Pacific Rim (think of it as Godzilla vs Gundam Wing)

Okay, so maybe not precisely like Godzilla vs Gundam Wing, but it's still pretty freakin' cool (though I'm pretty sure it's going to suck hard :lol )

i don't like how they're not actually IN the suits. seems like they're remote controlled. not sure if it's worth going to theatres for this. :p

I watched this trailer a few days ago and had the same thought.
Wish they could just make a gundam wing movie like this :P

I wish they NEVER make a live action Gundam Movie based on the original series or anything from the Alternate timelines ever
although there was a live action gundam, but I never watched it..its Canadian..

I'd like to see one well made before I say they should never make one.
Imagine if pacific rim quality was made into a gundam movie.
Just like the dragon ball movie. I'm not against them making a live action but they did such a poor job.
Engless waltz is my favorite film btw :D

I really hope it's going to be good, but very unlikely
This movie is undeserving of the man who played Stringer Bell.
I'm surprised nobody has seen this movie and posted about it.
I saw this yesterday night at Metrotown, AVX 3D.
Solid movie. Good summer action flick. I would recommend it to anyone who likes big action scenes, monsters, robots, or just plain awesomeness. Don't get me wrong, the characters are way too colourful, some of the scenes are insanely cheesy. But this movie never took itself too seriously - so it fits perfectly. Sure, there are plot holes, but who cares, you have massive robots fighting massive monsters. You won't focus on the plots, don't you worry.
It's done well. It's not stupid transformers CGI where you can't make out any actual detail in the scene. It's done really well.
Worth watching in 3D, IMO.
Go and watch it.

A few of my friends have already seen it and they all have surprisingly good things to say about it.
Guess I should go see it soon.
Watched it yesterday. Pretty good. Lots of critics seem to be pleasantly surprised as well. Nothing groundbreaking but the visuals are pretty cool.
And for all the people comparing the movie to Transformers before even seeing it..it is nothing like transformers. That's a totally unfair comparison. The action sequences are shot and framed pretty nicely, compared to the mindless and unintelligible scenes in transformers.

just saw it...pretty awesome movie i must say. saw the trailers a while back and thought it looked corny but it proved me wrong haha
This movie was sooooo much better than the POS Transformer movies.
All the fight sequences are shot well, because you can actually see what is going on :lol
Watched it in 3D and was worth it.

if Pacific Rim ends up a fiasco, say goodbye to the mecha genre LOL

Its more like Neon Genesis Evangelion live action,
-robot sync in the mind to humans check
-fighting monsters that pop out of the earth n other realm check
-girl with bob cut n blue hair check
-jager/nerv program last ditch effort check
-monsters increase in strength n frequency check
probably missing some more but yah

Just saw it tonight and it was pretty good. 3D effects were done well in this movie and there was non-stop action for pretty much the entire second half of the movie.

It made 91 million it's opening weekend. Not record breaking, but this movie will do well in the box office.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking of as I left the theatre... Almost as blatantly obvious as Hunger Games = Battle Royale
They might as well purchase the copyrights instead of ripping off 99% of the concept and claiming it their "own" movie. Pretty lame.
Acting was bad and corny lines all over but Graphics were really nice though.

Definitely agree with the 3D comments. 3D was well implemented into the movie. Beautiful scenes and framing of the shots, many of them were wallpaper worthy shots.

The movie is definitely IMAX worthy with the impressive graphics but I went in with high expectations because of it's high ratings and came out disappointed about everything other than the CG.

I was expecting something meh-level at best, but wanted to see it because GDT's stuff is awesome.
And holy motherfucking fuck. I were happy. Allow me to repost what I put on facebook after I came out of the theatre:
For anyone who was on the fence as far as seeing Pacific Rim, don't be. Fucking see it. It's like Evangelion meets Godzilla with a splash of Robot Jox in a live-action OVA that's been done well.
Guillermo del Toro, you're doing it right.
The key is managing expectations. Does it have the character development that you might expect form a serious drama? No. Does it have the amazing storytelling that something from we might expect from someone like Quentin Tarantino? No.
But is it a fucking awesomely done monster movie? Fuck yes.
The world itself is constructed really well--it's believable, it's got a really good internal logic, it's well drawn out, it's believable that there's more out there than what we've seen. The acting is a common complaint by a lot of people, and for me, that's kind of what I enjoyed about the movie. They delivered their lines (some of them very cheesy), followed their stereotypes, and walked through the Monster Movie Hall really really well. When it came to the character's names, I honestly (srsly) don't remember any of them except for the chick's. Instead, I remember:
-The broken hero
-The proud general
-The rebellious son
-The anchored yet regretful father
-The Russian badasses
-The wacky scientists
and so on and so forth.
All in all, it was a fun movie, and for being a fun movie it was a good movie. Would I say it's a good movie full stop? No. Would I recommend it to my mother? No. But if you like action, or monsters, or anime, or some brainless fun...then yes.

watched it last night and LOVE IT! 3D is well worth the money for this movie. For those who havent seen it, dont go in there expecting a oscar award for best story. You kinda have to turn off your brains and just enjoy what it has to offer. like previous post stated, it is evangelion meets godzilla meets robot jox. its not so much gundam wing cuz the robots dont move like a ninja but its got a lot of action packed fighting and beautiful scenes that just makes you go "oooooohh"
Valour - i was also expecting a lot from crimson typhoon but was left disappointed. I was hoping he'd do some slice n dice martial arts move. The Russian team did show their potential. When i saw their fight scene i was hearing the song "eye of the tiger" in the back of my mind.:bigthumb:

As an aside, I'm looking forward to the Director's Cut--like the others said there's just so much potential for so much more ass-kicking awesomeness-ness. I seriously hope it gets at least another half hour of stuff that hit the cutting room floor.

Just came back from the theatres. Watched it in 3D.
Definitely worth the 3D, I imagine IMAX would be even better.
I'm not a fan of sci-fi action movies at ALL, but this movie did not disappoint.
A little bit of humour included here and there gets an 8/10 from me.

If these are the featurettes, I can't wait to see the Bluray extra features and GDT's narration. Also, I can only imagine how GDT felt while directing this movie. Listening to what and how he says it, it's like he's seen every one of these live action movies and seen what's been done wrong. He's the fan's director.
Great movie. But, fuck Mako is one ugly broad. Couldn't they find a more likeable asian girl.

Oh and why didn't they have better Melee weapons. It seems so obvious that would do way better damage than punching a monster in the face !
Scythe, Samurai Sword, Broad Sword, Battle Axe. That would've been sweet.

The part where Gipsy Danger whipped out that sword to tear apart the Kaiju. I had a "Power Rangers" moment there (punch, kick, grunt, for 20min, oh noes the episode is ending, unleash the CANNON, insta-kill) ... like :seriously: you could have taken that out WAY sooner to finish off the monster but noooo you had to be all dramatic and try to PUNCH the shit out of it first, then when you are getting your ass kicked, then take out the sword and 1-hit kill him.
But I guess that goes for a lot of these type of movies ...

way better than i thought... if you take it as a kids movie, it's a super cool kids movie lol.
it even has character development.
the most interesting was "chasing the rabbit"... falling into a memory. It's kinda like losing lucidity in a dream. falling back into the dream without realising it. forgetting you were in control.

Just got back from it in IMAX 3D, awesome movie. I had super high expectations of the effects and visuals and was not disappointed. I can't imagine any other way to see it than in IMAX 3D, if not at minimum regular 3D.
The climax had so many ideas/shots taken from Independence Day... Especially just before it happens the close up on the Kaiju's face.
Also can't believe the main dude was Lloyd from Undeclared.
Also Charlie Day :fullofwin:

that actually made sense to me because think about it this way..
a cook pounds the meat first to tenderize and soften it before cutting and cooking it. Thats exactly what they did. Pound the living crap out of the Kaijus, slice and dice em, and cook em with their rockets/lasers/cannons.
This movie did it right! oscar nominee please!

Only problem with that logic is that during the last fight Gipsy Danger sliced through that one Kaiju without really fighting it. Wish there was a scene that showed that the Kaijus had armour or a shell that swords couldn't pierce and the Jagers had to rip off.
If a sequel ever gets made I want a fight scene in the sky, since we already know that Kaijus have flight capabilities. Slap a jetpack on that bitch, Gundam style!
