - no need to go back
debit isn't 'pre-auth'd' its an outright payment of $50, so you need to go and get your change
credit card != debit card

If I'm going inside to pre-pay and I don't know how much I'm going to need; I get the attendant to hold on to my credit card until I fill up and then they charge it as soon as I'm done.

When your card is preauthorized, your difference should be charged back with in the week.
I do it all the time in the states when I fill up.

Actually, a debit card works the same as a credit card. When you preauthorize 50$, that would be the maximum amount of money that you can use to pump the gas. If you don't use that 50$ it would charge you the amount you used right after you finished pumping. No need to go inside and ask for change. So that 10$ that you are missing could be that you didnt hang the pump back properly and someone topped off with the rest of the 10$.
and yes i use to work at a gas station, it fucken sucks and boring as hell

cc- you get authorized for an amount but the amount doesn't go through until you're done.
so if you pre-auth for 100 and only pump 90, then 90 will be charged.
debit- the amount you pay is the amount that's charged; w.e you don't use is refunded
ex: if you pay for 100, then that 100 is already gone. if you don't use all of it though, you go inside and ask for your change.

Thank you OP for asking that question. I have always wondered about that (always been paying credit card at the pump though).

If you pay inside you are getting charged and have to go back for the change or get the difference put back on your card. That's how it works at Esso systems. It might change when everyone is upgraded to the new passport system. If you pay at the pump you only get charged for what you get. There will be a hold put on your card for the full amount thou for 24 hours.

^what he said
If you pay at the pump with debit or credit, it's a pre-authorization that charges after you finish fueling.
When you pay inside with debit or credit, it's not a pre-authorization. What you asked for inside is how much is charged right that instant. When you hang up the nozzle you go inside to get your change.

OT rant
It always annoy me why so many people pay inside at the store counter instead of at the pump, especially when they are paying by credit card and not getting anything from the store
Everytime I go inside the store to grab a drink or a snack, there is always 1 or 2 people in the line up paying for their gas with their credit card without buying anything from the store....fukers slow down everyone and block the gas pump from being used when the station is busy

Funny... I was all ready to hit the fail button when I actually thought about it and realized I didn't know the answer. :lol I always assumed debit at the pump was just a pre-auth like credit cards, but I've never actually looked at my debit purchases to verify that the $47 out of $50 that I "spent" at the pump is actually accurate.

I do this when I use the station's washroom to piss, because I don't want to come in, piss, and walk out :okay:
I pay inside to make a point I'm not a bum lol

I don't trust anyone with my credit card. Kinda shitty for having a bar tab but I don't go to clubs anymore.
If anyone was wondering cause I noticed this when I checked my online statements.
Chevron authorizes my Mastercard for $125 and Esso authorizes at $150. That is just a temporary authorization and after 4-14 days the amount you pumped is sent to Mastercard.
Always keep your receipts just incase!!!

This is how I usually do it if I'm buying a drink or something.
Its so natural now to prepay I have to think about it when I fuel in the USA.

I don't see any reasonable person going inside to pay if they have the option of paying at the pump. It's easier, it's faster and more convenient.
But often enough, the debit/credit machines at gas stations don't work. Gas stations have downturns for their credit machines more times than we would expect. If the pump does not accept my card or if it requires me to choose an amount, I go inside and tell them "I don't know how much it's going to cost me to fill up...." They will either let me go fill up and come back in (which is usually the case because I have such a trusting appearance :fullofwin: or they'll hold my credit card and I pay when I come inside again..
