He did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit right before he went up to the ISS. It's actually pretty amazing, reading some of his responses. He comes off as a very, VERY intelligent man - strong leader - just the type of person you would want commanding the ISS.

I read some pretty funny responses to his comments though.

Somebody asked him this,

Did spaceflight change religious view?

No one gets to be an astronaut without a strong personal conviction that gives them strength and confidence. No matter what religion or creed they believe in, all astronauts have something fundamental within themselves that they can draw upon. The actual experience of space travel in fact deepens this, reinforces it, and accentuates the awe and wonder that are at the base of it.

Then somebody else asked him this,

Being from Sarnia do you cheer for the Leafs, the Red Wings, or someone else?

The Leafs.

Then somebody else commented

The Leafs

This is the strong personal conviction he was talking about. Lesser humans would crumble and move on.

For those interested in reading the AMA, here is the link

I Am Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Commander of Expedition 35. : IAmA (http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/14schr/i_am_astronaut_chris_hadfield_commander_of/)

One of my favorite answers of his:

If you could bring one famous person into space with you, who would it be?

One non-famous person?

[–]ColChrisHadfield[S] 379 points 24 days ago

Assuming I already had a competent crew, so that I wasn't counting on this person to operate the vehicle and keep us alive, I would bring an extremely talented artist. One who could capture the experience in a way it had never been captured before.

That may be a songwriter (such as Stan Rogers, if he were still alive) who could put a profession -- a way of life -- into perspective.

I thought that was a really well thought out answer. He actually recorded a song for Christmas, live on the ISS, and posted it on youtube and songcloud.

Dude became the first Canadian ISS commander today. He just continues to awesome harder.

MONTREAL — The Queen and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have sent out congratulations to Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield who is now commander of the International Space Station.

It’s the first time in the history of the space station that a Canadian has assumed control of the giant orbiting space laboratory.

A small change-of-command ceremony that included the playing of “O Canada” took place on Wednesday as the other five astronauts on board gathered around Hadfield.

NASA astronaut Kevin Ford, the outgoing commander, surprised Hadfield when he played the Canadian national anthem over a speaker.

The 53-year-old space veteran also thanked Ford for giving him “the keys to the family car.”

“We’re gonna put some miles on it, but we’ll bring it back in good shape,” Hadfield said.

The transfer of command is the start of what’s officially designated “Expedition 35.”

Rookie Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques said the top job in outer space doesn’t come easy, adding that it’s the highest accolade that an astronaut can receive.

“To be named commander requires an astronaut to have previous flight experience and this is Chris’ third mission,” he said from Houston. “It’s a little bit like a gold medal.”

Former astronaut Marc Garneau, who announced Wednesday that he was quitting the federal Liberal leadership race, said he couldn’t think of a better-suited Canadian for the task.

“Certainly in the last few months, he’s achieved rock star super status,” the Liberal MP said from Ottawa.

Garneau, the first Canadian to fly in space in 1984, also visited the space station in November 2000.

“Geez, I wish Twitter had existed when I flew on my last mission, it might have a different outcome today,” he joked.

Since Hadfield’s arrival at the space station on Dec. 21, 2012, he has gained over 500,000 Twitter followers thanks to the spectacular photos of the world that he has been posting.

During the transfer of command high above the Earth, a member of the ground crew relayed congratulations to Hadfield and also passed along best wishes from the Queen.

In a message on the British Monarchy’s official website, the Queen said she was pleased to transmit her personal best wishes “and those of all Canadians” to Hadfield.

“Our thoughts and best wishes are with him and the entire crew, as are our prayers for an eventual safe return to family, friends and fellow Canadians,” she said.

The prime minister also lauded Hadfield on Wednesday, saying ever since the country was founded “Canadians have been pushing the boundaries of exploration and discovery, contributing in substantial ways to collective global knowledge.”

Harper said that by being named the first Canadian to take charge of the space station, Hadfield “is continuing in that fine tradition of pushing the limits.”

Aside from Hadfield, the only other space station commander who wasn’t either American or Russian was Frank De Winne of Belgium.

Hadfield is into the third month of his five-month space station visit, which ends in mid-May.

It's a great article, but I think they missed on one point: the pics from space are fucking amazing, to be sure, but it was really that Shatner tweet and subsequent tweets with other celebs that REALLY set things off - those are what first got him the massive *mainstream* media coverage.

CHRIS HADFIELD SINGS SPACE ODDITY IN SPACE!

“Hallo Spaceboy...”

Commander Chris Hadfield, currently on board the International Space Station, has just tweeted his version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity.

Here’s what his Tweet said:

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + -

A revised version of David Bowie's Space Oddity, recorded by Commander Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station.
With thanks to Emm Gryner, Joe Corcoran, Andrew Tidby and Evan Hadfield for all their hard work.

+ - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + -

It’s possibly the most poignant version of the song ever created and you may recognise the name of one of those involved in its creation.

We’re talking about Chris's fellow Canadian, the lovely Emm Gryner, who was a part of the Bowie live band in 1999/2000. Here’s what she said on her blog (May 12, 2013: Space Oddity in Space | EMMBASSY (http://smarturl.it/EmmBlog)) regarding her involvement:

“The task was in front of me. I came up with a piano part. i then enlisted my friend, producer and fellow Canadian Joe Corcoran to take my piano idea and Chris' vocal and blow it up into a fully produced song. Drums! mellotrons! fuzz bass! We also incorporated into the track ambient space station noises which Chris had put on his Soundcloud. I was mostly blown away by how pure and earnest Chris' singing is on this track. Like weightlessness and his voice agreed to agree.
And voila! And astronaut sings Space Oddity in space! I was so honoured to be asked to be a part of this. You wouldn't get too many chances to make a recording like this and not only that, to make music with someone who - through his vibrant communications with kids in schools to his breathtaking photos to his always patient and good-humoured demeanour - has done more for science and space than anyone else this generation. Planet earth IS blue, and there's nothing left for Chris Hadfield to do. Right. Safe travels home Commander! ”

You can view the breathtaking video and hear Chris's beautiful rendition here on YouTube: Space Oddity - YouTube (http://smarturl.it/ChrisHadfieldSO)

I imagine he would end up in a prominent PR position with NASA/CSA where he can continue to act as a liaison between us regular folk and the rocket scientists conducting missions/experiments. He has a knack for it so would make an ideal fit.

Then again, with his credentials there's no telling where he might end up.

did a bit of reading on Chris Hadfield today. Man, that guy has an amazing bio. He's a crazy good pilot, going to top gun and winning the trophy that Tom Cruise couldn't.

Hadfield's distinguished career as a pilot began with 3 years flying CF-18s with Canadian Forces 425 Squadron in Québec. In 1985, he was the first CF-18 pilot to intercept a Soviet "Bear" aircraft in Canadian airspace. He next attended the US Air Force's test pilot ("top gun") school in California, where he was honoured as the best graduate of 1988. The following year, he became a Canadian exchange officer at the US Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Maryland - a famous breeding ground for US astronauts. His highly risky work pushing high-performance aircraft out of control and finding ways to recover them earned him the US Navy's test pilot of the year award in 1991.

KAZAKHSTAN – After five months in space, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield was shocked to discover his cell phone provider has charged him well over a million dollars for data usage and roaming charges while he was in space.
“This is ridiculous,” said the 53 year-old who recently commanded the International Space Station and a proud owner of an iPhone 5. “I only Instagrammed a few hundred pictures of the sun coming up over the Sahara Desert and a thunderstorm over the Pacific Ocean, posted my videos of me eating in space a few dozen times on Twitter and watched a few YouTube videos of goats that sound like humans and that’s it!”

When asked why he didn’t buy a better data plan, Hadfield responded “I didn’t want to pay for an additional $20 a month rip-off when I’m orbiting the earth in 90 minutes.”

“My parents are going to kill me!” he added.

I really wonder what kind of pension he has or how he gets paid when he was in the space station. That would be a whole lot of OT lol

I wonder if he will consider running for PM, I really hope so since we could use someone like him.

^ while all signs point to him being a good candidate, I will reserve my opinion till the poignant questions are asked and he has a chance to answer, should he ever run for Prime Minister

Hadfield has been promoting his book lately, and made a few appearances. Including an AWESOME podcast with Joe Rogan. Even if you don't normally listen to JRE, you definitely need to check this out.

Also he was on Conan which is hilarious as always

Chris Hadfield is miles above Joe Rogan. When Rogan started talking about aliens and talking down on people for having an interest or belief, you can see Hadfield not agreeing with him. Hadfield had to take a pause before responding to those comments. Hadfield genuinely has an interest in bettering the human species without being arrogant or forceful about it.

Great to hear him speak, though I'm sure it would have been a better interview had it not been Joe Rogan.

Hadfield has been doing the rounds in town here - was on the Bill Good Show Friday afternoon (find it on their Audio Vault or here on Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/cknwnewstalk980/bill-good-show-fri-nov-15-1)), then CBC Radio 1's Early Edition this morning, did a signing session the other day at Science World, etc. etc.

Edit: Listening to it now, Chris taking questions from callers... dude is just so unbelievable grounded for someone who spent months in space. Could listen to this guy talk all day.

Just came across this interview with Strombo... just fantastic. Two guys I could watch all day just chatting it up. So much deeper than your average late-night talk show.
