Take the hard drive out and put it in a new casing. Not worth fixing the old casing.
Here's one for $7: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=42781&vpn=NST%2D210S2%2DBK&manufacture=Vantec&promoid=1338

but I have all my assignments in there =/
the new casing is just that - a casing. Your hard drive will function just the same. You're not wiping any information.

If you put the HDD into a new housing, you don't actually lose the contents of the HDD. Meaning your assignments will still be there. Make sure you buy the appropriate housing size depending on your portable harddrive, 3.5'' or 2.5''.

I plucked it out of the hard drive case. I try prying the bottom, but it looks like it's glued onto something

You need to unscrew the outer metal bracket in order to free the hard drive. From the picture, you can see two screws on left left side of the picture. Also unscrew the two on the right.
After you have freed up the harddrive you can either buy a harddrive enclosure at a place like NCIX. Or you can plug the harddrive into your desktop computer if you have one via sata cable and power cable.
It should look like this after you have removed the bracket:

^dropbox. Sign up with your school email + download it on your iphone/android/ipad/etc. to get additional space. I have about ~20gb all for free!

it doesn't require a power source outside of the usb? my WD portable HDD's mini usb broke, and I ended up getting a new replacement board with USB from ebay for 20 bucks
This would have been much better

48gb is from my Galaxy S3 promo, but I will still have over 25GB left when that expires in 2014. And I'm sure I can do other things to increase the space by then. :concentrate:

No, 2.5" drives (such as the Seagate Momentus pictured in the original) do not need extra power. USB power is enough. Also, why buy a new USB board when a new case (with the same functionality) is $7?

I never knew something like that existed... Not even sure if that would work for my HDD.

The 2.5'' cases usually come with a board with usb port. So you basically bought the inside component and reused the original case, whereas kiwee just bought a new case and inside component.

Then it's a 3.5" drive. The cases for those are still around $15-20, and includes a power source. Still cheaper than buying a replacement USB board and less hassle.
