Silver edition is the same as the Hero 2 with WiFi. $299.

White is the basic edition with a 5MP sensor and WiFi at $199.

Expect those prices to be $50 more in Canada.

I dunno. I may still pick one of these up. I don't have a camera capable of filming at slow speed (all of my slow motion shots are done in post production with After Effects) and that 720p120 option is very gently, yet firmly calling my name right now. As much as I hate to say it, the 4k mode is pretty pointless right now, especially for me... so it's not that much of a deal breaker.

Wonder how long it'll be before we start seeing 5k on these things...

the lack of any sort of viewing screen is the kicker for me and why i wont buy one, when you use a helmet mount it's almost impossible to tell where you are aiming, and i've ruined absolutely amazing footage because the camera was not aimed properly

for static mounts and things that are securely mounted, as well as the hand held pole they work pretty good, but for your average user helmet mounts are a huge fucking let down, especially when you ride somthing all day get back and realize your shit was aimed poorly all day

EDIT* and the Chesty is even worse for power/action sports, that shit isnt made for anything but walking seemingly

I think that was/is one of the biggest complaints about the GoPro, so hence the introduction of being able to view your shot with your phone now. I haven't given it a try yet with my Hero2 (I can't justify buying the wifi or the lcd pack), but I've heard some decent things with it.

I've always been able to have mine aimed perfectly... Take more time in your setup and be more deligent with how you eye ball it.

You can already buy an lcd screen attachment for the current GoPros, and the attachment comes with an extended plastic cover to keep the whole unit waterproof as usual.

Nope, they have always had it. Was debating whether or not to buy one in march but decided not to. Just gotta get used to positioning it or else mount it then shoot some test footage and review on laptop, haha.

Tried out the timelapse setting this morning. Video is 30fps at 10 seconds per image. Was done over a 2 hour span. Started with a full charge, battery died by the time I checked it 2 hours later :okay:

The LCD screen will kill your battery. The app is great, use it to compose, and then turn if off.

They have a collapsable pole that they started selling this year called the gopole reach. I bought one in February and it broke on the 1st day I used it. Really poorly made but I think it was from the first batch. I recently shot them a message about it breaking and they sent me a brand new one and even paid for shipping. Haven't used the new one I got yet but I'm hoping it holds up better than the 1st one I had. It's not cheap for a pole, but their customer service is great and they provide a lifetime warranty.

I use an XS extendable pole that I bought at comor. Even more pricey at 50 bucks. But the bonus of it is that it also has a tripod screw hole on the bottom which means you can use it in some pretty interesting ways.

For example for some slow motion vehicle rig shots, the pole can be used in conjuction with a suction cup mount.

I'll post a couple of interesting rigs I have done to get some neat angles tomorrow.

Oh the egg timer tip is a great one, a long with a slider or just by itself you can get some awesome stuff.

Whichever one you choose, get the Black editions. Between the 3 and the 3+, the + is a bit smaller, wifi is a bit faster. I don't think there is a big enough difference to justify the price difference between them, I'd just get a 3 and spend the money you saved on mounts.

Just start the timelapse, twist the timer, and the top half will start turning. It isn't perfect tho, the weight of the GoPro sometimes causes the timer to stop turning.

I left it on the porch, no tape. The wind shook the GoPro a bit, so the footage is a bit shaky sometimes. The timelapses were about 30 minutes each, taken at 2 or 5 second intervals.

used my hero3+ black for the first time last week in hawaii

used it snorkeling and while we were out whale watching. it's great for snorkeling but unfortunately sucks for something like whale watching where even big items (whales) out past 150+ just seem tiny, but that's ok, it's not meant to be that type of video camera

one questions i do have is what setting do you guys record in?

i was in 1080+ medium (didn't want the fisheye look) and the quality really doesn't seem that great...maybe it's just vlc?

what do you guys use to playback your videos on the computer? quicktime?

what size microSD cards do you use? i got a 64bg for mine

any other tips or tricks would be appreciated, i'm going to be travelling for a year so i want to be ready to know what settings to use in certain situations so that i don't miss capturing anything

That's pretty average. Mine with the LCD Bacpac dies in about an hour and a bit because of the LCD. Maybe get a Battery Bacpac if you want more runtime?

I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5. If you want free/cheap, try Sony Vegas. The basic version is cheap (as is Adobe's cheaper version, Premiere Elements).

I have had two GoPro Hero HD cameras since 2010 and never used either until a few weeks ago.

First time out my inexperience cost me a GoPro on the highway (recovered but not before it was run over). The last couple of weekends I have had a TOTAL blast with the other one!!! The coolest thing is that the GoPro is NOT just an "action sports" camera. The creative element is amazing.

I can't even imagine how amazing the newer models are.

You need to try out the X1000V. The problem is that people grab the old AS30, or AS100 and try to compare it to the Hero 4 black.

Also as twitchy zero pointed out I prefer the form factor of the action cam over the go pro for most things. I hate that stupid teletubby look when you rock a go pro snowboarding, whereas with the action cam you can just mount it right on the side of your helmet perfectly.

Pretty much the only place that the action cam is not suited for mounting is a chest mount. Which I actually solved by using their backpack shoulder mount when I bike which works even better than a chesty.

In one of the series we cover, we're required to use GoPro as they're a sponsor of the series, in the others we're free to use what we like. All Motorsports, only rarely do we mount to helmets. We've got two(?) X1000V's which just sit collecting dust. If I recall correctly, they had tonnes of promise, but were sidelined because they can't handle the dynamic range of being mounted inside a car (super dark dash, super bright through windshield) or the lower light levels as dusk begins and turns into night. In those situations, the Hero4 is superior.

But yes, for mounting to a helmet I can see the benefit of the form factor for sure.

The biggest grip to that review was the lack of a waterproof casing which is another $15-20 bucks. After that you can use most GoPro mounts/accessories.

I can live without any settings / indicators, and have to use the App.
The colour on the Yi seems better too.

So the only thing is the shakiness. And even that is YMMV.

the Hero4 Silver has an LCD built-in whereas you need the LCD backpack for the Hero3+.

I don't think the Hero3+ back plate cover will be the right size for the Hero4 Silver LCD. I do have some spare screen protectors if you can get over your OCDness lol. Wonder if I can find dimensions for the LCD screen.

Anyone ever have problems with updating their Hero 4 Silver? Turned on my brand new camera and attempted to update it with my phone. Everything was going fine until the camera starts flashing red lights, shows "camera updating" on the screen, turns off, and then repeats over again. Can't access any other functions and the touchscreen isn't turned on.

Anyone ever have problems with updating their Hero 4 Silver? Turned on my brand new camera and attempted to update it with my phone. Everything was going fine until the camera starts flashing red lights, shows "camera updating" on the screen, turns off, and then repeats over again. Can't access any other functions and the touchscreen isn't turned on.

I tried to update the gopro out the box and it always freezes, called tech support and didnt fix it. So returned it to the store to get a new one.
