The provincial government has announced the new BC Services card will replace the Carecard, starting February 15th.

Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says over the next five years, eligible British Columbians between 19 and 74 must replace the old Carecard.
"So you can get a combined BC Services Card which is your CardCard and your Driver's Licence or you can get a separate Services Card. Either way, if you want to this new Services card you can get it wherever Driver's Licences can be renewed".
She says features have been put in place to make sure only the appropriate government department can access your information.

The five year replacement program will cost 150-million dollars.
The BC Civil Liberties Association has concerns about the card, and says the government has refused to give out any details about the "architecture" of the new system.

The new card will include a photograph, anti-forgery features, a five-year expiry date and other measures to ensure it remains a secure piece of identification.

Despite concerns from privacy advocates, the BC Services Card will also be combined with a driver’s licence.

Most residents will get their new card as they renew their licence, while non-drivers and children will also enrol at locations where driver’s licences are issued.

meh i only wish these ID cards didnt look so formal i preferred the styling of our old DL and care

it's not as if these new pieces of ID are more secure since the news was just speaking of the growing problem of fake ids that teens are using and can gain access to very easily; they look like the real thing

How about the enhanced drivers license to cross the border so you don't have to use a passport when driving into the states? Is that still available?

yes, and that's why they are giving 5 years to switch over. Anyone up until today who has gotten a new card will need a new one in 5 years regardless.

Fuck that.. not getting this until 2017.. JUST renewed my DL at the end of 2012.

I bet to renew your DL is going to cost a shit ton more now too every 5 years. Bet it will go from $75/5-years to like $150/5-years because it has "2 purposes."

seems like a good idea. i assume having your picture on your care card would cut down on fraudulent actions or identity left?

I can't see any information on if this will be integrated into the B.C. Enhanced Drivers Licence. I'm certain it will be, but I can't find any information explicitly stating so.

Mine is in like 8 pieces and has been for yearrssss lol. I always forget it when I need it too, since I don't regularly carry it.

Combined into 1 card will be nice.

$150million to combine 2 cards into one. I wish they could incorporate that cash grab boat license and save on more card into it too.

so the DL, care card, and enhanced ID (for crossing the border) can be combined? or just the regular DL and care card?

I think its a great idea. The reason why is you now have your photo ID on you to receive medial attention. There are a lot of people for out of country that take advantage of our medical system by using relatives and friends medical. Now they won't be able to do it as easily and I think it's brilliant.

for a long time now you've had to show your id and care card @ hospitals etc
this was the natural next step but people will always complain about unnecessary spending especially when there are services that are short on cash

The gov't needs to learn the difference between WANTS and NEEDS. do BC'ers really NEED a new care card? Why not just have them take their BCDL or other ID when going to the doctor to prevent fraud?!
Most if not all of carry our BCDL / BCID with us everywhere we go. I wouldn't mind these fancy changes if the provincial budget had wiggle room.

Or you can think about it the other way; most people carry their carecard with them. Most. But not all.

So if you get in an accident and get taken to a hospital but aren't carrying your carecard, it takes more time for them to get your workup. But if it's all in a single card, you end up never worrying about forgetting either one. Or rather, you have more incentive to carry both.
