Hey guys new in DSLR world. However I came a cross a really good deal...

All of it are brand new

Canon T5i Body Only - $419
Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM - $349

What do you guys think?

For the Lens is it really worth it to buy a filter or lens hood is enough? Will the filter degrade the image quality?

XplicitLuder

i think it depends what filter but i dont think any will degrade it. Most ppl use it more for protection. But a hood would be nice :) use to have one on my tokina 11-16 and will never use it without anymore haha

Don't put cheap glass in front of expensive glass. I only use filters that have a purpose, like NDs and such. UV or whatever filters are just things camera stores sell suckers to make margin.

Use a lens hood. Serves a purpose and protects your lenses just fine.

Looks like a great price to me. I'd just pick it up, because the more you debate the more shots you miss.

And I always find that if you buy the wrong thing or want to upgrade, there's always a market for used gear, so you're not always losing much by buying first and thinking later :fullofwin:

Late pass, you probably bought it already. But that is a great deal! I just bought the t5i bundled with the 18-55 kit lens and another not so good one for 1g and I seriously LOVE that camera.

Though I don't have much comparison, the only other camera I played around with is the 60D. But the t5i is awesome.

Until Dec. 2nd, Adobe is offering their Photoshop Photography Program (notably Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5 among a couple of other things like 20GB of free storage) for 9.99/month. You need to sign up for a year though.

If you have LR and CSx, this likely isn't for you. But given the cost of PS CS6 is north of 600, if you needed it this seems like a pretty good deal, without taking into account LR.

^^ Admittedly I haven't taken a thorough look into Photoshop CC, but how exactly does it work? It seems to me that it is cloud-related, but I don't supposed it is entirely cloud-based, is it?

For those already using LR, don't forget that the upgrade price to the latest version is only $70 or $80, so it is still cheaper to just pay for that upgrade licence instead of subscribing to this discounted plan.

IIRC, Photoshop CC is basically full Photoshop installed to your computer. There are cloud components to it, but the program runs locally. You get all upgrades going forward as you would upgrading from one version of CS to another. You also don't need to be connected to the internet every day. Adobe will do a check every 120 days I believe, so as long as you have internet access within 120 days there shouldn't be any issues.

And you're right about LR. I was really thinking about this, but since I just bought LR5 for less than $100, and my only use for PS is panorama merging and removing items from photos here and there, I don't really feel that even at the discounted cost, it's not really worth it for me.

Not sure how hot of a deal this is but I bought it.
Costco:
Canon Family Portrait Camera Accessory Kit (http://www.costco.ca/Canon-Family-Portrait-Camera-Accessory-Kit.product.100086099.html)
$199.99 for the following:

Comes with a
Manfrotto MKC3-H01 Tripod (Amazon selling this for 89.99)
Canon 50mm f/1.8 (this lens is about 110.00)
Gary Fong Puffer (20 or 30 dollars)
Infrared remote for your Canon camera (30-40 dollars i think)
a Canon sling bag (pretty good little bag)

IMO this was a pretty good bundle for guys like me, who don't own too much stuff and shoot only casually! Remember, with Costco if you break anything you can always return it after 2 years (3 with manager approval)!

I bought mine at the Richmond Costco so I think stores will carry this... not just online

What type of camera are you looking for? Budget? There are already "pre-Black Friday" sales on sites like Dell.ca for older Rebels. If you're looking for FF, you likely won't have super crazy deals.

In that case, have you looked at Craigslist? The 60d alone could generally be had in the $500 - $600 range locally in the used market, with some high mileages one occasionally coming in under $500. The shutter's expected duty cycle for the 60d should be around 100k (actuations), so make sure you take that into account when shopping for a used body.

While true about the MSRPs, once you decide to sell the total bundle offer for the remaining stuff ends up being close to buying everything separately and used.

Personally I would just pick up the 60D, and fill in the other $400 with one of the many 17-50ish 2.8 variants from Tamron or Sigma. That's probably a better use of $1000+.

Here's a good deal, with 60d, OEM grip, 50 1.8, Sigma 18-50 kit, bags, cards, reader, remote for $850:

Canon 60D w/ Lots of Extras (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/ele/4160431469.html)

Ronin
11-25-2013, 04:45 PM
That's not how I see it. I see a 60D with a worthless lens, a 50 and some other stuff that doesn't add up to $1000. The 16GB card is $10 from NCIX and that bag isn't more than $50.

I have at least two friends that asked me for recommendations on cameras when they bought their first DSLR and thought that the 18-200 was a good deal because it was $700 but it covered such a huge range.

Then they wonder why they can't take pictures in low light or why their JPEGs look so mushy. Everyone tries that lens. Everyone regrets it once they see the sharpness of the $99 50 1.8.

Steer clear and spend your money on better lenses.

m3thods
11-25-2013, 04:50 PM
^To add to the above, if you're looking at getting a 18-200 and don't plan on changing lenses, need the entire range evenly, and plan on taking pictures in the dark, you're better off getting a compact or a superzoom.

Like this one for $1300:

The Sony RX10 Review ? One amazing Superzoom! | STEVE HUFF PHOTOS (http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2013/11/11/the-sony-rx10-review-one-amazing-superzoom/)

:)

Otherwise, the whole point of getting a dslr aside from IQ is the versatility that different lenses offer. So if one doesn't plan on changing lenses, then there's really no point buying into a dslr system.

Thanks for the offer. But with the other stores out there (even FS and BB have loosened their strictness I find), LD is my last resort now for PMs.

I tried to price match a 10-22 from Best Buy going for 699 at the time. The first LD I went to (King George) gladly obliged, but when I opened the box, it was just the lens! As in, no documentation, no plastic- just box, styrofoam, and lens+caps. They returned it, put another one on hold at Brentwood and said I was all good to go. I get there, and all of a sudden the manager is called in to tell me that they can't sell it. I politely ask why when I was told that I could, and they said that the price was too low to price match. I get that businesses aren't in the business of giving away products, but here I was with proof of stock and price, and they still refused. Left a bad taste.

Edit: For you aspiring astrophotographers out there, the Bower/Samyang/blahblahblah 14mm 2.8 is on sale:

yeah but from what i understand they're basically the same with both having their positives and negatives (nex7 with more mpx, more settings etc; nex6 with less noise and two types of focusing tech and wifi) and if you were to buy the nex6 in addition to that 20mm pancake locally @ BF prices it would still cost more than that nex7 deal

I'm seeing going to return my Nex6 to sony if not for that nex7 kit than the nex6 bf prices

I would still leave the Nex 7 off the list. The Nex 6 is newer. You'll get less ISO noise from the 6, it has wifi, faster focus with hybrid AF, standard hotshoe. The selling point of Nex7 is mainly physical controls.

If you don't shoot much get the 3N.

I don't think I've ever seen higher-end filters on sale. Your best bet is a store-wide discount. Something like "take 20% off our entire store".

That said I've never seen these locally, so you'll likely have to look at the big boys down south (BH, Adorama, Amazon)

Best I've seen is $65 for just the Focus and around $100 for both. I'd be interested as well so if someone see this at a better price, lemme know.

Deal: Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM for $301.11 Shipped - FM Forums (http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1271743)

It's ok. I think by all accounts the 55-250 has better IQ, albeit with no USM and shorter by 50mm. It'd make a good travel lens.

I'm not sure how much the Tamron 70-300 USD VC comes at, but there is a ton of praise for it on POTN.

I use a Tamrac Rally 5, lets me carry my 10" laptop (Asus transformer), has a front pocket for small things like my point and shoot/filters/batteries, side elastic pocket for something like a water bottle. I use it with my EOS-M so it's on the bigger side.

I dig ThinkTank's mirrorless mover as it's fairly slim but I wasn't sure if it'd fit my laptop Mirrorless MoverŽ 30i (Heathered Grey) (http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/mirrorlessmover30iheathered.aspx)

The Tenba bags are on the pricier side but I like their designs
Shoulder Bags for Professional Photography | Shoulder Bags All Sizes (http://www.tenba.com/Categories/Shoulder-Bags.aspx)

Obviously there's a lot of lowepros to check out, but Manfrotto's Unica line is not bad either and I saw some pretty good deals a few weeks ago on their website.

Does she want it because she wants to be able to switch lenses (that you inevitably have to bring where you go)? Or does she want it because she sees friends use them, see their great photos, and thinks that's the only way to get great photos?

If you answer yes to wanting to use different lenses, then you can look at a dslr or mirrorless ilc. If she associates "good photo quality" with a dslr, don't buy one because you'll likely post it on CL shortly after buying.

If you really want to go the dslr route, you should think to buy used to see how you like that type of system before committing money further.

A5K is pretty good at $400...okay @ $600 with the kit telephoto + bag. I say this because it's practically an upgraded NEX-3, where A5100 is more akin to a NEX-5.

yep I'm shocked XAVCS is now on the A6K, there's no room for a replacement/upper tier this year unless they add 4K and IBIS...which would likely shoot up to $1000 anyways...might as well buy the A7ii with that budget.

She have used a DSLR before and the pictures she took with it are pretty good.

The issue I always have with DSLR is that is so heavy to carry around and honestly the only time we will use is when we go on vacation which is like once to twice a year so it seems like a waste to spend over $500 + on a camera. A few friend of mine who got the DSLR honestly say they don't use it much anymore being so heavy to carry around. Not to mention you look a tourist with it lol.

I'm not sure what her experience with mirrorless is, but you're getting identical IQ if you look at a comparable entry-level DSLR but you get the smaller package. If she really wanted an interchangeable lens camera for travel, I'd definitely look at mirrorless ILCs as being your number one priority. Of course, that's assuming she really needs to switch lenses.

Ronin
06-29-2015, 02:02 PM
Unless you're buying full frame or a high speed sports camera like a 7D Mark II, DSLRs are pointless. They're just bigger and heavier with no other benefit over a mirrorless body.

Still a crop sensor but twice the weight.

i'd say look into the system of lenses or adapters etc. before deciding on a body. if u don't plan to buy more lenses, get a premium p/s like lx100 or rx100. had a very similar convo a long time ago and the person was happy with the lx7 until now still.

having said that, i have a lot of olympus stuff and buying refurb when they have 20-25% off direct from olympus is the way to go

Ronin

Fixing a point and shoot? Don't bother. If it isn't under warranty, it'll cost you more just to fix it compared to buying a new one. Perfectly capable point and shoots are available for under $300 like the Nikon S9900.

On the other hand, point and shoots are useless now that most phones have equivalent image quality.

The only advantage that p&s have over smart phones is the optical zoom. But most people using p&s / smart phone cameras probably don't care about this capability all that much...

So I ended up going in on the Kickstarter for the EDM and it arrived today. Smaller than I thought it would be. It actually feels physically smaller than my Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home thought it was able to fit everything in with room to spare. The Crumpler seems to have a deeper base but narrower width, while the EDM has a narrower base but wider width. I'm undecided on which one I want to keep at the moment. Will give the EDM a few days on the road to figure out how functional it actually is.
