2013 Emergency Refresh Civic Goes on Sale -- Nov 29

Honda warns dealers to clear out 2012 Civic stock, 2013 emergency refresh on sale Nov. 29 (http://www.autoblog.com/2012/10/23/honda-warns-dealers-to-clear-out-2012-civic-stock-2013-emergenc/)
Thanks to an anonymous tipster, Autoblog has learned that the so-called "emergency refresh" of the Honda Civic is just around the corner. In fact, the automaker is already urging its dealers to clear out remaining 2012 model year stock because "The changes made to the 2013 model will make the outgoing 2012 Civic a difficult model [to] sell when they are side to side." Those are the words of David Hendley, Assistant Vice President of Honda National Sales excerpted from a recent letter to dealers. The communiqué goes on to note that the refreshed Civic will go on sale on November 29 – a date, we note, that coincides with press days for the Los Angeles Auto Show.
According to Hendley's letter, buyers can look forward to "dramatic improvements to the exterior styling that moves Civic into a more premium sporty direction." The text also promises that the 2013's interior will receive "upgrades and improvements to bring more sophistication and quality to its appearance." For his part, American Honda President Tetsuo Iwamura has previously been quoted as saying that changes will be made to "improve the Civic's drivability," suggesting suspension and powertrain alterations are afoot as well.
In other words, don't go out and buy a brand new Civic now. Either wait for the emergency refreshed 2013 model, or wait for the big discounts on the current 2012 models.

in terms of coupe/hatch it's hard to beat the EK chassis

I wonder what it will look like..
I don't understand how there could be an "emergency" refresh? According to the article, it seems like these new changes will be so drastic that it could hinder the 2012's sales? If that's the case, surely there's got to be leaked images out, how could Honda keep the production of the new civic under wrap and then suddenly tell all dealers to clear out the 2012 models without having a media session or leaked images?
Seems weird to me...

It's not really an emergency, since Honda announced they would refresh it a couple months into 2012. It's just the wording given from the media to exaggerate it. It's more like a reminder to the dealers.

Honda's latest styling has been "evolutionary."
Their 8g -> 9g cars, Civics, Accords, CRV's, etc, haven't seen the big change as they've seen from the 7g -> 8g.
Not necessarily a bad thing, since it's subjective. The interior on the other hand :heckno:
I've been in both coupes and sedans of both 8g and 9g, and 9g feels terribly cheap. They tried to mask the cheapness by making it funky, but it just makes it worse IMO.
Hopefully they address this in this "refresh"

It is an emergency in the sense that the 9th gen car was universally panned by all automotive journalists, including those from Consumer Reports. IIRC, the CR review ranked them dead last (or 2nd last) when the 8th gen car was still earning their CR recommended distinction.
Typically, you don't see facelifts on cars until well into the 3rd or 4th year of the car. For the 9th gen Civic to get a major facelift only 1 year after its initial sale, that in itself showed how much of an emergency it was to Honda.

At least Honda is willing to admit to that there is a problem with their "products" of late, and make changes that seem to be going in the right direction (I.E. new Accord).
I am excited to see what the new civic will look like.
I like the 9th gen sedan! Nice lines, not too aggressive but still sporty look. 2.4L 200hp 160tq on the Si? Feelin it

It's like the 5 or 6 blackberry phones that are to be released next year. No one knows because no one cares anymore. The civic has become overpriced for what it actually is. Those who want the sporty si version could get a FRS or the veloster turbo for more power. And say you wanted it for pure gas savings, there's the Mazda 2, prius C etc. IMO, I would like to see a civic type R, but even that won't save it. Maybe if they made the civic look like a super car haha

True, Honda did eventually came around to recognize the shortcomings in the Civic, and by the look of things, they also seem to finally catch on to the fact that the overwhelming majority of their current products suck, and are gradually taking action to correct it. I guess the message only took a good 8 - 10 years to sink in?
Let's hope they can get back into the game and make us some fun cars all over again.

i'm not a fan of the recent styling of the civics, but man have civics come a long way.
Sure, one could argue that the older models are more fun to zip around in, but the newer ones (2006+) are very smooth and comfortable. Whenever i drive one I feel like i should get one for a DD.

I realize they look nothing alike, but the 9g Civic has always put me in mind of some of GM's product... the Cobalt, Cavalier, etc. The design just looks lazy, cheap and far too generic. That's not to say it's a bad car; rather, it's as if Honda didn't bother trying at all.
The Corolla looks better, and, sadly, that's saying something...
Edit: I went car shopping with my dad the other day as he's looking for a smallish commuter car and the Civic was one of the cars we checked out. Sure, while they're definitely an upgrade from previous models, it just doesn't quite compare to most of the other cars in the compact class anymore. It's no longer the benchmark that it once was.

I have a 2013 civic as a winter beater, it's a pretty decent car to boot around. However, I do agree with the interior been a complete mess and annoying. I hate the fact other drivers can basically know how fast you're driving or what station or song you're bumping. I guess Honda thinks most of their owners are 60+ with bad eyes.

Lol, I shouldn't have put "winter beater", what I meant to say was a everyday car I use for work and stuff. And I do drive my A5 during the winter but I decided to get myself a car that's much more reliable, better on gas for running around and not worry about wear and tear.
And my mistake, I meant to say 2012, not 2013.

Keep in mind part of it has to do with crash test regulations and pedestrian safety standards, which lead to everyone having similar bumper dimensions/height and such, as well as aerodynamics and fuel economy standards which necessitate certain greenhouse shapes.
But as far as styling characteristics go, I see what you mean. Shapes of tail lights and headlights and other minor aesthetic values do seem to be "copied" from manufacturer to manufacturer, to a certain extent...

Meh. Still not feeling the look of the thing. I like that Honda acted as fast as they did, but I think the styling just isn't right. But, to be honest, I think it's the entire redesign they did a few years back that I still haven't grown to like. The shape (and two-tiered dash) annoys me.

Fun fact:
There is no such thing as "JDM headlights/taillights" for the Civic because it was Honda Japan who saw the design of the Acura CSX, and told Acura they wanted to use the same design on the Japanese Civic.
Only difference is cleared-out side markers and the grill of course.

The current Elantra is actually not bad. Throttle travel vs actual mapping isn't very linear, and the springs are hopelessly soft. But the chassis is top notch, so if you can get a handle on the luxury boat body motions (ie. very, very smooth driving), it can still be sort of fun.

On the contrary, the 2.5 Altima is pretty damn fun compared to everything else you listed. I had a chance to drive one around for a week and it accelerates pretty damn quickly, at least it feels like it is because of that whiny bitch of a CVT. Sentra is same segment as Civic.
And I sell Nissans...
I also had a short 3 week stint at Honda... (quit because I hated working at that dealer)
12' Civic's interior materials are in fact inferior to the Sentra (to my surprise, usually its always been the other way around, I usually find the Honda product superior.... )
then you compare model to model, the Sentra is much more premium feel and build than the 12' Civic!! Same with features! Sentras have higher end optional features! (dual zone climate control, NissanConnect, back up camera, keyless ignition and entry.. )
They screwed up big time with the initial release 9th gen, although they have sold tons. most average joes buy them because.... well, its a Civic! the car already has established value and quality....
I could say, the Civic is no longer the segment leader of this class overall...
7 gen to 8 gen was a huge step forward.... 12' Civic 9 gen is basically half a step backward.... 13's are nice. they are better, but there isnt really anything GREAT or noteworthy about them.
akinari kun, wait till you drive the 13' Accord... I could say its even better than the Altima Overall. Feels much more nimbler, interior is higher quality and better built.... and touring models come with twin LED projector lowbeams... :sweetjesus:

Biggest fail on the new Sentra is the manual gearbox is only available on the base model. If you want any of the option packages, they make you also take a CVT transmission. What a shame.

I would think enthusiasts will consider the SR package because it adds the rear disc brakes. But regardless, it's too bad you can't any package (like the Luxury or Premium package) without CVT. Nissan is basically saying sorry if you want a sunroof, leather navi or Bose system, you can't have the six speed.

But apparently, the K24 in the 2012 Civics are kind of problematic in that the pistons and rings are common points of failure, even when the engines are extremely new.
Really makes you wonder where the heck the legendary reliability Honda was once known for has gone...

Elantra is actually surprisingly fun IMO. The tiptronic isn't half bad and the engine is rev happy .. Definitely one of the nicer compact cars I've driven at work. Interior looks good even after a few months of service.
Corolla is boring as hell to drive and the interior looks like shit after only ~15,000kms. Everything in it screams economy from the radio, to the shifter, to the steering wheel.
Altima CVT :heckno: Not a fan of the drive mechanism but interior holds up to regular wear and tear fairly well
Ford Focus Titanium - self parking, very refined interior, nice good quality touch screen, really nice sound system, bluetooth audio streaming w/ ford sync. We have a few of these with more than 20-30k and the interior still looks pristine
Only car I haven't actually driven is the new civic .. would be fun to see how it compares

Damn. I honestly would buy a new Altima sedan 3.5 6MT if that existed. I will never buy a CVT. Ever. Nissan has really left the sport sedan w/ a 6MT out in the rain this time... Maxima's are all CVT's now, Aren't they?

That is depressing. Nissan's VQ series is one of my favorite motors, But i want a manual. They have really cut off alot of people with not offering atleast a 5/6 speed auto. Anyone who used to buy Nissan's for their practicality and still enjoyed a sporty car will be looking elsewhere...
