Hello Everyone,

I'm experiencing very high ping from time to time.

I'm currently running on High Speed Extreme download 25mbps, 2.5mbps upload. If i upgrade to Boardband 50 will it significantly reduce the ping?

There are about 8 computers and 7 phones connected to my Asus RT N56U Router. My dad and my sister uses PPS and Funshion (P2P Streaming program).

If there are other ways around it please comment.

one way is to uninstall their PPS and Funshion from their computers but I doubt they would let you... :lawl:

My mom uses them too and I become very frustrated when she has them running as it takes so much bandwidth.

Upgrading to Broadband 50 wont help you much since the programs will still take as much bandwidth it needs to stream the drama that your dad and sister are watching LOL

You need to set up a QoS in your router, it provides different priority to different applications

if the asus firmware's QoS isn't doing much, maybe ddwrt on the n56u may give you greater options. i have a dinky 655 and setting priorities based on ports and the type of traffic seems fine while I max out my bb50

im serious, you should update your firmware to ddwrt. It improves the router's performance. I would update my router (Dir-655) if only it was available for it =S

QOS is not created equal across all consumer routers. It's been proven that the QOS setting in many firmwares actually don't do much at all to regulate bandwidth and services.

QoS on my DIR665 and DIR655 seems to do okay
8 devices + tablets/phones may just be overloading that one router...i seriously doubt getting 50mbps connection will help you much in your case.
perhaps get a DDWRT capable router...and give a 2 router set up a try (4 computers connecting off each one)
maybe that'll lighten up the load.

if you can find out the ports those program use then maybe you can block those port on your router interface.
Another way is to find your mom's sister MAC address and restrict the bandwidth on those MAC address.

Thanks Happy Slip, i did restrict the band width for both computers. This is my set up right now, and i set my dad and sis's computer to the lowest. Are my settings correct?

Dad's and Sis's computer are set at the lowest.. There is nothing i can do but to get another modem + router?? =/

You are already using a high-end router with a decent internet connection, and based on the number of connected devices. Your router should be able to easily handle the traffic.

The reason that your ping is terrible is because your router settings are not optimized for gaming. Your primary concern is to control the amount of traffic thats going into each device, and restrict that. All the devices are eating up alot of your bandwidth causing your ping time to drop. Also, if there is a "Optimize for gaming" setting. Use that.

An upgrade to 50Mbps internet connection will help in the long run, but only after you've optimize your router settings, otherwise it will remain a "free-for-all" for all the devices connected.

meh....PPS hardly use any bandwidth

On average at my place in China, we have at least 15-20 mobile device connected on my network and 2-3 rooms streaming videos off PPS, sohu, etc to an Apple TV and I'm running off a fucking 8Mb ADSL line, since my place do not have fiber coverage.

At the moment I'm just using a DLINK DIR605 to route all of my network. I also have like NAS, PS3, xbox, printers and half a dozen computers connected to the same network. As long as I don't have BT running, everything runs fine.

i use a program called netlimiter for my fiance's house

i installed it on every computer that uses PPS, and limit the upload to 15kb

no problem with that ever since
you can find netlimiter on torrents easily

or you can try this free alternative
NetBalancer - internet traffic control tool for Windows (http://seriousbit.com/netbalancer/)

i dont have experience with it myself, but i have friends who tried it with great success

make sure when you do limit with either netlimiter or netbalancer, you choose specific programs or the whole system in general

doing it for pps/funshion specifically would be best
and dont set it to a low number because from my experience, setting it under 15kb upload screws up with pps making it not able to stream any video at all

I really like the first firmware where i get to prioritize "Game Blaster" then
"net surfing then P2P" etc.. the new firmware does not have that feature. =/

SOO all i got to do now is to find the Funshion Port??? or PPS Port?? and limit it .. i guess lol

i would recommend installing it on all the pc running PPS

its a quick install, and works the best (from what ive tried atleast)

Have you tried running an ethernet cable to your computer, instead of using the wireless?

the reason is because I heard that on shaw extreme 20, it depends on how many people are on in my neighbourhood but broadband 50 is more of a direct line. (not sure if true or not)

I noticed when I plug my modem directly into my PS3 my download speed is a lot faster than going through my router (still wired connection, and I do have all the appropriate settings in my router settings.)

Those modems that have a built in router, do they specialize in improving broadband 50's performance? or are they just generic routers that shaw got for cheap?

more direct line? no not true,
ethernet will be faster majority of the time than wireless

by appropriate settings in your router, have you tried trying out different wireless channel?

what router do you have?

shaw modems are pretty bad, most routers off the shelf are better than the shaw ones, they dont give good wifi signal as they dont have an antenna at all

the shaw modem router sucks as a router/wifi unit.

In your situation i would try another router. Which router do you have now?

I have BB 50. Doubled my speed for the first few days. Then it dropped back down. Honestly didn't notice a difference. DL speeds are a little better but it all depends on the server you're downloading from of course.

In your situation i would try another router. Which router do you have now?

call Shaw and ask them to change your modem to "bridged" mode. This turns off the wifi function and makes it strictly a modem. Just plug in the router of choice and you're done.

also ain't no way a wireless connection is faster than a wired connection

i was told that u can actually change to bridge mode urself, u just need to log into the router with the name n pass on the sticker on the modem

you can turn off the wifi on it by yourself, but you cant bridge it yourself

you are on the old plan just like ine, shaw extreme is essentially BB50, according to the Shaw rep; however, the old extreme plan allows you to add secondary line meaning 2 extreme lines whereas if you were to upgrade to BB50 and decides you want a second line I think your only option is to upgrade to the next one up.

I got a secondary extreme line because it was too much hassle trying to reduce ping or tinker with softwares..etc

but extreme is only 25mbps its essentially highspeed 20 but with a high upload

bb 50 is def much more faster than extreme plan
however, you need one of the router modems in order to be able to get speeds above 25

whatever that rep is telling you is not true.. he must be high or he have no clue wtf he's talking about. 2 huge difference.. 25mbps vs 50mbps.. and your limit i think it's like 180gb for extreme vs something like 400gb for bb50.. and whenever people in the house are streaming shit off pps qvod whatever the hell they use.. make sure when they are done.. go look in their task manager and see if all the side programs are close.. pps = ppap, qvod= qvodterminal.. your program can be closed.. but as long as those task are still running.. it's constantly *seeding other ppl and lag the hell out of you when you are gaming.

it is much more strict now for the vancouver area as headoffice is no aware that our student passes do not have an expiry date

you just need to scan your student id + transcript/schedule and send it to shaw or just go to a shaw retail store and they will do it for you
