So idk where to put this so I'll put this here.

So the story is I usually have my desktop downstairs in the living room where everything is hooked up to. However, now I bought a new desktop and I want to hook it all up in my LAN because Wifi connection is too inconsistent and I have currently 25mb/s plan for house internet so I don't think I want it any lower and inconsistent over the coarse of a gaming session or whatever, it gets really fustrating.

I'm under Shaw now and I called them but idk dafuq the guy told me about different outlets and stuff. So in my room there is an ethernet outlet. Idk where it goes or idk what its for. Assuming it's actually for phone line.

Now how about would I go to add an extra LAN connection in my room? It's something like this:

Would I be able to add a LAN line in my room? I'm so noob at this. The modem is downstairs and stuff. Would I have to drill a hole or something or can Shaw do something and hook it up? Or do I need those potruding lines where the cable has a wire that goes into the socket.

Try powerline ethernet. NCIX has it.

I've been using it for my parents streaming live TV from Asia for over a year. No hickups whatsoever.

If your home is fairly new there is probably a panel in a closet somewhere where all the lines connect. The phone lines use cat5e the same as ethernet lines. you can convert it to an ethernet line, i have the tools, i can help you out.

And if by the existing router there is a telephone jack, or ethernet jack in the wall you can do the same thing, and then splice the connections together.

I'd go with nabs' suggestion and check out where the line goes to. Do you have an ethernet jack in all the places you'll want internet access? If so, once you find the source to the jacks, you can just place the router in there, and connect it to jacks where you'll need internet access.

That jack in your room, you should be able to determine whether it's for the phone or not.

Phone jacks (RJ11) are smaller than network jacks (RJ45).

nope, smart panel. smart house panel. so many names for it. could also be media box but i've never heard it being called that. Even if its just a phone line going outside, you can convert it by splicing the lines.

If you do get an ethernet powerline, buy it from futureshop incase it doesn't work out, you can return it without the bullshit restocking fee.

Not necessarily... while ethernet only requires two pairs and most phone lines will be at least two pairs, you'll likely have connection problems if they're not twisted pairs, and speed issues if they're not properly twisted (Cat5e or Cat6).


In short... it MIGHT work, but don't count on it working well.

Powerline ethernet is the way to go. It's literally plug and play. I setup a 40 year old house with this and it works like a hot damn. That is unless your house is already pre-wired. Then I'd go that route.

U can see if the jack is ethernet or not buy plugging in a ethernet cable or phone cable. If the plug can't fit the ethernet cable then its a phone jack.

Ethernet power line may not always working depending on how the electrical system is hooked up in your house. I know some houses have the electrical system hooked up weird and the powerline system doesn't work.

Best way to just to run an ethernet cable to the router/switch if you find that the plug in your room isn't a ethernet jack.
