How do you guys get the brake dust out from the plastidipped rim? Mine was black and now it has a dusty/dirty black look to it... I'm unable to clean it out!

Love this thread, thanks for all the posts everyone
It's so intriguing to me seeing how popular a matte finish is on cars now.., I have always been into matte finish on cars, for as long as I can remember, so it's just cool to see so many people doing it now. Love the pics!

Any idea what one of the wheels weigh?
Brake dust pro works well even on matte white.
Roughly 30lbs per wheel. This design is more for trucks and domestics, but I think it looks clean on the g.

anyone use just matte clear or metalizer on anything? I find the coverage very thin and not that durable. slight friction seems to rub it off. I might have to go back to using full colours :okay: Also parts of the dip was lifting off the wheel corners :yuno:
Maybe try a couple base coats of matte first? And then throw on a couple extra coats of Metalizer.

It should be, I've goo gone'd pretty much the entire hood and both doors of the Prelude back in May without any issues.

Close to it. I'm still decided between glossing it, leaving it matte or going with a pearl look.

Has anyone used silver metalizer before? I'm considering doing Gunmetal grey with a silver metalizer on top, curious how that would look...
Metalizers seem to be thinner and runnier than standard matte dips..just be careful with how thick you lay it on to avoid running
Lightly smoked some tail lights..

My biggest mistake was dipping my wheels which have about a billion spokes...
(these guys... same wheel, not my pic, nor bmw)
http://www.e90post.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=790152&stc=1&d=1354227935
The wheels on my wife's Mercedes were even worse; 17" 17 spoke wheels with much smaller gaps between each spoke. Kept having to spin the wheel 90 degrees every coat because I kept finding spots without any coverage. Took a solid 6 hours to do all 4 wheels about 5/6 Coats. One good thing is that you can apply a nee coat in little as 15-20 mins.

Thinking of doing my car matte white. Does anyone have an idea on how many buckets I would need to cover the whole car and approx how many coats I should be doing? I've also heard plastidip can be mixed to create a different colour. Is this true? Considering it IS basically acrylic paint
Posted via RS Mobile
Depends on the colour of the car..painting a black car matte white can take 5 gallons, roughly 8 coats for full coverage..painting a silver car in matte white might just take 3. Yes, dip can be mixed and tinted to create custom colours.

09-09-2013, 07:48 AM
It took 2 gallons to do the bottom half of my silver 350Z. The top half was nearly 2 gallons. That's good coverage on a small car too.

Yes this is true. I have mixed a couple of custom colours
Depends a lot on base colour. If base is white or silver it will take less than if base is a bright colour. I did 4 (3.5) gallons on my car and it wasn't enough to fully cover the dark blue below. I would get 5 gallon to be safe as well as having extra to fix any holes or damage you may get

I just put my order in for a 2013 focus ST but it's in the tangerine scream colour. I'm pretty sure the blaze blue would look pretty damn good on he car. Pros for plastidip is of course it would protect the oem paint job. But what about the cons on a brand new car? How do you remove the overspray from inside door and trunk seals? I would imagine it would overspray like any other paint you'd spray a car with...

orgasm_donor
09-09-2013, 07:38 PM
Its all about prep. Use frogtape or blue 3M tape to mask insidethe engine bay and trunk areas. Just be careful when removing the tape as the dip may come off with it. Two-tone is particularly difficult because you have to remove the tape before the dip dries.
That said, it is rubber. So even overspray can come off with a strong cleaner or even rubbing it vigorously with a cloth.

From my experience, any car that is driven year round (say 10k+ a year). The dip job is probably only going to look good for that 1 year period.
So if you do it in the spring or early summer, by the time that next spring rolls around its going to be looking ratty in places.
Highly recommend wrapping the car if you are looking for something to last more than a year.

I did a matte black for my center console on 2011 CRV because the grey paint is fading here and there. I did about 4 layers and I feel it's a bit sticky when you touch it. Is it normal? Do I do something wrong here?
Yes it's normal since it's pretty much rubber

I dipped these rims last year a couple hours before revscene's summer meet. It was fairly easy... just make sure you have even coats and not to overspray. If you overspray an area, it will bubble and won't have a smooth finish. It has a weird rubber feel to it but looks great from afar.

Did you have any difficulty removing the plastdip just from the lips without ruining the dip on the spokes?

Bought a fully dipped car 3 months ago, still peeling the dip off of odds and ends. Moral of the story, make sure you apply enough coats to make it peel okay, otherwise youll spend countless hours with minimal results. Other than that, the dip withstands a fair bit of abuse, no noticeable rock chips, only big imperfections was leaky washer fluid that seemed to stain the dip oddly enough

I'm rebuilding my DH bike and want to paint the coil on my fox vanilla R. Figured plastidip would work a million times better than spray paint that would just chip off. I think I had a few cans laying around. Bet you ill never find them

Did this ever happen?

Sure didn't. I found my cans of plastidip but they were rusty and gross so I recycled them. Not worth buying a whole can to try again

That's what one can looks like (plus 3 coats glossifier). The brake lights are on, they're darker than they appear in this photo.
That looks awful. should have left them alone.

lots of people spray more on if they are looking to take it off so its thicker and easier to take off

Bought myself a project.. was looking for winter rims for my 17" rubber and came across these filthy 15" bastards for less than what I was looking to spend on rims alone and the tires are basically brand new.
So I thought I would try my hand at dipping them.
Day one:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i199/nodnarb17/photo1_zps62760ed6.jpg
Bought some steel wool and after about 10 minutes of manual labour, said :fuckthatshit: and went back to Home Depot:

Still took a while with power tools.. Not perfect, but good enough for the chicks I hang out with:

Coat two or three, wet:

Dried overnight:

Did a few more coats today and will put them on tomorrow.

Going to touch them up a bit, but overall pretty happy with results.

I hope you removed the plasti-dip on the bolt seats?
Acetone and a q-tip before installing wheels, otherwise you haven't torqued the wheels correctly.

how long does it generally take to dry for a plastidip layer? I used hight heat block paint and it tends to dry fairly quickly within a few hours.

15-30 minutes depending on temperature.
it must be dry before you add the next layer.. it took me about 3 hours from sanding to finished ( for my rims. )

Intense teal with gold metalizer. The gold isn't visible until sun or flash reflects onto it.

There was a local vendor or member that used to dip people's wheels. But searching didn't yield any results really. Was curious on the cost difference between just doing it myself (which I could easily do) or just get it done by someone else. Being a renter, it's not always easy having to paint parts and get away with it

I did some plastidipping on the rdx elite wheels to see if I could make them less busy and look more like civic SI wheels. Used grey anthracite metallic dip.

I used Plastidip to do the wheels on my car initially. I made them white to give the car a more athletic feel, it was pretty sweet. I wasn't super pleased with the look of it up close though, it had a lot of imperfections despite the entire day of prep-work I had done.
Then after a week of brake dust they looked like total crap, and I couldn't wash them clean because of the textured surface. So I ended up removing it all. I'd never use the stuff again, well unless I was broke and homeless.. then I might consider it to spruce up the beater I was living in to help me get away with parking it in nicer areas.
Meanwhile my other car has a set of rims that I had powder coated white to match the car, has been about 4 years now and they still look awesome (and you can actually wash them off quickly).

Other people mention having ST's yet I'm the only person on this entire website that posts pictures of it.
And for my ST, the Rotiforms are in new condition, not even a single scratch. It would be dumb to blast off the OEM finish and paint them white (as who knows who the next owner of the wheels would want). Also, did you use the glossifier? I've cleaned plastidipped wheels with no issues
MrPhreak

I can't remember if I used a clear coat or glossifier, so probably not. I did it a few weeks after I got the car, so they were clean with no marks

Oh, it's a fiST, not a foST. Maybe that's why I don't remember =_=

It would be just fine. Plastidip has an amazing ability to not care what it’s being applied to
