Was looking at trying to make some beats, more just for fun and for one of my friends to record with. Wondering if anyone's got some good starting programs they could recommend me? only thing I've really heard of is FL studio but apparently people aren't really using that anymore...... and have moved onto something else.

i use Ableton Live, it has everything you will ever need to make a track.

Reason is also good, however the reason i don't use it is because you can only use built in VST's made by reason, and only import VST's made by reason, I'm not sure if they changed this over the past few years but this definitely was the case back a while ago. Don't let this deter you however because a lot of early tracks Produced by Eminem/D12, and a bunch of other hip hop producers used Reason.

Logic is good for Mac's.

FL is good to play around with, but it won't help you what so ever when it comes to releasing, rendering or equalizing tracks (production). Think of it as like the Fisher Price piano of the digital music production industry.

and I have seen people make magic with FL. however when it comes to production it fails at every corner, FL is and always has been a toy.

Is ReBirth still around? It was an emulator for the old school Roland drum machines (303, 808, 909)... These were all analog, so you programmed with with buttons and knobs :)

Spent so many hours in the late 90's playing with that thing... Wish I would have kept some of those (well kind of) :tears:

I remember those, you would keep your sounds or synths on floppy discs and then you can mess around with them.

There's a famous producer/dj still uses them to make music, i can't remember what his dj handle was but it had the name Roland in it. I remember amongst his career peak there was a hoax that he started going around in the audiophile community that someone stole his Rolands and his floppy's and were holding them ransom. lol. everyone took it so seriously.

FL Studio is underrated tbh I use it myself and you have no idea how many big names use it as their main daw. As Armin says it's not what program you use but the person behind it.
