I noticed quite a few Asian (Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, etc) drama/movie reviews in the other movie thread, and I want to use this thread to compile together drama/movie reviews and suggestions.

I watch NHK quite a bit. My favourites are Partners and the Jidaigeki's. Taiga Dramas have been pretty boring the last couple of years. Tenchijin was good and so was Ryomaden.

As for Asadora, I couldn't get into Dr. Ume Chan, Jun and Ai, or this year's Ama Chan. Gegege no Nyobo is my all time favourite. Teppan and Carnation were OK.

Anyway, I can go on, but doubt anyone follows this stuff.

One of the worst HK movies I've seen in years. The movie is absolutely HORRIBLE, and it is a shame that they ruin the name/title of "Young and Dangerous" with such a bad movie. The plot, character dialogue/development, soundtrack, everything is just disappointing. If you're into triad movies, check out "The Triad" instead.

One of my favourite actors, Lee Byung-hun, stars in this and he does not disappoint. Really good mix of humour and drama in this and the production is top notch.

Been catching up on the past few years worth of TVB dramas lately cause I pretty much stopped watching TVB after the The Academy/OTFB/E.U series. So far I've watched:
-A Great Way to Care - 8.5/10 - Never have I ever felt so smart watching a drama. Watching an episode of this was like sitting through a psyc lecture.
-A Great Way to Care 2 - 5.5/10 - This was sorely disappointing. Pretty much a recycle of the first one.
-Highs and Lows - 7/10 - This one was just alright. Didn't love it, but it wasn't too bad either.
-Friendly Fire - 9/10 - Enjoyed this one a lot actually, even though it was the typical TVB-someone-dies-but-all-ends-well kind of drama. One of the better TVB series I've ever seen.

Just started watching Lives of Omission. Maybe it's cause I'm just a couple episodes in, but it's not that great imo. Hoping it'll get better as I get further into the series.

I'm really liking the new series that HKTV is putting out.

Love the fact that they use all the newest film equipment and their productions are very cinematic.

The thing with TVB dramas some shit get's so predictable and recycled and alot of the dramas they put out are too unrealistic where you end up going :fulloffuck:

With that said I watched
The Confidant: 8.5/10 - Solid acting, story and love the historical drama
Friendly Fire: 6.5/10 - Meh. Watched it to past time. The supporting couple (Sharon Chan & Sammy Leung) had a lot of chemistry
Lives of Omission: 7.5/10 - (This is basically The Academy / EU 4 or 5th edition with focus on Laughing Gor)
Highs & Lows: 8/10 - Cop drama with play on Infernal Affairs. Both male leads were great in this series IMO
Tiger Cubs: 9/10. This is like an SDU version of The Academy & E.U. It ties in with High & Lows.

If you are into HK police drams watch Tiger Cubs first and then Highs and Lows.

Currently not watching any TVB Dramas. Finding most of the recent dramas pretty stale and boring. Looking forward to Triumph in the skies 2 and Tiger Cubs 2 whenever that comes out.

I can't stand watching TVB dramas anymore. It's so garbage. Since the broadcast of Police Boundaries from HKTV, it has given me hope that the tides will turn in HKTV's favor of obtaining their broadcasting licence. TVB production feels so second-class compared to Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, and Japanese productions. I feel that my IQ is plummeting when I watch TVB stuff.

Just finished ep. 3 of TITS2, why is Fala Chen one of the leads in this drama? Her acting is appalling, she can't cry for shit if her life depended on it and is being outshined by other leads. She is being out-acted next to the king of acting Francis Ng, Chi Lam, and soon, Myolie (even though I'm not a fan of her, she's a way better actress). Fala looks so out of place.

I hope not, but it looks that way for now. It makes sense why they would issue it in 2015, but for the HK government to not provide any type of timeline since the announcement back in 2008 is a joke. TVB better watch their back cause it's been said countless of times that they would lose at least 20% of their employees if HKTV's licence was granted. Prior to HKTV producing any dramas, TVB already lost 50 directors and producers to HKTV during the same period. The hatred is deep. Lol

To be honest, all the casts from the original series were so much better in acting than the current crop. TVB was in a far better state 10-12 years ago than they are now, and they only have themselves to blame for their demise. Aside from Francis, Chi Lam, Ron, Kenneth, Nancy, Myolie, and Elena Kong. Everyone else's acting makes me cringe, yes even Fala Chen, either they are very bad in acting, or they can barely speak Cantonese properly (ex. Eliza Sam and the male PPP trainee.. god damn, his accent is even worse than Eliza, makes me go WTF everytime he has a mancrush over Chilam). Newcomers like them would've never had those kind of on-screen exposure 10-15 years ago. TVB should've kept it that way. Instead, they throw anyone in that show that has a pretty face than pray for the best.

Francis Ng, to me, is the star of the show, his acting, is totally top notch, and you can tell that his acting is levels above everyone else. Totally deserve the 3 Male Actor Of The Year awards.

I hope HKTV gets their licence soon, cause TVB dramas make people dumb.

yeah these kinds of films, i think we may be a small minority in todays world that enjoys it. they have more focus on intra relationships, dark humor, rather than just random explosions and shit. here is more substance yet oozing with style. i rarely watch new movies anymore unless its say a tarantino style movie...(Django unchained was amazing)

I just realized after watching 36 episodes of TITS2... NOTHING has happened (There is no plot). Even with Francis, Chilliam, Myolie, Ron, etc, it's not enough to save this drama, or TVB. I skipped so many scenes because I couldn't handle the cringe-worthy/cheesey typical TVB lines.

I really hope the government gives HKTV their license faster. 1 episode of Police Boundaries > 36 episodes of TITS2. I would PAY to watch HKTV drama..

I've been watching a few 90's TVB dramas lately, and the difference in plot and acting compared to what's pumping out these days from TVB post-2000 is astounding. It's like all of the good directors, producers, and scriptwriters died after Y2K, and replaced by an amateur film crew from a local high school. Wtf happened? These days, even if they put together an all-star team casts (which is rare), TVB still can't produce a high quality drama if their life depended on it, even their "grand productions", and anniversary series is crap. If they can't even get these productions right, how can they possibly do a good job of making regular series?

it's not that tvb can't produce good drama, it's cause there's no need to. You can put in any shitty 4th line actors and still have good amount of people watching. It's because there is NO competition. TVB has become the ONLY company that's worthy and actors, producers etc are told what they are worth. People can't compete with TVB because there's literally NO where to go if you are in that industry.
Then 2000 came about and China came about and took a good chunk of these people away. People are given more money and so they bail to earn RMB.

we are left with mediocre people or even junior people working in that industry now.

Half an hour of a 90 minute finale spent watching people scream on a plane (cringe worthy) and bracing for impact.

Last Thoughts

Typical TVB ending! Squeezing all the happiness, suspense, action in the final 2 episodes. Like one poster mentioned, the last 30 min of the show was about a jet undergoing multiple mechanical failures mid-air, through the atrocity and experience, the leading actors overcome the trauma and found their true love. The CG was terrible! It looked so fake. This is year 2013 and the CG looks 1999. The ending was so predictable. TVB is doomed, if this is the best they can put out.

I heard that Tony Leung (Leung Ka Fai), Anthony Wong, and among a few other heavyweight actors from the 80s and 90s will be coming back to film series for TVB next year. Using TITS2 as a measuring stick (Chilam, Francis Ng, Kenneth, Ron, Myolie), I don't expect the productions next year will be of much improvement either.

I agree with the comments about the typical TVB ending. Everyones happy and all that bullshit. However I am surprised at how no one died, seeing as thats pretty much what happened in the last few TVB dramas I watched. And those passengers..I lol'd/cringed so hard at their "OMG WAAAAH HALP :QQ:"

Overall the entire series was just meh. I was looking forward to On Call 36 2, but seeing as how TITS2 was way overhyped, I have a feeling On Call will probably end up like this one.

It's interesting how you use that series as a comparison, because that's probably the best drama series they've produced in the last couple of years, YET when WHB was broadcasted, it stirred up many complaints and controversies from the HK public (mostly see lai's) about the twisted plot (mainly cannibalism), that I don't think TVB will take the risk and go that route again. It was extremely popular among the 20-40 year old crowd though.

Also, most of the leading actors have left since they made that drama series. Bowie Lam, Charmaine Sheh, Moses Chan (I think). That Kenny dude was the odd man out, supposedly he replaced Nick Cheung for the role (as he filmed the trailer, but decided to turn down the job for unknown reasons). What a HUGE DOWNGRADE. Nick Cheung would've been way better for the role.

Sounds like you haven't seen many of his films. In the 90s, he was all about playing comedic roles, but post-2000, he became a dynamic actor, and had chances to play in many different roles, leading him to win a HK Best Actor award a few years ago.

Kenny Wong is 3rd line actor material.
