: What won't you eat and why?

Graeme, darthchilli and I were talking about bluefin and eating endangered animals so I thought I should ask the same question of RS.

Is there anything you won't eat? For what reason?

We brought up several examples.

Blue fin is endangered but delicious so yep, I'd still eat it.

People think eating live octopus is cruel but it's awesome and interesting so yep, I'd still eat it.

I draw the line at genitalia and stuff that was/is poop like that wacky coffee but if someone made me roast baby whooping crane tomorrow, I'd nom nom the heck out of that thing.

Not anything endangered or unethical, but I absolutely will not eat bananas.
Just not a fan of the smell, the texture, the taste, and the fact that I can always hear the wet mushy noise it makes when it is being chewed up ...especially when i'm sitting in a lecture and the person beside me whips one out and goes to town with it. Seems to happen all the time and it drives me insane. :fuuuuu:

Nothing morally holds me back. I'm ok to eat anything, except humans lol. However, I am quite picky, and I wish I wasn't so easily turned off just by the texture, or cooking conditions. The list would be long. The majority being found in the Asian cuisine.

In short, I might be hesitant to eat something in someones house, but, I'll have no problem eating it at a restaurant (although I even know that chances are its more 'cleaner' to eat it from a friends home).

Peanut Butter. Can't even stand the smell of it. I'll make sure I wipe the knife clean before putting butter on my toast if there is left over peanut butter on it.

I do like peanuts and have no allergies however...

I actually don't eat veggies. My mom gave up on trying to make me ages ago after her trying for some years.

I hate the taste + texture. I do however have no issues with it if it's a soup since the veggies have been boiled taking away that texture and the taste is gone. I'm also not so anal that I will sit there and pick out every last little bit like in a fried rice for example. That's small enough and will just blend into the rice so I'll just eat it. The only hand full of veggies I eat straight up aren't even really veggies such as mushrooms, corn, potato, and onions.

Otherwise I'm totally game to eat anything usually.

just the ones i can remember atm:

peas, avocado, egg yolks, beets, liver, raw onions

no specific reason for any of the above... most have to do with texture/taste though

Admirable notion, but misguided in practice.

A four and nine month old calf are slaughtered under the same practices, and equally humane/inhumane in terms of 'pain.'

Animals are food. If they don't like it, they should stop being delicious.

I'm actually going to be writing a piece on not eating shark fin but not for the reasons most people choose. I can get on board with it because, having eaten a couple hundred bowls of the stuff in my lifetime, the actual shark fin doesn't add much to the dish.

Fois gras, on the other hand, is awesome in every way and I would help fight anything that considers banning it.

Hate pork, everything about it. Probably due to the fact that i got really bad food poising when i was little because of ham.

Fatty meats, i mean the actual FAT..i can eat it if i trim but for example i just cant stand the pho broths where they use animal fat.

I buy most of my meat from Hopcott organic meats and i try to stay away from mcdicks but ill eat it if i have too. I just have a weird feeling towards the thought of any pain caused to an animal so even when im eating meat i sometimes feel like ass.

For inards, it all depends on how its cooked if its roasted like the Turkish street food Kokoreç then its fine but if its steamed or boiled i cant do it.

This is Kokoreç BTW,

http://foodieinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/8187652863_18c44f56d7_c.jpg

and i LOVE sausage especially with cheese, wine and a sharp mustard but i usually go for the sausages with artificial casings, again i try to have beef/chicken/turkey sausages.

I'm not too picky but i find that if you don't enjoy what your eating, you shouldn't be eating it. That being said, obviously if i was homeless i would eat anything but i'm not so might as well be grateful and indulge in anything i like.

I'm pretty sure hundreds of years in the future we will all be vegetarians.
We'd go extinct before that happens. Theoretically, the planet would be destroyed as well before that would even happen.

As for the OP, there are some things I won't eat out of principle or whatever... dogs and cats, although I have nothing against others doing so. Shark fin, and it's the same except I would point out that it is pretty horrible to eat it, and worst of all, pointless.

As for personal taste, just about anything goes. I'll try everything at least once, and then decide if I like it or not. As it turns out, I like pretty much everything :D

But not liver. Heart, intestine, lungs, spleen, kidney, stomach, love it all. Go to the 'ngau jap' stands all the time, but we always have to ask for no liver... ugh

And there are some things I prefer not to eat.. I don't really like drinking soup.. a little bit is OK, but I don't like being stuffed full with hot soup. When I order noodles, it's usually only 'stirred noodles' or 'lo mein' with the soup on the side.

That's about it... now you know not to get me liver soup! :D

Haven't tried really good fois gras. I haven't liked any of the liver I've tried before though, whether it's beef, pork, liver sausage.. I just don't like that texture or flavour.

One of my absolute favourite foods is goose intestines in hot pot... when it's really fresh, it has that crunchy texture, and is surrounded by all that fatty tissue that half-melts when you cook it in hot pot :sweetjesus:

Also no dogs/cats. Hate people who eat them. Back home in Vietnam, thieves stealing pets from families and selling it to those shops. Your dog could be running in your yard and somebody would lure it out and drug it, then it's game over. Totally fucked up....

Anyways, durian is an acquired taste. Most people hate it the first time. I did. I felt like throwing up. But if you eat enough of it, you're most likely hooked for life. Especially fresh durian.:sweetjesus:

there's nothing really that comes to mind that i detest, i find that alot of people who dont like sushi or are scared to try new things always bring up things like octopus or straight roe etc saying how nasty it is but in reality there isnt much [that ive found anyways] in Japanese food that has a very strong or very unique taste to it and i've ate everything under the sun

i'm not too big on organ meats or tripe though

Organ meats are a no-go for me, tried liver a long time ago, think it was beef liver. Hated the texture and flavour, spit it out right away. Childhood moment scarred me for life, now I can't stand the sight of that stuff haha. Also, I don't like fish, for some odd reason. Only time I'll ever eat it is in sashimi (salmon only LOL) and deep fried from Pajo's.

Also, chicken feet. Yeck. I know some people love it, I just.. can't.

the only thing i wont eat probably is most bugs. like some of them like grasshoppers and smaller insects are fine but probably wouldnt eat like a cockroach, larvae or a centipede.

ive had pretty much a wide variety of strange foods. cod sperm sacks, turtle meat, horse, live fugu, chicken testicles, raw chicken heart, liver, kidneys, skin and meat etc. nothing really surprises me.

i really want to try balut as well but most of my friends don't want to try it with me :okay: and in korea, i plan to try sanakji (fresh live octopus), dog, live mudfish/loach hotpot, fermented stingray and pretty much anything that's weird.

i just hate eating yellow/green/red peppers. those things piss me off. oh and bittermelon. fuck bittermelon to the depths of hell.

- peanut butter
- okra
- sweet potatoes & yams
- natto (fermented soybeans) a Japanese "delicacy"
- mussels & oysters
- escargot
- cilantro

Haven't tried really good fois gras. I haven't liked any of the liver I've tried before though, whether it's beef, pork, liver sausage.. I just don't like that texture or flavour.

One of my absolute favourite foods is goose intestines in hot pot... when it's really fresh, it has that crunchy texture, and is surrounded by all that fatty tissue that half-melts when you cook it in hot pot :sweetjesus:

Foie Gras is AMAZING!

Also fucking goose intestine is so friggen good, they have really fresh shit in Asia none in Vancouver.

I was in Fong Wing Kee in Hong Kong not too long ago... so damn good. Their satay for their hotpot soup is fucking amazing as well.

Buy the organic stuff. I don't recall the name of the fruit stand, but wife bought some strawberries in Steveston/Richmond area and they were fucking fabulous. They only sell them when they're in season though.

Kimchi

Can't handle the smell of it, it's so bad I smell it when people had it an hour ago or were around people that did. I also don't go into Korean Restaurants voluntarily. I come out borderline racist but whatever.

They have an amazing strawberry, raspberry, blueberry custard pie every summer! I buy 2-3 everytime I'm there in August. It's so damn good! I'll have to snap a few photos of it this year hah.

I don't like eating barszcz (Polish red beat soup aka borscht) kind of a popular soup in some European countries. My mother makes it a few times a year, especially during the Christmas holidays and I pass everytime I'm offered. I don't know why, i just don't like it. So I make myself tomato soup instead with lots of veggies and rice along with a very large plate of pierogis :)

I'm probably going to be failed for this..but strawberries. OMG, everything about it is just disgusting to me!!! The taste, the little seeds..the LOOK..LOL!! I remember going to birthday parties and passing on cake as a child if I saw strawberries on or in it. To this day I still avoid it like the plague.

I won't eat bugs.

these days strawberries just don't taste the same as when we were kids (at least ones from the larger supermarkets).

That's because most of the Strawberries in the store are shipped up from the states, where they were picked green before the sugars have a chance to develop. I agree they taste like shit, and I don't like them either.

But come June-July when the local strawberries ripen and go on sale, :sweetjesus: so fucking good like eating candy. I stopped at the local farm twice a week on my drive home from work to get them.

Tomatoes are the same way, they fucking pick them green so they taste like crap. It's why I like growing my own in the summer, properly vine ripened tomatoes taste sweet.

+1 on cantaloupe/honeydew and also add papaya to the mix. The texture and also the fact its only semi-sweet is kinda meh.

Also the shitty out of season farmed raw tomatoes. Barely any flavour just watery gelatinous tomato-flavoured water.

Just as an FYI, strawberries do not ripen once picked - they are picked just before optimum ripeness but after they've reddened. That's why US strawberries are not as sweet as the local variety. Also, I suspect the US variety that we get here have been bred for maximum yield, and not taste.

This is also the case with many varieties of the tomatoes we get in supermarkets. They have been bred for maximum yield and not much attention has been paid to taste and (with tomatoes) colour. BC Hothouse tomatoes that have been ripened on the vine are the best alternative to growing your own.

If you ever get the chance, try fresh Japanese strawberries... Believe me I know how good the local BC strawberries are, but the ones they grow in Japan are HUGE and juicy and sweet as fuck. Really expensive though...

The best strawberries I ever had were wild strawberries in Poland.

Tiny little things, but the most intense strawberry flavour you'll ever taste, and sweet too. Even better when they're made into a dessert perogi filling.

I'll chime in ...

There isn't much I don't eat ... I'll eat ANYTHING ... and to a point, I have already devoured many weird things in my lifetime. I'll try anything once. (don't ask, you will be horrified)

What I really don't like and probably will never like:
Bitter Melon - I try to eat this once every year to see if I can "acquire" a taste for them since everyone always tells me it's good for me, and it is delicious if you like it, blah blah blah ... been 30 years running and ... nope.
Pumpkin - Can't stand the sickly sweet yet funky pungent taste. Hard to describe, but ya this one's a write-off.

Stuff I used to hate but now don't mind:
Chinese Mushrooms
Durian
Okra

MUSHROOMS, oysters.. and anything that comes close to an expiry date...

its not the taste of mushrooms that gets me, just how they are grown.. Oysters can taste great, but again, the texture and knowing what it is bothers me... and i have my own place so i eat out alot, i tend not to trust leftovers or anything close to expiry lol

needless to say i waste alot of money on food...
