It's going to be a game within a game, and it's Free 2 Play. :P

Only if the game has a crack that allows me to add 6 additional mass driver blasters and heaps more shield to the planes.

Man... WC was one awesome game... Angel, Paladin, Maniac, Hobbes, etc. They were all memorable. And I hated having Spirit as my wingwoman because she was always utterly useless.

wow he reached his $2M goal quite fast

I'm close to donate the $30 but still a bit skeptical. I'm excited that a dev finally is brave enough to make a MMO + sim into one game (and no subscription to boot). However, I think it's over ambitious....either the studio that picks this up is going to dilute the crap out of it and take out tons of features...or it's going to be a feature creep that'll come out in 2018 and still be a disappointment from the long ass wait.

In any case I hope EA and Activision stays clear of this game even though they have the money and tech to develop this (noting it's already running CryEngine 3). Would be sweet if BI picks it up ...the guys that make ArmA

i pledged a week ago

they just reached $3M...persistent universe with 40 star systems greenlighted
they want to reach $4M in the next 10 days to get mod tools, more star systems and more missions.

If you are interested and tired of big publishers watering down games recently like EA and Blizzard..I think you should consider pledging. Minecraft and the recent Natural Selection 2 got started this same way.

I would prefer if they had a monthly fee,

free to play games always end up going the micro transaction route,

and when that happens, the game always goes to shit.

please oh please just make it a monthly fee

it won't be subscription based...neither will it be free to play..at least that's what i hope "no pay to win" means...but people can buy ships and stuff :suspicious:

Looking forward to this game.. Privateer was the first space sim game i ever played and loved it, then played Freelancer and loved it as well.

How does the funding work? if you donate money you get exclusive ships?

I don't understand how that works.. are these ships not available to you if you simply buy the game on release day?

They ran it into the ground like they do with everything.

When you donated at different tiers you get those ships with life time insurance...meaning it'll be replaced if it's lost...but that was only valid during crowdfunding so it no longer applies.

In the game you can buy any of those ships with in-game currency...I also believe you can hijack them if you prefer to be a pirate. Then in the game you can use again the in-game currency to buy different types of insurance for your ships.

yeah at the time i wrote that I didn't realize they were gonna be their own publisher as well

Saw the news update with the 300 series, and just had to upgrade to the 325a heh. Really looking forward to a few titles for this upcoming year; this, BF4, and the new Star Wars. It'll be a treat.

2014 bump!

Anyone here still interested in Star Citizen? Funding is now at $65MM and the universe and game dynamics have grown massively in size. The current Alpha has its dogfighting module running for several ships (currently the 320 series) for free.

For anyone that doesn't know what Star Citizen is (copy/paste):
Star Citizen is an upcoming space trading and combat simulator video game for Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux[2] in development by Chris Roberts and Cloud Imperium Games. Star Citizen will consist of two main components: first person space combat and trading in an MMO-style Persistent Universe and modifiable, optionally cooperative private servers including a branching single player campaign known as Squadron 42.[3] The game will feature Oculus Rift support.

Both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are set in a 30th-century Milky Way centered around the fictional UEE (United Empire of Earth). A strong focus will be placed on player interaction, with player behaviour influencing and being influenced by a dynamic economy system.

Star Citizen will feature gameplay similar to other Robert's space sims, abandoning the traditional MMO 'click to kill' system in favor of skill-based, space shooter mechanics. Ship upgrades will factor heavily into combat, but player skill will ultimately determine game performance.

Star Citizen will have multiple game types, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to contemporary MMOs to an offline, single player campaign with drop-in-drop-out cooperative play.

For anyone still watching that hasn't purchased a ship yet, they're going to be having a sale tomorrow. 5000 Auroras (the starter ship) for $20/each. Probably the best deal anyone will ever get until the 2016 launch date. Includes the arena commander module along with alpha, beta and the full multiplayer and singleplayer campaigns. Should be a $60 game at launch! Sale starts at 11am tomorrow.

Link to current ships that are given to early donators:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge

All ships will also be available to earn in game as well for those who want the full game challenge.

So because my nerd ass is so excited about the game. I haven't really decided on my play-style yet but I'm thinking I'll probably do a little bit of everything.

One really cool feature that has been recently added is the FPS ship boarding module. Basically teams of marines, private soldiers or pirates will be able to sneak up on larger capital ships, breach through the hulls and commandeer ships.

Some photos of the new FPS module I found on Reddit:

I'm really interested in this game, but I'm not paying a dime for it until it comes out
