Admittedly, I don't follow Initial D all that closely, but by the looks of it, the series is still focusing on cars from the late 80's and early 90's. And that makes me wonder -- isn't the author just targeting an increasingly shrinking audience base?

Even with the grand daddy of anime series -- MS Gundam -- new stuff keeps coming out, even if the idea of Gundams is re-hased over, and over, and over again. And even if they were to re-visit some of the older timelines, producers there still do variations and modifications meaningful enough to differentiate the new series from the old series. So in Initial D's case, wouldn't it make more sense if the current GT86 races against some of the current counterparts -- RX8, R35, NC Miata, FD2, S2k, Evo X, GE / GP Impreza etc.?

I disagree with you. the cars since Stage 4 has been heading closer to current times with relatively modern cars such as s2k, evos, mr-s etc. Its true that the protagonists are still using 86 and FD, but thats what makes it more original imo. Because current cars have so much electronic equipment to assist the driver. using older cars w/o all the abs and etc. which makes it exciting and taking car control to another level.

As a whole, I'm actually a bit disappointed with Stage 5.
Somehow, the racing just doesn't seem to stir up my adrenalin as it did in the previous stages. I find the music isn't as good either.

I'm glad they added some more backstory to the characters instead of just mindless racing every episode,
but I'm not liking the way it's executed in ep 9 and 10.

Too much "stoppages" during the race to flash back to the backstory,
and it's killing the momentum of the race for me. Nice cliffhanger on ep 10 though.

I don't think the Initial D manga is a weekly serialized series. so, yeah 30min of action packed animation will burn through a lot of dialogue based printed material. they might release one or two chapters a month in Japan. someone correct me if I'm wrong.

not a weekly release in japan, if i remember i didnt see too many releases while i was in japan. therefore its a monthly release or hes just does it whenever he feels like it. each race takes easily 10+ chapters to complete. the manga focuses on everyone, the anime mostly on the ae86. also think that each chapter of the manga is roughly 15 pages of art. this is 18min of anime which would take a lot of pages to complete one episode.

Quite disappointed in this stage as a whole.
The races were bland, recycled animations, WAYYYYY too much dialogue, pacing was incredibly slow.
Timing of the eurobeats seemed a bit off at some places. They would play it when nothing dramatic was happening.
The last battle was ridiculously boring, because of the slow pacing.
And it turns out to just be nearly full of filler dialogue rambling about nonsense,
only to drag out a full episode to set up whatever is next, with that kid vs Takumi. wtf.

Idk if anyone still follows initial D, but final stage is supposedly out today! It continues where 5th stage left off and should bring us into the "Legend" trilogy.

It's basically a revival of First Stage with new CG and new voice actors. Takumi is now voiced by the same actor who was Setsuna in Gundam 00, and they've used rather popular VA's for the other characters as well.

I still think it's worth a watch for the nostalgic feels.

As a side note, I also noticed that they placed more emphasis on Natsuki Mogi's chest this time around. Japanese anime and their big animated chests...

Just watched it today. Although it's the same story with minor changes (that don't affect the plot in anyway), it felt refreshing to watch it again.

The updated animation style is much better than before.
