Cousin recently bought a 95 Accord EX-R sedan and has noticed that even when the car is warmed up, the heater blows warm at best. I am unfamiliar with Honda's, but upon a quick inspection I noticed that, even after driving the car around for a half hour, the water temp gauge needle sits at maybe 1/3. instead of slightly under half way like I am accustomed to seeing in other cars. While I am obviously aware that this gauge can't be relied on, I am wondering if the problem lies in the coolant temp sensor and if not, where the issue might be. Car runs and drives fine otherwise. I'm unsure of the car's history as the car was only purchased recently but coolant looks fresh.

thermostat probably. If your temp sensor wasn't working properly your car would probably have bad gas mileage and rough idle.

Sounds like thermostat may be stuck open.

Older Hondas - and generally most cars that age - probably will need thermostat replaced.

From what I remember on my '00 Accord it wasn't a very hard job.

thermostat is likely stuck/sticking open.. not allowing the motor to properly warm up and produce heat

All the times I've ever had to replace a t-stat was because it would be stuck closed causing the car to overheat. Didnt think to consider how the opposite could hold true, lol. Thanks for the help guys, I'll put in a new one and see how it goes.

I had that happened on my wife's 2005 Mercedes C class. It doesn't produce heat when I drive from Burnaby into White Rock, but it's just because of highway driving and gentle gas pedal (engine doesn't rev above 3000 rpm). However, if I stop at traffic, it will warm up to normal temp. Once I get going at highway speed, it will cool down again !

Thermostat. My G20 has trouble warming up too... time to pick up some parts and get 'er done.

Might as well flush coolant system too while you're at it.

heater core could be plugged too if you gauge is reading normal.

Try pulling the the heater knob out and twist the knob to left more

My 91 accord temp gauge always stayed around 1/3

if the heater core is plugged on hose on the firewall will be hot and the other will be luke warm or cold. My jeep is like that, would have fixed it myself but the whole AC system needs to come out:okay: Gonna try compressed air to blow it out

i have a problem that may be related to the heater core, any ideas?

the temp gauge is normal, definitely not the thermostat (just replaced it last year)
sometimes it blows normally and gets warm, and sometimes it struggles to get warm at all.
if it sometimes gets warm as usual, could this mean the heater core is functional?
if its plugged, could it even "sometimes" work normally?

It could be.. Check your coolant level, maybe it needs to be topped up. If you are away filling it on a regular basis check to see your water pump weep hole is leaking (Indicating ou need a new one).

maybe air in the system floating around intermittently causing blockages, try bleeding your cooling system.
