Interchange to replace last freeway traffic light in Delta | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2013/04/02/interchange-to-replace-last-freeway-traffic-light-in-delta/)
DELTA (NEWS1130) – A freeway traffic signal that has been causing lengthy backups for decades will soon be no more.
The federal and provincial governments have committed tens of millions of dollars for a new interchange at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue in Delta.
Delta’s Chief Administrative Officer George Harvie says it has yet to pass through City Hall, but it’ll be welcomed.
“The impact right now is intolerable and it has been for at least 10 years since I’ve worked in Delta,” he says.
“It’s a major arterial on a residential street really. The majority of traffic heading to Highway 91 is from Surrey so it would be nice to alleviate traffic congestion for Delta residents that’s there now.”
This project was supposed to go ahead in 2005 as part of a Border Infrastructure Plan but fell apart with concerns over design and cost.
It’s unclear when the interchange will be finished, but it’s expected to accommodate all traffic movements.
Highway 91 and the Alex Fraser Bridge were built in 1986.
FINALLY!
I don't drive through that part of Hwy 91 regularly but whenever I do I somehow always run into red lights and it's annoying as shit.

awesome, although I get off work by the time traffic dies down. still sucks to have to stop for few cars to turn left.

I rarely drive that way but I actually like that traffic light because when you're the first car in line and the light turns green, you can step on the gas and accelerate WOT all the way up to 90/100 km/h without worry of getting any tickets. Not many places where you can do that in the city.

I used to live out there and always hated that light. I think someone needs to look at Harris Rd/Lougheed Hwy in Pitt Meadows as well, last time I drove out that way I thought there must have been an accident but it was only the back up from the light.

Seconded on that one. I'm still amazed they didn't build a proper interchange for Lougheed and Dewdney while they had things all ripped up building the new Pitt Bridge.

now that its going to be remove, how about reviewing the speed limit in some street. Speed limit such as the king george blvd right after you come across the patullo bridge from new West into Surrey was a turtling 50km... I've never seen anybody following that speed unless there is a police radar trap .
Are the civil engineers that stupid.?

^ i agree. its a downhill and speed limit is 50km. I always slow down there tho just in case of speed traps.

If the police didn't have ridiculous speed limits at places like the King George Highway.. it wouldn't be easy enough for them to hit their quotas.

They're going to tear that shit down soon. Maybe they'll rethink the speed limit once the new bridge is built.

Odd thing is after the traffic light, speed limit goes up to 60km/h up the King George hill.
I think the speed limit is 50km/h over the Patullo because its so sketch narrow. It's also 50k on the New West side leading up to the bridge, cops love to hang around by the park. But having it upped to 60 immediately after the bridge and before the traffic light should be fine

I shudder to think what that area is going to be like once the Fantasy Garden Condoland is finshed.
I'm trying to convince my parents to get out of Richmond before it's done, because if traffic gets any worse I'm going to stop visiting them.

New interchange in Delta hopes to decrease traffic congestion on Alex Fraser Bridge | Globalnews.ca (http://globalnews.ca/news/2749544/new-interchange-in-delta-hopes-to-decrease-traffic-congestion-on-alex-fraser-bridge/)
The B.C. government announced today it is kicking in $10 million to help get the project of decreasing congestion on the Alex Fraser Bridge and Highway 91 moving again.
The infusion of money is part of the province’s multi-step plan and will go first to a new interchange at Highway 91 and 72nd in Delta, which has been designated as a choke-point for traffic. A major corridor for port traffic, the route is heavily used by commercial vehicles every day to deliver goods to and from market.
“Traffic demand on the Highway 91 corridor – and over the Alex Fraser Bridge – continues to grow as development in Surrey and Delta increases,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone in a statement.
“We need to get going on a fix, and get the traffic moving again. This is why we’ve kicked in an extra $10 million to move forward on a new interchange at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue and developed a robust strategy to help cut the congestion on this key route, both in the short term and also the longer term.”
In total, the B.C. government is funding $20-million towards the $30-million future interchange, which will eliminate the only remaining traffic signal on the Highway 91 corridor.
Moving forward, the province says it will immediately add three more tow trucks on standby and increase their on-site hours and increase the number of highway patrols that will monitor for congestion. The ministry will also start an engineering review process to look at installing a new counter-flow system and introduce an information system.
In the longer term, the province says it will continue to work to push forward new interchanges at Nordel and Sunbury in the areas of Highway 91 and 17 to further address the issues of congestion.
The plan is to provide the design details to the public in the summer, tender the project and begin construction in the fall.

The other majorly f#cked up part in that area is where nordel turns from 3 lanes into 1 to cross over the 91 to go into Delta/get on Alex Fraser. That's a constant cluster f#ck every day now.
More on the plan...
https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2016TRAN0122-000965
The ministry will start an engineering review to look at:
Installing a new counter-flow system on the bridge for the morning and afternoon traffic crunches; and
Introducing an information system that will provide reliable travel information for the various Fraser River crossings at key decision points where motorists can adjust their travel patterns. Dynamic message signs will be installed at key locations on the highway network.

I'm not a fan of them implementing a counter flow system. They say they want to reduce commuter times so people can "spend more time with their families" Well, when they implement a counter flow system, all they are doing is reducing the commute time for those going with the flow of traffic and tagging more time onto the commuter that travels against the flow of traffic because you can guarantee that their travel times will increase. So essentially they are reducing that persons "time with their family" which defeats their reasoning for implementing the counter flow system.
And yes, i'm one of those commuters that goes against the flow of traffic along that route.

unless that's just during rush hour times with this "counter-flow" lane.
traffic flow is at >40kph during rush hour anyways

they should put a toll on it, once the massey tunnel is replaced with a toll bridge the alex fraser is going to be full of cheap/stupid people, worse than the patullo is now

combo of this and removal of the lights at 72nd/hwy 91 and yah, i think we can have a viable rush hour crossing. DO IT ... DO IT NOWWWWW.

But there's gonna be a lot of complaints if you toll almost all entrances into surrey and delta, even if it's a cheap toll. People will either move in to Vancouver, driving prices even higher, or people will simply get out of the city which will stagnant the economy. Or worse, everyone goes on Patullo Bridge.

If they solved the whole problem in one go, they wouldn't have work to do in the future... so they only solved half of the problem. LOL

call me stupid, but what is the point of that traffic light? Isn't it meaningless? Even the through traffic on the off-ramp is meaningless, it's just going to cause congestion for the off-ramp if the southbound traffic is backed-up and a bunch of pricks decide to use that as a bypass for a few hundred meters.
coneZONE

They should've made it a clover-leaf style interchange like where Hwy 91 terminates at Hwy 99. If they even had the intention to properly solve the problem in the first place.
