Will a DIY oil change have any effect on the status of a car that's still covered under factory warranty?

I know Mr. Lube always advertises "warranty approved" service but I'd rather not take my mom's car there. Will any repair shop suffice?

Just keep receipts of the oil you bought and record it on a spreadsheet.

How can recording when I might have bought a filter and a jug of oil prove that I did indeed perform the service? Can't the dealer just turn it around and say that any problems *knock on wood* were caused by shoddy workmanship?

Keep the receipts and you should be golden if anything goes wrong related to previous oil changes.

I never had issues doing it that way. Open up your owners manual in the glove box and there should be somewhere in it a maintenance log to record oil changes/ect in.

If your dealership is going to void your warranty because its not done by them, they are shady and use another dealership for service.

I have a notebook on which I write down the date, and mileage when the oil/filter/maintenance work was done. With the receipts for everything in a folder.

Mobil 1 is fine. It is also the only "warranty approved"(or something like that) for Honda. I think OEM=Mobil 1 for Honda

Document your oil changes. eg take pictures of mileage, double check the mileage is on the receipt etc. The onus is on you to prove that you have done the maintenance require to keep the warranty valid. Honda dealers' advantage is they have everything at one place so you don't need to look / keep track.

Remember warranty is never void until the manufacturer denies you! Basically you are adding an opening for Honda to weasel out if bad things happen. Also even if they deny you warranty, it should be only for a specific part of the car eg oil change shouldn't affect your electrical warranty eg power windows or leaking etc. Unless you have totalled or written off your car, then the warranty is gone.

I would just use OE / Honda filters.. you can get them cheap and in bulk in the States anyways. Get a box (usually a dozen) should last you through the warranty period.

You shouldn't have any issues doing the oil change yourself.
Its actually probably safer than letting some kid at a quick lube strip your drain plug.
The whole "warranty approved service" is all bullshit anyways.
