Okay so apparently Mitsubishi made an 8 speed manual transmission before.
The way it works is kind of like bicycle. You can shift 1st to 4th gear and also get to pick the secondary gear, which is "economy" and "power".
Mitsubishi called it "4x2 Supershift"
Also the reverse had 2 gears...so it's actually 10 speed if you count the reverse.

Neato, Dude!
From wikipedia:
In practice, it was very difficult to use all 8 forward speeds in sequence as every second change required movement of both gear levers at the same time - something which was almost impossible without using both hands. Many owners settled on using the transmission in low 'Power' mode the majority of the time, and only using the secondary selector to select high 'Economy' mode when in 4th gear, effectively creating a 5th gear from 4th 'high'.

This reminds me of the 4lo and 4hi settings in a 4x4, except that u have to keep switching out of each mode to make it feel like it has more gears

It should, because it's exactly the same thing.
I thought the hi and lo refers to the transfer case..

Really quite pointless to have eight gears on a car like that, just adds pointless gears and even more pointless manufacturing costs to the blend.
I hope it never makes a re-appearance.

It's basically split shifting but without the button on the gear knob.

Manual split shifter. A lot of those were behind 2 stroke diesels. A bit hard to learn and if you bound up while shifting, you had to crawl underneath to straighten out the linkage.

then my car would be 7 speed then.
