conquering phobias
i have a fear of heights. like just about all fears its irrational and i want to get over it or at least get used to it. might try some measures this year. its probably my new years resolution as well.
anyone ever try to tackle any of their irrational fears? whether its a fear of heights, crowded places, social phobias, etc...

face your fears
go to a place where you think it's scary that is high up.. stand in the spot where you fear falling and stand there for a long time
good luck

then you die :troll:...
standing behind a fence could be just as scary
yeah im considering bungee jumping because thats the closest thing to actually falling i can think of.
when i was in macau and saw people standing on the outer edge of the tower, i looked at that like it was the scariest thing in the world.
also want to try skydiving although the idea of that doesnt scare me nearly as much.

There is nothing irrational about the fear of heights at all. It's pretty logical actually. It's an evolutionary response system for preventing injury or death. It is for the same reason why people are afraid of the dark, insects, etc. Our ancestors slept at night instead of hunting for a reason. They didn't want to take one too many steps and fall off a cliff lol. Having said that, I do believe that people can develop an abnormal degree of this fear which can affect their day to day lives, are you one of these people?

most people have a fear of something (like that mustard chick) because of an incident in their past. Fear of heights is like being afraid of a gun pointed at your head. I used to fear roller coasters, then I went on one and found out i fuckin love em LOL. Exposure is the best fix for a fear imo. Go hike a trail that leads to the top of a small mountain or somewhere with a huge view off the edge of a cliff.

maybe i am, im not sure. watching people who are buckled into an extremely safe system who can take a step over a high edge without fear, that to me is sort of an irrational fear.
also when you see people step on plexiglass thats on a tall tower, that freaks me out as well.
for example, sears tower: http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/59342149.jpg
you know that by all means that is safe, yet you are still afraid of it. thats kind of irrational.

I'm afraid of height even climbing on a 8ft ladder. However not scared of roller coaster or any other amusement park ride. I dot really know how to solve the height issue either, I use ladder at work often and I'm always afraid I'm gonna fall.

Of all the height things, that's gotta be the least scary.
seems like it would be no sweat, but i find it pretty scary to stand on confidently. last time i was on one of these some little kid starts jumping up and down right next to me, lol.
btw, always wanted to ask you if your name has anything to do with the starcraft team liquid?

stupid plexiglass floor at CN tower scared the chit out of me lol.
Planes/looking out of a window from the top level/top of Cypress mountain looking down at vancouver I feel fine.
For some reason getting near an edge at a large height gives me crazy vertigo and makes me feel sick
How do you deal w/ flying/climbing ladders OP?
ive flown a lot and if theres any uneasiness of flying, its not because of heights.
occasionally bumpy rides can make me feel nervous but its not so bad.
yeah climbing ladders is the same. i definitely feel uncomfortable doing it but i climb short ladders all the time. when i see people climbing ladders up buildings, that im not sure i could do.

Accept your fear and know that it does not define you...I don't think we can intellectually eliminate fears but we can certainly acknowledge them, accept them then conquer them with an understanding that fear is only a mental construct and not a rule.
For example I had, and still have, an extreme phobia of public speaking however with meditation came the acknowledgement that it is there in my head but its only an illusion and not a rule. I am not my emotions or thoughts, I am the awareness of them. Our brains function is to interpret data but we are not the mental process of interpretation just as our hearts purpose is to pump blood yet we are not the beating of the heart. Only the awareness of both. We easily accept that our heart beats without our conscious control, I believe it is the same for the mind.
Just be aware of the fear, watch it, accept it, trust in god and jump out of a plane. You will live and conquer the fear. If you fight it you are stuck with it.

Agree with you on accepting it but not on eliminating it
Our brains have a lot of negative hard wiring that does us no good.. fear being one of them. You start with the awareness of it or conquering it, the higher you build your awareness then it will eventually leave. Or conquering it you will establish a new pattern in your brain.
Hope that makes sense lol

its very hard to conquer fears. your brain will always go into that "what if" state and it will each time you are put into an uncomfortable state. what i find for myself is that rather then being scared, just keep reading up on it and face your phobias/fears back and forth until one day, u will just be comfortable with it
