I saw it at Oakridge today. It looks pretty nice for $519 and MS Office is pre-installed.
The $130 add on type cover is a rip though...
I think the Surface has more functionality compared to an iPad (take notes, write docs/ppt) Posted via RS Mobile |

No thanks, a non hd screen on a brand new tablet is simply unacceptable in this day and age. Posted via RS Mobile |

Wait for the Windows 8 Pro Surface version coming in a few months.
The price might be well over 1k but it runs everything that you can install on a Win 8 computer.

I didn't like it. Played with it at oakridge on my break. It's a new tablet for Microsoft so I assume there will still be bugs and fixes with it later on. If I wanted a 10' tablet I would rather get the Nexus 10

I GOT ONE!
note form for easy reading
-32GB is really 17GB cause windows RT uses 15
-office is a "lite" version limited functionality (basic stuff is fine)
-vimeo can't play smoothly in either HD or SD
-youtube can't play smoothly in either HD or SD
-98 free apps avaliable
-cut the rope (free) lags
-the keyboard cover doesn't have any way to hold it against the unit so it flaps around
-keyboard has zero feel (better off using on screen)
-OS is beautiful and simple to use
-"cleartype" screen is actually pretty damn nice considering the resolution
-Battery life seems to drain very quickly comparing to iPad (3rd gen) surface 3-4hours or so iPad a good 8 hours
after three days of owning it, I gave it back cause there's just too many limitations.
I would say stay away at least for now untill they develop it a lot more. Nexus 10 is going to be out soon and its a pretty nice unit.... might give that a shot

Yea I didn't like the soft keyboard at all. The hard one is nice. Didn't know it would lag or doesn't have a good screen. Battery life is 3-4 hours? (Simple surfing) Posted via RS Mobile |

More interested in the "convertible" laptops rather than the RT tablets. We just got the Toshiba U925t at work and it is an interesting beast. Waiting for the ASUS Taichi to come in before I make a decision on upgrading my laptop.

I too played with it at Oakridge. It was lagging even with cut the rope. Keyboard is neat, but has zero feel. I could get used to it after awhile. Loved how there's office and I can actually do some work on it lol Posted via RS Mobile |

I tried it out at Metrotown yesterday and came away quite impressed. Hardware design is terrific. VaporMg felt great in the hand, the kickstand was all that promised, the full-size USB port makes me happy beyond compare.
The core apps - IE10, Office, Music, Photos - all worked quite well and it was pretty speedy. The Touch Cover takes some getting used to but not bad overall, managed to type pretty decently after a few minutes. I did not try out Youtube or Vimeo, so I will probably go back and do that today as I will be at Metrotown anyhow.
Dropbox works via browser, so that makes life a bit easier for me.
The biggest thing is that it needs to have a larger/more alive ecosystem to have the chance to replace my Nexus 7. As it is, since I barely use the other apps on my Nexus, I am quite tempted. All I need is basic email, browser, productivity and I'm a happy camper.
Anyone else have impressions?

I want a lightweight traveling companion that provides me with the basic web/computing necessities. The Surface Pro does that, but it will be quite a bit more expensive and I am worried about the heat, as the convertible laptops/tablets I'm seeing at work do get fairly hot (Toshiba U925t, waiting for the ASUS, HP/Sony units) and are a bit ungainly. The price factor also plays into the debate - I don't need my portable device to do too much nowadays, as I have a desktop handy, and the cheaper price of the Surface RT is certainly a factor.
I'm not in any hurry. I can wait until the Pro comes out and compare the two.

can anyone give some feedbacks to the samsung xe500t1c from rogers with the LTE? i'm debating whether should get that or the surface for when i go back to hk for a bit. i can get the samsung xe500t1c with LTE from rogers for $299 on a 3yr contract @ $11bux per month so it'll roughly cost me about 700ish or get the surface? i'm leaning towards the xe500 since at least it runs full windows 8 on it. and what's the difference between this one and the regular wifi models??? coz the cost is like almsot the same??

Tried the Surface out at both Metro - didn't like it at all. Lag while running apps was my biggest issue - even after a system reset (if you can call it that). Office was no better than the iWork package for iPad, and the soft touch keyboard SHOULD be included for the price that you pay. And the advertised storage space is half of what it should be - they don't bother to tell you that OS, Office, and the rest of the stuff take up about half of the storage space. Youtube can't be played smoothly in HD - I'm not even going to expand on that, especially in this day and age. The app store has barely any apps, which is a turn off coming from an Android or Apple world.
This device is definitely for those that have never had an Android or Apple touch/phone device. If you currently have anything from Android/Apple, and have invested in apps in either app store, you will be immediately turned off by the prospect of having to look for similar apps that you are currently using, or that a certain type of app doesn't exist in the MS app store for the Surface.

its definitely in the right direction! Asus has touch screen laptops that run much faster though. I wouldn't buy one purely based on the game cut the rope being laggy as heck when I tested it at Oakridge. Y u no fix lag! Posted via RS Mobile |
