I decided to head up seymour and see how the new snowies are in the snow, There was about 2-3 inches of snow on the road, and about 8-10 at the top in the parking lot:

Snow tires are brand new Hankook i*cept evo w310, in 215/45/17. For a performance snow which handles about as well as a good all season in the dry, They do quite well in the snow imho, On the road up, 2-3 inches it felt perfect, Very good control... I stopped and started with minimal wheel spin on a fairly steep Seymour hill, Only ran into some trouble once i got to the top and stopped in some foot deep drifts... I suspect ground clearence (lack of it) was also a big factor in this however, Some wheel spin and I was out. On the way down, Even fairly hard braking yielded great results, with minimal anti lock. Great overall tire for the money! Highly reccomended by me... (140/corner) Car is an 07 Civic Si.
P.S: To the idiot in the newer prius obviously running crappy all seasons/summers, put on Winters or don't come up the Mountain... Or at the very least try not to come so close to sliding into me...

To the OP, good on you for going out there and testing your setup. Not a lot of drivers know how to handle themselves in snow, and the best way is to practice in an empty lot.
I wouldn't have gone up there in the dark myself but hey, when you're excited, why not?

Winter tires work best at 7 degrees and under, doesn't necessarily need to have snow on the ground to use them effectively.

Mountains are opening right away. Those of us that plan on being at them know you don't want to get caught with your pants down. Whistler opened up like 2 weeks early last year, and I was sure glad I could be there for opening day instead of pussyfooting there worrying that my 35 series z rated tires were gonna cut loose on me.

Comparing SFU to Seymour is apples to oranges. I used to work on Mount Seymour and drive that road frequently day and night so I know how bad the road conditions can get and how they change quickly.
They don't take very good care of the road during this time of year (no salting or sanding, you'd be lucky to see a plow at best). Throw in the fact there's zero light, constant risk of fog and poor visibility, plus the top of the mountain is basically abandoned at night except for one guy who lives up there.
If the OP ended up getting stuck or in the ditch, everyone here would be singing a different tune.

last year I went up to cypress at night to test my volvo and its new snowies. I didn't drive like a douche. Just wanted to make sure control and braking was in order. I've also done the same with other cars to make sure they are suitable for winter. Heck, might even try it this soon with a 4x4.

Agreed. If you think driving up in Seymour/SFU is bad, you are definitely sheltered. In Manitoba, the snow covers the entire wheel and up to the fenders.
Driving in "Vancouver winters" is extremely manageable as long as you're not an idiot and have some common sense.

tires chains can help quite alot when you hit the rough stuff.
they also bite into slush/ice alot better from my experience. snow tires would generally ride on top of the hard pack where as chains will BITE into the hard pack.
chains are generally considered to be a last resort and are also cheap insurance from getting completely stuck. some highways in bc require you to carry snow chains or chain up at check points such as the coquihalla.
here is a good article in the globe and mail explaining chains:
Chains: when winter tires aren't enough - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/car-life/chains-when-winter-tires-arent-enough/article4182748/)
with the tow truck in a box and a set of chains you really should be able to go where all the big boys go with their 4x4's as long as you arent leaving pavement :fullofwin:
a good compact snow shovel is a must in my opinion. more so than any other device (chains, tow truck in a box) when driving around in winter. also a 50/50 sand/salt mix is good to have as well. there are instances where you just need a tad bit more traction than what you're getting and chains or the tow-truck in a box isnt necessary. for these situations sprinkle down a good layer of sand/salt infront of your drive tires for added traction.
Hey T4RAWR, what tow straps/chains do you use?
I've been thinking of picking one up, but I keep hearing stories that they'll just snap and murder someone. Should I even bother?

Hey T4RAWR, what tow straps/chains do you use?
I've been thinking of picking one up, but I keep hearing stories that they'll just snap and murder someone. Should I even bother?
What tow straps/chains to use?
Princess Auto generally has good prices on straps, choose a set appropriate for the maximum force that will plausibly be exerted on them.
You've been hearing stories that straps/chains will snap and murder someone?
When a weak link in a chain snaps under exertion it will become a projectile, and if it strikes a person has the potential to kill. Straps are a much safer option.
Should you bother?
If a vehicles tires are spinning a strap laid in the direction of travel can give the added traction required to gain forward momentum, they're useful to the average driver for that purpose. I personally would think it rather foolhardy for the average person to use straps for towing on public roads, so I would not consider them useful for any purpose beyond gaining traction.
chains are generally considered to be a last resort and are also cheap insurance from getting completely stuck. some highways in bc require you to carry snow chains or chain up at check points such as the coquihalla.
Chain requirements are imposed on commercial trucks not personal vehicles, so that information is not relevant to this audience.
If a vehicle is not able to gain traction with winter tires, the driver should strongly consider waiting for conditions to improve before continuing travelling. Chains will improve traction moderately, but a driver's ability will remain a constant, and under conditions severe enough that winter tires cannot gain traction, they are probably inadequate to continue. There's no shame in finding a safe spot to pull over, but there is in overestimating your ability and crashing. The type of circumstance where chains are used to travel up a side street to a main road is an obvious exception to the above.
If you do carry chains, learn to put them on when you purchase them not on the side of the road.

Chains are great for pulling cars, you're not going to break a chain pulling a car.
Unless you people are in a ditch or stuck in a snowbank you don't have to worry about breaking a chain/strap as you're not really putting that much force when you're using it to get started or to get out of your stall. Hell, I've pulled my old Volvo out a ditch using a 1/2" piece of nylon rope for christ sake and it didn't break haha.
So much misinformation I just don't even...

Hey T4RAWR, what tow straps/chains do you use?
I've been thinking of picking one up, but I keep hearing stories that they'll just snap and murder someone. Should I even bother?
You can pick up "recovery" straps at princess auto for a reasonable price. you will probably need to get a few shackles in varying sizes. the rule of thumb that i learned was to pick up a strap that is rated for 3 times the weight of your vehicle. that is the minimum. of course, getting a 30,000lbs strap is great if you can afford one. my strap is rated at 12,500lbs and i've pulled plenty of vehicles with it no problem. you can buy the baller ARB 30,000lbs snatch/recovery straps at cap-it but they're very expensive. like mindbomber said, i would go with a strap vs a chain as chains can become projectiles. find proper points on the vehicle to use. never tie a chain or strap to a tow ball as it'll become a huge 2 inch wide canon ball once it snaps loose.
if you're looking for something for getting out of stucks for yourself the tow-truck in a box might be a better choice over straps. with the tow truck in a box you can do a self recovery. with straps you generally need a second vehicle.
i got stuck at cypress. thx to the 4 guys that pushed me out out the parking lot...

i've been stopped on a road check on the coquihalla more than once and told by the officer to chain up.
the ministry of transportation and infrastructure states:
"Drivers are required to obey Winter Tire and Chain Up signs throughout the province. The designated routes require that vehicles are either equipped with winter tires or carry chains from October 1 to April 30. Click on the maps below to see the regional highways requiring winter tires and/or chains."
Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/SeasonalDriving/winter_chains.html)
So much misinformation I just don't even...
chains are fine for towing in my opinion. but when you do a hard pull (tighten up on slack and try to bounce the car/truck out) its not such a good idea. the straps tend to stretch a bit where as chains dont. chains are perfectly fine for towing though. of course this is just my opinion.

No doubt, chains rarely ever snap unless you are at the upper limits of the rated capacity; they'd be completely useless if that were not the case.
I addressed the question assuming people would realize that the strap vs. chain question is only relevant when pulling up a vehicle out of a steep incline or ditch... it's pretty obvious a chain isn't going to snap on a flat road, it's not bloody string.

IC now, your prior response wasn't clear.
It sounded as if you were saying, it is required for ALL personal vehicles to carry chains and use them at certain points, not only personal vehicles not running on winter tires.

This is probably a stupid question, But it's better safe than sorry: The Civic Si comes stock with a tow hook next to the exhaust, which is shaped in a sort of oval, with one side attaching to the frame, and the other with a circular hole, Is this going to be a strong enough tow point? Or is this one of those stupid ricey things honda put on because all the idiots who think they're "cool", And it's not actually functional?

Read your manual, it will identify all the tow points on the vehicle.

it should be ok to pull your civic out on that point since its attached to the frame.

The difference between tow strap and chains is if the link snaps, metal goes some random direction with quite a bit of momentum. Tow straps' elasticity absorbs the brunt of the energy. But always put some type of jacket / blanket on top chains/straps/ropes before you yank on it with a motorized vehicle; any smashed lights etc these days cost more than a BCAA Premier membership.

so let me get this straight.... you're going to get out of your car put this under the tires / get onto these to get yourself out..then you have to stop to go pick them up / get whoever is with you to pick them up and stop for them to get back in the car only to have moved a couple feet and probably need these again ?

shovel + chains + traction mats.
each tool has its place.
for the most part you'll be just fine with the shovel. you should be able to dig yourself out and clear a path so that you can get out. 90% of the time will probably be spent with the shovel clearing around your car.
the chains are cheap insurance and also required in SOME parts of the province such as the coquihalla. you can buy a set and they'll probably last you the life time of your vehicle.
if i had to only take on i'd take the shovel. if two out of the three then the chains + shovel.

+1 on those tires. Went up Baker opening day last year (plenty of snow on the road) and didn't have a single issue while there were plenty of 4x4's in the ditch.

I just came back from baked on Saturday and the upper part of the road to baker there were no ditches. If you lose control you basically become a pin ball. That's how much snow is up there right now.

you do realize evening rates start at 4pm right. they only close at 10? wow so that must be, like, your bed time or something. to me 6pm is considered. evening/night time considering it gets dark at around 430. Nope i did not read the thread. could really careless that you got your honda stuck in the snow. Good thing two guys were able to help you shovel. no way in hell would you be able to do that alone. you sound like an idiot so no point in trolling.
hope you dont get stuck next time, better bring chains and a snow plow. I have no idea why you are talking about lift tickets here.

No Idea your relevance to anything said, but still can't come up with anything half decent to type so you quote a movie??? I still don't follow on the night run which I kindly commented cause I don't understand how you go at 10am to board or ski when that's when the mountain closes.
I'll get some snow pictures up tmrw from up here to add to the thread!

You just seem to be coming in here to shit on the guy for getting stuck, and then ranting about his bedtime and lift tickets, its just way out of left field. However to add some relevance to something at this point. How deep was it up there? I heard it dumped today/this evening.

This is the yard. It's getting warmer up here so it's not as much of an icy yard as it was before. Maybe about 2-3' on the untouched areas.

I'm worried about the hill coming out of the student parking. My snowies are at 60% and slip a bit.
