UBCSCC is holding the last 2 of their winter Slush Series events on Sun, Feb 24 and Sun, March 10. Both events are held at the BC Driving Center / Justice Institute driving pad at the Pitt Meadows airport.
VCMC will likely start their season off in April. Traditionally, they will also hold a driver clinic called the Velocity Driving School early in the season (think April / May-ish), and sometimes offer the course again later in the season. Last year, Velocity was $175, but as every participant will tell you, it is one smoking bargain. UBCSCC also holds an AutoX 101 driving school, but that one tends to come in the Sept/Oct time frame.
Between the 2 clubs, VCMC is the more serious / hardcore group, while UBCSCC has a more laid back flavour to it. But there is a lot of overlap between the members, and you'll repeatedly see some the same people at events held by both groups.

Would love to see more people getting into the autocross scene. It's fun & relatively affordable....still. Unless you are really up there playing with the top guns trying hard to win something at SCCA National in Packwood
Please do make sure your exhaust is relatively quiet & try not to cause excessive wheel spin(tire noise) though in case you don't know, coz noise is a pretty sensitive thing at BC Driving Centre @ Pitt Meadows right now. So we really need to respect the neighbors around. Big power, loud exhaust & excessive wheel spin doesn't always equals to quicker run anyway...
went for my first autox event with ubcscc at slush 5, would HAVE to do it agian for sure!

if with ubcscc, youll go through a course walk, then have a metting with all the other new people (assuming you're new), theyll let you know if you're going first, on break, or working the course

For the novices attending local autox events, when you check in with the club volunteer in the morning, as long as you tell the club volunteer that you are a novice and would like to get some assistance from senior drivers, both VCMC and UBCSCC will almost certainly go out of their way to try and find you a veteran to show you the ropes, be it analyzing the course during the morning course walk, having a senior driver sit in your run and help critic your drive, or to sit in some of the senior driver's car to see how it is done. Don't be afraid to ask.

Agreed with what Traum said...getting a senior driver to show you around. Get a ride in his car and get the senior to ride with you, point you through the sea of cone will help quite a bit
other suggestion would be clearing out the stuff in your car, doesn't matte rin the cabin or in your trunk....all loose object should be removed. Floor mats(carpet/all weather mats) should be removed doesn't matter they're hooked on or not. Bring enough clothes, a pair of spare shoes & socks, rain jacket/umbrella if it's gonna be raining that day. Extra bottle of gatorade or water would help if you attend the events in the summer. Bring a tire pressure gauge to check tire pressure changes if you like.
If you maintain your car by a licensed tech or at dealership according to service interval you shouldn't have much problem passing tech. They would mostly look for bad throttle cable, battery or intake that's not secured, bucket seat that's not secured, bad seat belt, cars with fluid leak left/right/center, missing lug nuts, etc etc....

I am the tech guy with ubcscc, basically i look for cracked windshields, secure battery, topped up brake fluid, helmet that is newer than snell 2000, tires that aren't old, cracked, dried out, tumored, or bald. and nothing loose in the car.

How to read cones & course map is very important.

I'm only available for events on Saturday. Would one club be better than the other given that?
Traum
02-18-2013, 10:57 AM
I say it'd be about the same between the 2 clubs -- from my experience, most events are held on Sunday for a variety of reasons. However, driving school events (Velocity / Autox 101) are almost always held on a Saturday.
As a participant, I love doing Saturday events since it means I don't have to drag my exhausted corpse back to the office the following day. But for the organizers, doing Saturday events are significantly more challenging because it means all the setup work needs to be done on Friday -- and most of the organizers have this rather inconvenient thing called "day jobs" that kind of gets in the way. It's easier when there are more volunteers coming out to help, but the limited number of daylight hours after 5pm still puts a significant strain on organizing Saturday events.

Thanks to everyone for the help! What cars do people usually drive? and I have a 350 hp RX7.
Traum
02-18-2013, 05:30 PM
For the most part, I'd still say that the majority of cars at the autox are Hondas (Civics of all kinds and S2k) and Mazdas (Miatas of all generations and some Mazda3's), with Subarus also being quite common in the winter series. That is not to say there aren't other cars. From Corollas (not the Hachi Roku) to Porsches to GTRs, basically if you see them on road, there is a good chance you'll see them at the autox.
Also, you have probably heard this before, but horsepower isn't super important in autox. That is not to say it is not important -- it certainly is. But driver skill is the #1 determining factor. Additionally, I would also say tires and suspension tuning place higher up the list than horsepower as well.

^ What Traum said. Some of the fastest people I've seen - the Yeung brothers - drive a stock Mini Cooper (non-S, so 112hp) with fat tires and post incredible raw times, before they even get indexed. Technique is the most important part of autocross.
I found at UBCSCC, a lot more FRS (and one BRZ) are coming out - which I think is good. You kinda get tired of the same Miatas after a while.... not that they're not awesome.
If you get a chance to go for a ride in some of the cars that people bring in, do it. Ask politely, and most people will let you come for a ride. I still remember being in a Lotus Elise with Racing Compound tires... Maybe it's because there's nothing to hold onto inside the car, but I don't think I've ever felt that many lateral G's in anything else...

The nice guys at the Porsche Club autocrosses also allow non-Porsches to run. :)
Just remember everyone, exhaust and tire noise is a serious issue we have to contend with and we take it very seriously.
Don't be offended if you are approached about a load exhaust or over-driving causing too much tire squeal. Please co-operate so we can all continue to enjoy the facility.

If any of you come over to the Island, Victoria Motorsports Club runs events too. Our next event is Sunday March 3rd at Western Speedway. Check out vmsc.ca or our Facebook page for more info.
When does the UBCSCC start their non slush series events?
It'll probably be some time in April or May (April might conflict with Exam dates, seeing that UBCSCC is a UBC club). Nothing has been set yet though.

man, my windshield has more area cracked than not, tires are old and are off all different makes and sizes, and are very bald. It is a no brainer that I would fail tech. However If I enter and fail do I get the money refunded? I am not saying I am going to enter and go through all this just curious if you fail for an issue you would not think of.
Another question, you guys must have helmets that can be rented or used?
I am going to try and auto x as much as possible this year. I need to start figuring this all out.
I am going to be in town this weekend and seen this event and instantly knew I had to enter my 97 integra LS bone stock with 360 000ks on it but tech would rip it to pieces. No handbrake either and 3 of the 4 calipers are currently working.:failed:
I don't think they would refund you, but if you speak to the club execs, and they might credit you for a future event. Don't quote me on that though - but if you speak nicely to the execs, I could see this happening.
They have helmets you can borrow there. I hope your Integra isn't the car with cracks all over it....

it would definately fail tech according to your description. We usually give credits for future events. But you can post up on our forums, asking to be a co-driver for someone. still come along for many ride alongs. I had to fail a very good member's car last time, due to a hood latch not working. which is another thing you can fail tech for is loose body panels.

Hello everyone!
As always, I'm inviting you all to join me at the next Porsche Club autocross: Sunday July 14th - Double Pad event!
We are super short on drivers, and need 20 more in order to pay for the second half of the skidpad! PLEASE COME OUT AND JOIN US!!!!

For those who've never been out with us, we are a bit more laid back than UBC/VCMC, no classing, just fun, and lots of runs. Last event was 10 runs and a looong course!
Disscussion thread here: PCA-CWR AutoCross - Sunday July 14th (Pitt Meadows) | Official PCA Events and Issues | Forums (http://www.pca-cwr.org/forums/official-pca-events-and-issues/pca-cwr-autocross-sunday-july-14th-pitt-meadows/)
Don't wait to the last second! Sign up early!
Cheers,
Rich

VCMC is excited to host the Canadian Autoslalom Championship at the BC Driving Center August 9-11th.
2013 ASN Canadian Autoslalom Championship (http://cac2013.vcmc.ca/)
The last time we had Canadian National at Vancouver was back in 2007!
Canadian National counts per class not groups. Don't miss out the chance to be a National Champ!

Thurs, Aug 29 - VCMC Mission Track Day
Sun, Sep 22 - VCMC AutoX
PCA and BMW club might also have events as well.

The track day looks awesome but i don't want to race wheel to wheel quite yet... Looks like the vcmc autox on the 22 it is.
Thanks :)

While I would probably recommend people to get their feet wet through autox before taking their cars out to a track day, as long as you are accompanied by an instructor (at the track day) and don't confuse the event with Fast and Furious, you are going to be ok.
One very important point to realize, however, is that track days are not races. You share the track with other cars, but passing is only allowed in designated passing zones, and a strict passing protocol must be followed before any overtaking can happen. While this passing protocol stuff might sound like a killjoy, it is there to ensure everyone's safety, and I can assure you that everybody will still have a boatload of fun.
So think about it. Show up at all 4 events.:D

Great event hosted by Rich S. and the Porsche club. This time it was a very fast track along with A LOT of seat time (13 runs each)

you coming out for team enduro? I'll be driving in that
cya'll at the team enduro ;)
coming out of my cave. I'm so sad I didn't finish the VCMC season though. It was like a two horse race between myself and nicholas. If only I didn't fail my stupid course!

would have been more fun if u stayed in it, r u coming out for cup 6?
i already have nct wrapped up, but we can have a friendly bet for a beer
enduro should be interesting... jack john and you, who's #4?
50% chance of rain too, should mix things up as well
Congrats mate. Told you you'd win it. Haha.
Naw. I apparently owe UBCSCC 50 bucks. So my race ends up being over $100.
After this I'm done for the season I think. Until I find sufficient funds to fund this hobby.
Also I don't exactly know who's 4th yet. Who're you teamed with for the enduro? Don? Nigel? I know Basford's not going though.

Is there any known autocross events up in the Williams Lake/ 100 Mile house area? I recently moved here and would love to get involve locally if there is anything.

I'm reasonably sure there is a small group running autox events in the Prince George area, but I don't have any contacts though.
