Mazda announces diesel engine for Mazda6 (http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/29/mazda-announces-diesel-engine-for-mazda6-larger-2-5l-for-cx-5/)
http://i.imgur.com/ItQJ9.jpg
As we reported earlier, Mazda is making some waves at the 2012 LA Auto Show by announcing the 2014 Mazda6 sedan will bow with a 2.2-liter clean-diesel engine under its hood in North America. The Skyactiv-D engine will show up on the option sheet after the Mazda6 sedan goes on sale in January with its 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine. The move makes Mazda the first Japanese manufacturer to offer a diesel engine in the mid-sized segment in the US (the Volkswagen Passat also offers one), and the company says the Skyactiv-D-powered Mazda6 will also benefit from the manufacturer's brake energy regeneration system, i-Eloop.
The vehicle will be available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, and Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates are still pending, as are official power figures. Expect to hear more solid details once the the vehicle launches in January.
Meanwhile, the 2014 CX-5 will offer buyers a larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine in Touring and Grand Touring models, in addition to the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder offered across its entire range of trim levels. The new engine delivers 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque (up from 155 hp and 150 lb/ft for the 2.0-liter) and shuttles power to the ground via a six-speed automatic transmission. The EPA expects to see 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway from front-wheel-drive models. Those numbers slip to 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway on all-wheel-drive models.
I would fart rainbows if a diesel wagon comes out. And shit pots of gold if the next Mazdaspeed6 comes as a diesel. Very much looking forward to this... this car will look amazing lowered with a set of BBS wheels. The rear end kind of reminds me of the Lexus GS350, which is another car that I'm liking a lot.

Needs a new/aftermarket grill... Those horizontal slats are not working for me but swap it for a honeycomb like grill like on the CX-5 and I might be looking at my new car :fullofwin:

A diesel Mazda 6 is cool and all, but it's this news that really caught my eye
Meanwhile, the 2014 CX-5 will offer buyers a larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine in Touring and Grand Touring models, in addition to the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder offered across its entire range of trim levels. The new engine delivers 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque...
The CX-5 is one helluva great CUV that handles like no other on the market at the moment. It lacks power however, so a power boost will make this thing an absolute blast to drive. If only they made the stick available with AWD.

Finally the automakers are realizing that the easiest way to get the mileage increase is not to make better gas cars but to sell more diesels.
I went on Ford's UK website just after my mom bought her focus and found out that you can get a proper wagon ("estate") with a 6-spd dual clutch tranny mated to a 2L turbodiesel.
WHY DO WE NEVER GET THE NICE THINGS?!

I think it is more elegant than the Fusion, and better looking than the Accord in the rear, where the taillights make the Accord look like a Genesis. The front of the Mazda also has more character than the Accord's.

The interior looks pretty up to date to me. The only niggle is the small navigation screen, but a bigger screen is supposed to be coming to the US - this is a Euro-spec model we're looking at in the pictures.

^ that the nav is the big thing for me. I like how all the new cars is now integrated, the mazda 6 is still a double din which is great for aftermarket but most new cars you really shouldn't have to.

Werd. The touchscreen nav is still ridiculously small.
dL
yeah its small by todays standards.
also the cx5 will probably not get 6spd awd. you dont really see that config on any suv these days. i wanted the cx5 but the two flaws with the car are the small touch screen and the weak motor. the 2014 model solves one of those problems.
might also wait to see the new forester.

Eh... It depends how you look at it. It's an integrated unit in my car and it limits what I can do with my car. Luckily a system exists where I can disable the stereo portion from the rest of the car and install something else without affecting the HVAC portion, but it's still a bit of a pain. I know 99.999% of the population don't care about modifying cars, but having that big integrated unit is a pain to work around when installing stand alone ECU's while keeping my stock HVAC system in place.
But I'm pretty sure I'm in the miniscule minority with this complain. :P

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the new F30's interior layout, which makes the car feel cramped, visually. The E90 had a no-nonsense, business-like interior that was clean, classy and down to earth. Having driven the new F30s I can say with confidence I much prefer the interior of my E90.
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but out of all the interiors posted above, I prefer the 6's interior. It's the cleanest interior of them all. I originally thought the CX-5 had a bland interior judging by the photos, but once you sit inside one and actually see all the minor details and sculpted lines, it's very nice.

Yeah, the touchscreen is kind of laggy. Mildly annoying.
Oh, for some reason if you plug your phone in to the USB to charge it before you start your car, the Sync system locks up. My theory is that it's searching for an update package (connected via USB, right?) and freezes when it doesn't find it.
So while with an MS computer you have to close all windows and restart, with an MS car you have to turn the car off, open the door, then turn it on again :lawl:

I think the only thing I dislike of the new Mazda6's interior is the steering wheel. I do think the Altima has a great interior too, but more luxurious looking than the 6.
All the other ones don't do it for me, and the Fusion is the worst with the capacitive buttons.

altima interior is mediocre at best IRL...
looks nice in pics, but still plasticky.... and a few pieces are quite cheaply put together.. the steering wheel buttons are painted and feel like theyre gonna fade... centre console is one big rubber maid bin bolted onto the floor with two bolts.. etc.
(and i work for Nissan too.. :okay: )

The Fusion and Altima have the worse placement of the nav screens imho. All the other interiors place the screen higher so that the driver doesn't have to look down and tilt to see the screen.

The GPS on the CX5 is powered by Garmin: easier to self-update maps.. if your car does not have GPS but has the touch screen audio, it doesn't cost much to get the module to have GPS added. How much is Honda asking for the GPS?
Also, I swear that only the Japanese knows how to make a Nav HU that doesn't lag like a b*tch and have menu placements that make sense

pretty sure the north american japanese cars have their nav units software made in north america...
yeah not liking the touch sensitive buttons on the fusion.
also, seeing "sony" on the dash just scares me away.
it makes me think that its gonna use some proprietary shit and not play well with my android or apple devices.
thats pretty much the reputation that sony has engraved in my mind over the years.

I'm really looking forward to this car in Mazdaspeed guise. I went to see the car in person at the dealership, and well, its definitely designed to have something else in the engine bay as its quite empty. The car is very Japanese, in a good way. The nav though was definitely a little on the small side, and most likely will be updated.
They are doing something weird with the hood, its not quite as heavy as a full on steel one, but definitely not aluminum. You'd think they'd move to a full aluminum hood or something. Same gripe I have of my Mazdaspeed3.

While the cost of diesel is total bullshit compared to gas, I wouldn't go as far as saying the difference in cost/L defeats the purpose of purchasing a diesel.
You're still going to get more torque and mpg, compared to gas.
Now when are we going to get small/midsized 4x4 diesel trucks and diesel/electric hybrids?
Graeme S
01-27-2013, 05:20 PM
If I could've gotten diesel for my mom's Focus, I would have. Diesel would have to be about double the price of gas for it to be equivalent in terms of cost/km. You can go from Calgary to Vancouver on a single tank in a diesel golf. I'd say that brings the cost/km down quite a bit, wouldn't you?

The only diesel-electric hybrid I know of is the Citroen DS5, and 'Murica's desire for high-displacement V8 petrol engines in EVERYTHING killed the demand for a small diesel. Every market outside North America has a diesel option for the smaller trucks. Hell, even the RAV4 (while not really a truck), has a diesel in Europe.

It makes perfect sense for an SUV to be diesel powered. You get the great low-end torque plus great efficiency, it's a win-win situation. All crossovers and family SUVs should be diesel powered :ilied:
