I recently judt purchased it used and it seems to alert me of a speedtrap when I am 20-50 feet away in the city. Does not seem to pick up anything kms away in the city. Is it different on the highway? The only bands picking up seem to be 'K' band only in city when there are the school zone traps. Ive disabled X band so obly K and Ka POP and LSR are on.

For city use that sounds right. Very little warning in urban settings because of line of sight issue.

When on highway it is much better. However RCMP likes to use laser nowadays so jammers are more useful. :-(

If you are having issues with it or any concerns, you can give escort a call, to get a service number, and have it sent down to get it service.

I haven't used mine for awhile in the city, as most of mine was for highway use. I did end up having an issue and sent it down, paid $50 for a service and it was good as new. They even replaced the suction mount, front lens, and more.

Most cops uses laser these days that you won't detect till it hits you. Also most of the regular radar guns are instant on off so you won't detect it till they use it.

Ah okay, how long did it take you to send it down, shipping cost, time they took to fix and send it back? Im not entireky sure if there are problems. The past few days ive been wanting to test it out but havnt spotted a darn cop on highway and the only time I did, the suv drove by in city and it didnt go off so I guess it doesnt work unless they have radar on right?

Jammers are illegal in BC, Tickets for them are huge afaik. If you have a detector and get caught, The chances are very good the ticket for speeding is cheaper than the cost of the jammer (having it confiscated) and the ticket for possesing one.

kinda off topic, what's the difference between jammer and shifter?

Because Escort ZR-4 is a shifter...

Laser & shifters are the same thing, just different marketing.
My x50 works great, I have K & X band disabled because they are useless. I get accurate KA alerts for example, one night driving east bound into Surrey over the new Portman bridge, cop was sitting in the middle of the bridge radaring and I was alerted way before the beginning of the bridge.
I've been hit with laser once, and it has alerted however its a one shot game over thing basically telling you that your about to get a ticket.
For full protection you'll need a jammer/shifter system, The ZR-4 system is outdated against the new lidar/laser guns so look into a Laser interceptor/Blinder system. It's not cheap but if you consider a speeding ticket+impound it pays off.

Incorrect. Laser 'Jammers' are NOT illegal in BC...only in the eastern provinces from Sask. and on. They are legal to sell, legal to re-sell, legal to use as well. That said, each cop has their own agenda on these things so some may be a little more interested in giving you a ticket than others. Also, if you are an asshole, they will try to throw the book at you (this goes without saying). In a court of law fortunately, cops do NOT have a leg to stand on if you use one of these things! Sadly, you will have to go to court (worst case scenario) to find this out. The absolute worst I have ever heard in a jammer case is that they ask you to remove it. They cannot confiscate it!

Also having your car seized and storage cost

EXTREMELY rare cases that this would happen in BC. In fact, I have never heard of this happening here. Just a lot of hassling, idiotic tickets and whatnot.

Like 'kidz' sais, its marketing. 'Shifter' sounds a little less invasive than 'Jammer' so its a little easier to market.

Not really racist!

Again, this is from an individual officer and does not represent the majority. Truth is, because the 'jammers' and 'shifters' in question are not only readily available but they are also legal to buy and sell. Until they are banned outright (like in other provinces) then they can and will be used in BC.

We had a customer about a year ago get pulled over by a cop in Richmond. After some brief investigation, the cop found the Escort Laser shifter in my customer's vehicle. My customer was given over $600 in fines. One was speed related and one was for obstruction of justice. The others were related to other moving violations (such as red light running, driving dangerously and basically being a tool). He was a 100% asshole and ran his mouth the entire time the cop was there.

After eventually going to court, he was charged with ALL of the offences EXCEPT the obstruction of justice charge. The judge threw that out because of lack of evidence regarding intent of use. This has been repeated over and over again in cases that I have heard of and researched. It is a grey area and of course all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt as there is still the opinion of each officer that is the start, but most certainly not the end of all charges relating to these instances.

The point is, even if you own a jammer, if you are a dick, you will be treated as such and in my opinion, you should be charged. At the end of the day, its your lawyer's word against the cop.

Absolutely.
The cop was tailing him...therefore accurately measuring his speed with a little thing called a speedometer.

So its a big grey area as to if its illegal or not? I understand that its up to the cops discretion when he decides what action to take but in terms of disputing it in court, does it hold any value? Like I understand if get caught I'll get hassled, but if I tough it out and dispute it is there a case on me?

Contemplating turning off K too since I only run into K on driving cop cars in the states. Mostly Laser and KA now. Laser is being used nearly everywhere in the Lower Mainland now.

Thats pretty much it.
When you think about it, doing a write-up on these things as a Police Officer, you would pretty much want to scare the general public and disuade them from buying these products as it does tend to make it tougher for them to do their jobs. So yes, it makes sense for a cop to make us all think that way.

At the end of all of it, the judge knows that these things are legal to buy, sell and use so you would have an excellent case. Remember though, this is my opinion based on some experience. If any of you hold this as gospel, well, its not mine or Revscene's responsibility!!!!

FYI if this is anything like the passport then when it warns you of a speedtrap it doesn't mean it DETECTS a speedtrap, there is just a previously marked location there that cops usually camp out at so it's letting you know.

also i found K band is around 50/50 on whether it's a false positive or not, but Ka is 100% when it comes to detecting police in the vicinity.

I had a company discount with FedEx at the time, so it was like next day delivery for $20. It took them maybe a week or two to service it. They shipped it back via USPS, which took another few weeks. So maybe it took a month? This was a couple years ago, so I can't really remember.

The reason I sent mine is for service was due to random K (or was it Ka) band full alerts popping up, when there was nothing nearby. They ended up resolving the issue. If you don't think that there is anything wrong with your unit, you can still send it in as a tune-up http://www.escortradar.com/tuneup/ It seems the price has increased though.

The 8500X50 does not have the GPS function. You are thinking about the more expensive ones with GPS capability... 9500i, 9500xi, etc.

Ka is 100% radar gun, K can be a door opener or motion sensor but you can usually tell.

What's annoying is that a lot of cars with blind spot sensors and radar cruise control now set off the radar detectors.

I had an x50, and it was pretty good for the money.
Some crackhead stole it one night, so I upgraded to a 9500ix. It's so much better, but it's also a lot more money.

Honestly, if the crackhead hadn't robbed my shit that night, I'd still be happy using the x50. If you can find a used one for less than $150, go for it.

get yourself a 9500xi at bare miniumum

i have a 9500ci in my car so it jam laser. with just the 9500xi you will block out a lot of false signals but sometimes its too late. regardless both ci and xi are well worth the purchase price

When you get one, In the city K band and X band are 99% nothing and if you get hit with a Ka band or a Laser, Slam on the brakes. Ka is ALWAYS Radar, And laser sort of speaks for itself.

I disagree with this.
The first week I blocked out a bunch of false signals, and haven't heard them since. I've had my 9500 for 2 years now too, so if it was going to fuck up, it would have already.

I saved my self $400+ by turning of K & X band on my x50 which are the only false alerts you would receive here.

I have the 9500ix also and the GPS works great. It blocks out the false signals and if it reads the same false signal 3 times it stores it.

In White Rock, they install a X band radar that displays your speed and after driving by it 3 times, it stored it. It also notifies me when there is a red light or speed cameras in intersections.

I have used many detectors and the 9500ix is one of the best.

As much as I'd like to turn off K band. Theres still a few times in the past that I've been blasted with IO K band by Richmond RCMP along Russ Baker way. K band is very real but very seldom used...Also american cops love to shoot K while driving along I5. But yes I agree, for the most part K is useless in BC.
