Hello Revscene,


I have shaw broadband 50, and have been enjoying its speed for quite some time. I have it set up with a Netgear WNDR3700v3. I share my WiFi with all my tenants and have had no problems until now.

New tenants run torrents 24/7, constantly downloading movies (in full HD) + torrents (and seeding), streaming movies/tv shows on youtube in full HD, skyping etc. and due to this stress my router has started intermittently cutting out lately + giving my unresponsive internet. Also, I'm pretty sure I'm getting close to my bandwidth cap (I torrent, my sister torrents, lots of HD streaming + tenants are abusing the shit out of my generous free WiFi)

Ontop of this, I recently set up a few IP security cameras + connected our CCTV system via ispyconnect to the internet, and now it's super laggy because they hog the bandwidth.

I don't want to macid ban them, but i do want to get my bandwidth back and set a cap on their bandwidth. If it is also possible, I'd like to block torrent ports for them during certain hours. How can I go about doing this? Is anyone familiar with custom firmware for this router? I'm a total networking noob and have no idea where to start.


I've seen a few posts about people having success with my router and DD-WRT and 'Gargoyles' ... anyone care to shed some light?

Do you know if they block MACID or IP directly?


It's a piss off .. they call me downstairs to "fix the internet"

I open their laptop and I find she's trying to stream several HD hindi dramas, and is downloading 6 different movies in HD. Ontop of that skype + a bunch of other shit is running and she has the nerve to ask me why the internets cutting in and out. I warned em but they haven't slowed down, so this is the next logical step :facepalm:

they're from india where there's no enforced piracy laws and the internet is slow as hell ... so this has more or less turned into a free for all for them with decent speeds lol

I think he meant MACID as in MAC address i.e. 00-02-0Z-4B-T8-C7 etc.

MACid isn't an apple thing its like an IP address but its tied to your specific piece of hardware be it a laptop, phone or what have you



network gurus, I found the option I'm looking for. Now, how the hell do I block torrents from this? I'd like to block downloading + uploading. IIRC They use utorrent but I'd like to block ALL torrent ports (I'm not an asshole, I'm only going to block it during certain hours)

I'd like to setup the filter to only filter their IP address, but how do I figure out what that is? Won't it change everyday if they just do ipconfig /renew in CMD? Can I just use the IPs in this screen? (below)

They only called me to 'fix the internet' because the guy's assignments weren't uploading because the wifi kept lagging out LOL. This is ridiculous ... I'm downloading the latest top gear at 90 kB/s .... :rukidding:

just go and talk to them.

1) tell them you got notification there were a lot of downloads and uploads and this is the 3rd notice.
2) you can only "speculate" the "fixing" of the internet is due to extreme downloading
3) if my internet gets shut down, i have no choice but to have everyone pay their own internet as a utility and get their own bill

push comes to shove you can't really just band their internet, u'll just get much more calls and ur router will die faster.

Technically you're not providing a service which is free so if they bitch, you can say, you know what, you can go fuck urself OR... tell u waht, you can pay less rent say 25 bucks a month and u can use that money to use it for your internet.

They are not tech savvy they just know how to use torrents (not very well, considering they let them seed for DAYS off random trackers)

How does one block IP's from utorrent? That's my entire question here ... I have no idea how to block p2p data. Above are the screens I have access to, if you could possibly help with some ports to input that'd be greatly appreciated :D

I know utorrent randomizes the port (or you can randomize it) so I'd have to block a range of ports -- but I don't want to block access to basic internet websites/skype/youtube

i had 2 routers. 1 for the tenants and 1 for myself. i connected the tenants router into my router. the tenants have their own seperate ip address range and i have my own ip address range. on their router i just put a bandwidth limit on it. i just limited them to 10mbps down and .5mbps up.

That sounds super easy and simple -- but I'm not running DD-WRT on my router so I have super basic controls.

the easiest way to figure out which their IP is, is to figure out which IP belongs to your family's devices. after that, you will only be left of your tenants. from there, start blocking one IP at a time 24/7. they will complain, if they don't, win! if they do, they will call you and you will know who it belongs to. keep tabs on which IP belongs to who and what their device name and MAC is. the IP MAY change, but most people don't know how to change their device name and the MAC never changes. so its easy to block that certain device/person if you want to regardless of what their IP is.

IIRC, ipconfig /renew doesn't ever really change the IP. besides, they are not tech-savvy, so i highly doubt they even know what that command is.

as for the utorrent ports, you would have to block from port 1 to whatever the end is (655656 or some shit like that). in utorrent, you can hit it so it runs on a random port. i have never had to set up port forwarding in my router and my utorrent tends to still run fine. but i think if you block all the ports for that IP anyways, its easier to set it up to just block the IP since everything you connect to requires a port (i think).

if you know how to access to MAC filtering, that would be best. I thought my router had it so i can screenshot it for you, but i can't find it =\

Why not tell them that the truth that the way they have set up the torrent program they are using is hogging the internet? you can cange the upload limit and the number of connections in Utorrent so it doesn't bog down the internet.

I would just tell Tenants to get their own internet. I have done this a few times before when I was having this issue .

cant you limit the speed by their MAC address.. I believe Ive seen that option on the netgear setup page..

Definitely have them get their own internet. It's torrents and streaming now, but there's a going to be a shitload of garbage traffic because they've, likely, acquired a lot of malware on the way, and their computer is part of a botnet.

If your router allows setup a seperate Wireless acct for them (like guest1 or something) and then limit the download/upload speed on that account then change the PW to your main wirless netowrk. I beleive you need a router witha dual band or something like that.

This is the best suggestion. DD-WRT should not be required on either router. This not only lets you control access for everyone independently of YOUR network, it also keeps them all OFF your network, and prevents THEIR malware from infecting YOUR systems.

I use this, as well as the Tomato built-in IPP2P filters. These two combined will allow you to severely cap anyone's P2P speeds and even internet speed.

My router does allow for making a guest network and keeping it totally separate from my network. I think I will do that for now, and buy a cheap DD-WRT compatible router, and use it to give them WiFi access. I'm looking into getting a cheap DD-WRT compatible router to set up as a repeater + use it to limit their bandwidth via MACid/IP .. looks like that's the cheapest/best solution

Not just promising, it works very well because I do the same thing as you. Unwanted devices in my network is capped at 300KB/s download, 10KB/s upload, and P2P protocols blocked.

I finally got around to just loading DD-WRT

I made a 2.4 ghz band and a 5.0 ghz band. Piggy backed a virtual network onto the 2.4ghz band and enabled AP isolation (not ideal or as good as getting a second physical router from what I understand, but it's free).

Was able to turn on QoS and access restrictions to restrict p2p ports, and set a macid priority with my computers at the top, and theirs at the very bottom. So far it's been working flawlessly and internet is faster than ever :D
