Going to take a hard stance with the gf and say no Dineout this year. I much rather go to the restaurant and order off the menu instead. I hate being restricted to only picking from 1 of 3 things plus I can care less for desert. I'll leave paying about the same but will be much happier.

When I go out to eat somewhere special (e.g. Hawksworth), I'm prepared to spend at least $100. If I'm spending that kind of money, I'm at least eating full portions and not just some half-assed creation for the masses. The thing with Dineout is that at $38, I'm still going to spend $100 between 2 people after a glass of wine, taxes and tip. On top of that, I won't get to eat what I really want, I'll get substandard service and I'll be in surrounded by people who don't *ahem* dress up for the occasion.

I'm not a foodie, but you always get what you pay for and that includes fixed menus.

And if I want dessert, I'll go to some place that specializes in desserts such as Thierry, or Sweet Revenge.

But there are no new things to try during dineout. It's also busier than usual and I don't like eating at places where the kitchen is constantly pumping out the same few dishes as the food isn't nearly as good imo.

Dine-out in so many situations, for people that are interested in trying a new restaurant give such a distorted shitty experience compared to what you would get had you gone on a regular night. Its to get asses in the seats and keep restaurants from suffering through the slowest time of the year. The places are full of people who rarely get out and the restaurants couldn't give a shit if they saw them before next years dine-out, as they know their best customers are staying home to avoid the crowds. Its a likely way to go to an awesome restaurant you've been wanting to try, and leave saying "hmmm, that was not what I expected."

Looking at their menu it's a good sample of their usual offerings. But without any mention of their serving size, you might run the risk of leaving quite dissatisfied.

I was only interested in checking out Black & Blue this year, but for a steakhouse they aren't even offering STEAK on the menu?!... wtf ...

Joe Fortes always has a solid menu to choose from, maybe I'll go to MARKET... or maybe I'll just skip it all this year, $38 isn't exactly cheap anymore anyway, with a glass of wine (or 2, or 3) it's already over $100, and I don't care much for the desserts, so I'm basically paying the same on non-dineout meals at these restaurants ...

I spent $300+ at Blue Water for 2 and was barely satisfied :lol

Went to Yew on Saturday and it sucked shit. Service was shit, the waiter did not fill our water at all when he filled the table beside us and saw that our glass was nearly empty. That's too bad.

I've always enjoyed my time at Yew, from the food to the service. This is part of the reason why I don't do Dine Out anymore. Restaurants sometimes have to sacrifice a few things, be it quality of food or service because it's the slowest time of year for all restaurants. You should send an e-mail to the general manager and see if they will make things right. But for reference from an industry professional, see below.

Dine-out in so many situations, for people that are interested in trying a new restaurant give such a distorted shitty experience compared to what you would get had you gone on a regular night. Went to L'Abattoir on Sunday night. I was pleasantly surprised - food was pretty good, service was good. I thought it would be a fancier place - but the ambience overall was pretty casual. The servers were really helpful.

$38 a meal, plus $12 for a glass of wine. I thought the food was pretty decent, the gravy on my pork shoulder was a little salty, but that's my personal preference.

L'Abattoir is one of my favourite restaurants in the city. They have things down to a science (literally in a culinary perspective) also one of my best friends is a server there. He is already dying from dine out so far he told me. They do a great job their of treading the line between casual and classy. Great food and service without the dated stuffy feel.

DO NOT GO TO GRIFFINS

Went there over the weekend and it was horrible. Service was terrible and they ran out of yorkshire pudding for their prime rib entree (which was an extra $10) by 830

I went here for a dinner a little over a year ago since I had heard good things about it. Man was I disappointed. Had the sable fish with an oxtail ravioli. What I got was a bland piece of fish, a piece of ravioli with some bok choy and some broth to on top. It looked like they tried to do Chinese fusion but failed on so many levels. Definitely won't be coming back.

Griffins, in general, is pretty failsauce.

Herons at fairmont

Appetizer was seafood chowder with grapefruit
Wasn't appetizing at all grapefruit just made everything bitter
Entree was short ribs really tender but small ass portions
Chocolate cake for dessert was pretty good

Overall not worth 38 bucks
Wish I could upload photos on phone

I'm actually going to end up doing 2 dineouts this year, but not because I and the missus wanted to.

I went to Carthage Cafe on Commercial on Friday and had their $28 menu. I was surprised to see that the main was a full size portion that was normally $24. So, I basically paid another $4 for a salad and a piece of baklava. The table added a bottle of wine, so with taxes and grats, it came out to about $50 per person.

I'm heading to Abigail's Party in Kits later this week (another $28 place). I've heard nothing but good reviews about the place, so hopefully, I'm not let down.

im heading to Hapa Izakaya on Saturday. Anyone tried it and whats your opinion?

i went, too my surprise most of the customers that night were caucasians. The manager there is half caucasian and half japanese. This is more like a fusion Japanese resturant and not your authentic izakaya.

food is 7/10 and the japanese waitress there is pretty good looking :fullofwin:
I think she is a local model too

I went to Fish Shack for the $18 dollar menu. Food was not bad. The fish and chip came with one piece of salmon. The donut dessert wasn't that great. Bill came to $77 dollars for 2 people after drinks and tip.

i went, and i sat beside someone who clearly was taking a girl out on the date. The main course looked pretty good but the dessert was given to us by mistake so we had a bite. FML, those donuts were SHIT.

the place was sooo loud. the oysters for 1 buck a shuck (happy hour) would have been a great choice.

I went to Cloud 9.

My appetizer was Spinach Salad which was pretty good. Entree was the Kung Pao Prawn and Scallops which was a little spicy. The dessert was some cake that tasted like Resses Peanut Butter Cup with a scoop of ice cream. I went at 8pm and didnt get my entree until 9:15. Appetizer came quickly though.

Overall I would gave it 7/10. Decent food, nice view, but I guess the day I went it was too busy and our food took wayyyyy too long to come

friends dragged me to the boathouse in richmond today
I was pretty disappointed. Pretty shitty Service
When salads came this Asian server just tossed it on the table. Salad wasn't even mine but he just placed it in front of me =_=
Hostess was little attitudy. Our main server was so so.
Asian chick that served soup was nice though. That's the only reason why I tipped

Appy: Lobster bisque was fantastic
Main: Cedar plank sampler. One of my salmon chunks & cod came waaay too mushy.
Dessert: brownies. for some reason my brownie chunk was noticeably smaller than my friends' wtf
It's okay though I don't dessert much and I need to watch my weight anyways

overall, service really went down hill since last time I was there.
Food was meh (didn't expect much anyways). If it wasn't for my friends I wouldn't have gone/go again in the future. At least not the Richmond location :X

One reason I don't fully support DOV is the customers don't understand the flaws of a set menu. :fulloffuck:

If there are 3 entrees being offered its not like a restaurant can anticipate if one of them will sell out. They aren't going to make excess amounts, especially if they're special for the event. Then people feel entitled to be offered alternatives or compensation if something is sold out. There are alternatives! The other entrees! :rukidding:

Not to mention, everybody is going to take advantage of the set menu prices and suddenly, the restaurant staff are overwhelmed, resulting in a negative experience.

DoV is a plague.

Went to Water Street Cafe yesterday and it was alright, not too bad but nothing special. 7/10.

Had reservations for 8:15 and was seated by 8:20. The waitress was very nice and kept checking back to see if we're ok and constantly filling our glasses with water. The wait time for our food was pretty slow though, it took 30+ min from when I finished my appy till I got my main.

Appy: Fanny Bay Oysters - it was alright, there was a lot of sauce but it was very light and not a lot of taste to it

Main: Whole Fresh Atlantic Lobster with spaghetti - Same with this, it was ok, there was a lot of the "sea" taste/smell in the lobster and a lot of Tomalley too, I actually don't really like it and thought it would have been removed but according to the waitress you have to request it to be removed when ordering.

Dessert: Flourless Double Chocolate Espresso Cake - I enjoyed this the most and it was good, the cake had a very rich chocolate and espresso taste to it and it was very filling.

I walked up the street to abigails at 5:30pm for dinner, should be easy to get in for dinner, right? No, its dine out night. I totally forgot that this was going on. I just wanted a goddamn steak frites with my wife. Me and the manager had a good quick laugh about our dine out terrors, and I popped up to chewies for some non-dineout, so all is well I suppose.

Went to Yew a few days ago. The service was good, food was to my liking (not too much, not too little, taste was to my liking), meals were timed well, and the place looks very nice and classy. I was there in the late evening so I'm not sure how the service would have fared during peak meal hours, but they weren't grouchy after that period so I'm assuming they are able to hold their composure.

Oh yes, water and wine were filled on a regular basis.

Rating: I would definitely go there again.

+1

Boathouse recently lost its head chef after 25 years being with the company, if that doesn't tell you to stay away from a sinking ship (pun intended), I don't know what does.
