An inclusive discussion of all genres and sub-genres of rock music; classic, psychedelic, metal, punk, alt, hard, and all things in between.
In memory of Jeff Hanneman, RIP to a pioneering icon of metal.
The Smashing Pumpkins: Mellon Collie, "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" (1995).

Hole: Live Through This, "Violet" (1994).
The lyrics recount Courtney Love's experience dating Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Courtney's husband, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, performed background vocals, can you hear him?

Nirvana: In Utero, "Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" (1993).
RIP Kurt; April 5, 1994 (four days following the release of Live Through This).

Them Crooked Vultures: Single, "New Fang" (2009).
A supergroup colab, consisting of John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Dave Grohl (Nirvana and Foo Fighters), and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, The Desert Sessions, Kyuss, Screaming Trees). Dave and Josh have each belonged to multiple of the most significant bands of the nineties, so I'm definitely attracted to this colab.

I haven't seen a concert at Deer Lake park, but I've seen other outside concerts. In my experience, at outside concerts great acoustics are sacrificed for an interesting atmosphere. To me, Alice in Chains wouldn't benefit from that atmosphere and would suffer considerably from the poor acoustics. I'm passing on this show. Tragically Hip, Sublime, Red Hot Chilli Peppers are the style of band I would want to see at an outside venue.

I'll be at Alice In Chains. Never seen them live before so I figured this was my chance.
As for outdoor vs. indoor, I much prefer indoor for acoustics. I've seen many shows at Thunderbird stadium in the 90's(Edgefect, Metalica, The Hip) and while there is a natural slope in the back for sounds to bounce off of it was still pretty meh. I absolutely love the Commedore and would see bands I didn't even like just because of the venue.

What's the deal with this Folk Rock revival going on right now with Mumford & Sons & The Lumineers? I barely listen to the radio now but was surprised to hear the genre on top 10 radio, seemingly out of nowhere. Perhaps Arcade Fire winning a Grammy paved the way?

I LOVE female vocalists, and Serena Ryder has a very 90's sound, so I'm into this girl's music. It's pretty soft, so you Slayer and Alice in Chain fans might not dig it as much. Serena's a Canadian girl too, always feels good to support home grown talent.

I've seen Stone Temple Pilots twice in concert; once Scott Weiland was clean-ish, once he was on heroin. Weiland is an amazing talent, vocally extraordinary and a gifted showman. Clean-ish, he lead STP in putting on one of the best shows I've ever seen. High, I nearly left, his addiction was almost tangible. I hear STP is now performing without Scott again, and I somewhat doubt they'll reform once more, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he OD'd soon.

Maybe I'm biased as a singer, but what impresses me the most about rock is the vocals. You need to have equal parts of grit and control, which is one of the hardest things to do properly without damaging your vocal chords.
Yeah, yeah, guitar shredders. But with the amount of Asian kids on youtube that can give the biggest names a good run for their money at guitar shredding, it's not as rare as a solid vocalist.
One of my favourite rock singers is Adam Gontier formerly of Three Days Grace. Too bad he quit the band. Now Matt Walst from My Darkest Days is filling in for Adam, but Matt sounds too kiddy punkrock. I think the band will be done in a few months.

The anthropology (I'm looking at you, Dino) and history nerds would likely enjoy "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey." Amazing documentary on the history of metal, produced by Sam Dunn, who has a Ph.D in the subject, and includes interviews with Ronnie James Dio, Dee Snider, Tom Morello, Tony Iommi, Lemmy, Kerry King, so many epic stars with amazingly cool insights. It might be tough to track down, I'm not sure, trust me though, it's worth the effort.

I'm glad TDG and A7X were mentioned in this thread. Listened to both of these bands religiously throughout highschool and they both remain one of my favorites to this day (at least the original lineup albums from both bands). Yeah, TDG's latest album was pretty so-so. The only 2 songs that seem to catch my ear are Chalk Outline and High Road.
No one knows for sure why Adam quit, though the word out there is "due to vocal health issues." Which isn't all that surprising. I personally know the drummer of a band (probably best kept anonymous) that toured with TDG a few times, and he said that Adam would have coffee while smoking a joint like 3-4 times everyday. And as a singer, the worst things for your voice are smoke, caffeine, alcohol, and salt.
However, judging by the posts on Adam's FB page, he was sick of writing the same songs over and over. I guess the label kept pushing him to write catchy melodies, with no real message or emotion behind them, and he just had enough.
A7X is just a freakin cool band altogether. M Shadows' voice is damn good. Though I'm not too fond of the weird inflections he uses when he sings the lower notes, but that's just nitpicking.
I don't care too much for screaming in general, but the way Adam and Shadows can hold a smooth note with that grit is just fucking awesome.

Dustin and Teppei pretty much make the band. Their writing and performance skills are just SO damn solid. Not to take anything away from the bassist and drummer. Some of their drum lines are pretty intense too.
On another note, the folk rock revival thing can be pretty cool, like edward sharpe for me. I really hate mumford and sons though. I'm pretty sure its actually just great big sea with a new name and fake accents.
I don't know how I feel about the folk scene coming back. I can't explain it, but I think I err more to the "dislike" side than the "like" side. Even though folk is supposed to be more "honest," for whatever reason, it seems more gimmicky to me.
I'm with you on the Mumford thing. They seem like they're trying way too hard to be different. To be uncool because it's cool.
However, when it comes to the folk vein, I actually like that Phillip Phillips dude more than Mumford. He seems more down to earth, and you can tell by his performances and his album that he's not trying to impress anyone or be anything special. Which is way more charming than having a folk sound just for the sake of being in that genre.
When he worked with Jimmy Iovine, Jimmy said that Phil basically did everything. Phil knew exactly who he was an artist and exactly what he wanted his songs to sound like, and Jimmy ended up doing next to nothing in terms of producing, because Phil didn't need anything more than what he already had.
When he was asked to do this AOL session with a full band, he chose to do it acoustic, just him and his guitar. Shows that he doesn't need any smoke and mirrors to hide behind. This cat has my respect.

Haha yeah I agree with you about how M.Shadows sings lower notes. Not a big fan of that throaty thing he does. I am however, a huge fan of The Rev's voice. I don't even know how to describe it. The Rev's was more special because A7X as a whole was heavier than the other screamo-ish bands, so the contrast between his voice and Shadows was bigger. Sorta like Dallas Green when Alexisonfire was still together.
I've never been much of a fan of the whinier sounding vocals mixed in with screaming (The Used, Silverstein, Bullet for my Valentine, Underoath, etc etc), though I did like select songs from each of the listed bands.

I've never been much of a fan of the whinier sounding vocals mixed in with screaming (The Used, Silverstein, Bullet for my Valentine, Underoath, etc etc), though I did like select songs from each of the listed bands. It was such a formula when I was in high school. Sing a verse about being in love, scream about how they ruined your life and you want to kill them, sing about how you'd still do anything for them. Not going to lie, there are tons of songs from bands mentioned I like, and ones that were there as well, but the bands that had any longevity really grew out of that. i.e. Underoath, thursday, brand new, even Taking back sunday. The ones that didn't disappeared so fast.
I've been listening to a lot more straight up punk rock like back when I got into the music like Bronx, Lawrence Arms, Rancid, Gallows, etc. A few chords, a good riff, and some fast as fuck drums behind a guy yelling his fucking face off never goes out of style.

I'll defend Nickleback any day, because I believe they've produced some decent music over the years, and the hate they receive is unfounded. "Rockstar" and "Burn it to the Ground" are pretty decent, although highly overplayed.

I've seen them twice (GM Place, AESC); in person, I'm a little meh about them. The show is interesting, but the antics detract somewhat from the quality of the music. I want to see them onstage, pouring there heart into the music with that being the single focus.

the only reason these guys became popular was to fill the gap in the early 2000s because of the lack of "rock" music being produced. something was needed to compete against Blink-182 and The Fox needed to fill the air space. We were all subjected to terrible melodic faux-rock until we all wanted to barf. Finally people started to catch on and united in hating the worst band that Canada ever produced (yes, even with Rush).

Nirvana on that list? Who was voting in this poll, Beliebers and Twi-hards??? Nirvana DEFINED a genre... and a generation.
As far as Nickelback, I hate to admit it, but I dig a lot of their tunes. I actually saw them live opening for Creed many years back (a show that Creed bailed on, but we still got to see Nickelback and Sevendust opening, AND got full refunds for the tickets!). It was right after their second album came out, they were still cutting their chops, but they put on a helluva show, solid performance start to end.
I recall reading somewhere that Chad Kroeger said he got into music with the intent of becoming a rock star and getting stupid rich, and kudos to him, he did it. There's a saying, that only 1% of bands who try, actually make a living at it... and only 1% of those actually become rich and famous... well, he figured out what people wanted to hear, and he delivered it, and good on him for working hard to become "the 1% of the 1%". Also, props for reviving good ol' cock-rock :)

I remember seeing Jar (now Flybanger), Gob, and Nickleback....can't remember the others. Back then they had a different drummer who was one of my best friend's brother....then he went to Bif Naked...now he is with Hedly.

This.
The early heavier stuff from Nickelback (I'm talking about stuff from their first album up to The Long Road, none of the Burn it to the Gound bs) is actually not too bad imo. It's just too bad all their radio singles are the shitty generic Chad Kroeger throaty yelling pop songs.
Ehhh I don't hate Nickelback as much as everyone else does, not that I have a single one of their songs on my playlist.
They're just a standard band with a standard image, standard melody/song/chord structures.
But the thing is, none of the members are exceptional at what they do. Most bands full of sub-par instrumentalists are largely carried by their singer, but Chad really isn't that great. As much as I love Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier pretty much made that band.
There's nothing I like about them, but nothing I really dislike either. They're just meh.

Linkin Park is without a doubt my all-time favourite band/artist (as you can probably tell by my avatar). Was so stoked when I got to meet them last year at their concert.
I met Chester last year, but at a casual seminar type deal with a bunch of my fellow vocal teachers that teach a certain technique.
A little tidbit for those interested - Back when Chester was screaming his brains out, he actually damaged his vocal chords bad and had to go on a long break. His voice got so messed up that he could barely talk, let alone sing/scream. He then went to Seth Riggs, who was the founder of this technique and also Michael Jackson's vocal coach, and Seth actually revived Chester's voice through exercises and proper care.
When your vocal chords are damaged, they're never going back to the way they were before. That's part of why you'll notice Chester actually sings instead of screams in their newer songs, and even live now, when they perform their older stuff. Mind you, he still screams live, but very sparingly.
A lot of metal singers are too arrogant to get their vocal chords checked, and they keep screaming improperly night after night, forcing it through. They either end up needing surgery, or their career just simply ends. Good thing Chester had the discipline to go to Seth.
holy shit, they opened for Deftones with Die Mannequin back in '07. I totally never made that connection until now. trippy.
Right?
Skrillex must've made a pretty penny when he was in From First To Last, touring with Deftones, Fall Out Boy, and All American Rejects.
Probably spent all his time and money after quitting the band to buy his gear and getting into electro/dubstep producing ... and then sweeping at the Grammys.
Good for him, you can't hate on that.
Edit: Holy shit, if he's only 25 now, that means he was only 16 when he was the singer for FFTL? :ahwow:

My point does not abuse the term, "homophobic."
In the comic, contemporary metal is criticized on eight basis points: "what the fuck are you saying," "overly-straight hair," "gay/bi-sexual," "it looks like a chick," "angsty/emo behaviour," "scream, scream, scream," "enjoys the cock," and "shit music;" additionally, "I am a faggot" is written on the cartoon's shirt. Out of the eight criticisms, two are based on sexual preference; the writing on the cartoon's shirt also rails against sexual preference. The comic's creator clearly considers a musician's sexual preference of importance, and specifically, considers womanizing an attribute and gay or bisexual preference a detriment. That's it, simple. A reasonable alternative explanation does not exist.
Motley Crue are icons of metal, but not because they stuck wine bottles in groupes. The Kiss army doesn't exist because Gene Simmons allegedly slept with 5000 women.
Motley Crue are icons because of the chemistry Vince, Mick, Nicki, and Tommy have together, and they found each other because the culture around music was so much different. The very same logic applies to Kiss. Ultimately, the Dave Growl quote sums it up perfectly.
The comic is idiotic, as is the widespread ideology it's based on.

Durbin was just okay in my books.
Sure, he had the range, but I didn't like how bratty and wide he sang everything.
Even though he was often compared to Lambert... Talking strictly from a technique standpoint, James has a loooong way to go before he's anywhere near Adam.

Guilty pleasure. I watch all those shows. Not so much as a fan boy, but more as a critic. To see what whoever is saying about whoever or whatever.
Idol this season was a joke. They were pushing way too hard for a girl to win this season, and with the current results, I wouldn't be surprised if it was rigged. No one from the live shows on was even that great. Candice is good, I'll give her that. But seriously, none of the guys should have been up there. (With the exception of one generic pretty-boy who was pretty good. Was surprised when he got sent home. Paul?)
I did like Phil Phillips from last season, but this season is just all very, very, wrong. With the exception of Keith Urban and sure, even Seacrest, they should replace everyone else.
I'm way bigger on the Voice and X Factor. They just have more flavor. And talent.
Any single one of the singers on the Voice's current top whatever is good enough to win. Only 2 or 3 of Idol's live show contestants were that good.
I stopped watching Idol this year after the stuttering guy got eliminated. He wasn't very good, but I was interested in how far he'd get.

I can't look at Kree this year without seeing Rose from Two and a Half Men :lawl: She and Candace both have good voices, but no... pizzazz. I was kind of hoping for Angie, not so much because she was stupidly cute, but because she had some real musical talent - jammed on the piano, AND wrote her own songs, on top of a killer voice. Had to agree with the panel on her, the way she smiled her way through even the saddest songs was kind of off-putting, like she couldn't "feel" them because nothing had ever gone wrong for her. Seeing her break down when she was eliminated was almost... well, encouraging, because I had just been thinking, the only thing missing from her music was having her heart broken once or twice. I can see her going on to have the longest-lasting career, just because she actually writes her own music, and it's actually GOOD.
I will say one thing for the crop of the last four or five finalists this year: they were all good at starting songs off strong. One of the first things I noted about Carrie Underwood was how she started every song strong, where almost everyone else would almost always start really quiet and kind of build up to the wailing Big Note at the end. As "meh" as most of them were this year, at least they were better in that regard.
Anyway, enough about all that, let's get back to the rock, shall we? Little space-inspired break....

I was a little hesitant to buy tickets too, because personally, a terrible performance permanently scars my enjoyment of an artist. I read this review of Courtney's performance at Sundance in January, though, and it sounds like she's in a great state.
You should totally get tickets.
Going to see Courtney Love last night at the Star Bar in Park City as part of its Sundance music events, I was half expecting to see a washed-up mess, the Courtney Love of the joking stereotypes. But throughout the evening, she did much to make me dismissive of such a thing.
After local openers New City Skyline, Love made a grand entrance to the strains of Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ and took on the question head on—playing a few verses of Neil Young’s "My My, Hey Hey" ("It’s better to burn out than fade away"). Then, throughout the rest of the evening demonstrated that she’s done neither.
In a set consisting almost completely of '90s-era Hole songs, she galvanized the audience and reminded us of the power of rock music, making any pondering of her as "burn out" evaporate into thin air. For the film-festival crowd, her first official performance since touring the album Nobody’s Daughter with Hole in 2010 and announcing the breakup of the reunited version of Hole last October firmly re-established her as a solo musician, though the most recent incarnation of the band was her backup. It’s the Courtney Love show, with whichever other musicians are in tow. "Skinny Little Bitch" from Nobody’s Daughter had the audience singing along, as did "Miss World."
All the old nuggets worked their magic, but the biggest surprise of the night was her "experiment" -- adding acoustic chord backing to Jay-Z’s "99 Problems," changing the title of the song to "99 Problems But Being a Bitch Ain’t One" and thus taking on another of her lingering epithets. And her repetition of the line, "ain’t nothing sweet bout how I hold my gun" throughout the night, relishing the words, was especially provocative. In a moment of histrionics, she later said she wanted to say hello to any members of her "fucked-up family" in attendance.
With Love's rock & roll prowess on display in spades, the other highlight of the evening was "Northern Star," accompanied on acoustic guitar by Hole guitarist Micko Larkin, the pain re-emerging as she raised her voice to a scream on some of the lyrics. "I wait, praying to the North star/I’m afraid it won’t lead you very far." Amidst the chill of winter in the mountains, her vulnerability and fearlessness was stirring.
"Malibu" was also very moving. Grunge was largely about the loud-soft-loud dynamic, and Love evidenced an emotional dynamic that, rather than being the roller coaster one might expect, was controlled and powerful. Some grunge music has aged better than others, but these songs still conveyed the same incandescence as when they were written. She began the show in a smart pant suit, returning for the encores in a black negligee, playing with feminine stereotypes as she’s done throughout her career, whether you see the way she does it as shtick or a sophisticated form of performance art.
Before a second quick encore, the show was book-ended by a cover of "Thirteen" by Big Star, in which the line "Rock & roll is here to stay" reiterated the sentiment of Neil Young ("Hey hey, my my, rock & roll will never die") in the show’s opener. It certainly emphasized the point that Love doesn’t seem about to slow down her pursuit of making rock & roll music that’s still vital and meaningful any time soon.

Good for you for not giving a fuck.
I have this pop punk conversation all the time with the music industry peeps here. IMO, I found that the pop punk genre was very short lived. Blink, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World were pretty much the trend setters in that new "transition".
Then very shortly after, you had all these guys flooding in claiming to be pop-punk when they were basically pop boybands. Sugarcult, Simple Plan, All-American Rejects, Yellowcard, etc.
Not that genre definition really matters, but all these boybands are all straight up pretty-boys and lack that punk edge which to me, represents that culture.
(Nothing against the boybands, I do like my share of pop music.)
Then very shortly after THAT, all these emo-make-up-black-nails bands started flooding in. My Chem Romance, The Used, From First To Last, etc.
Canadian bands won't make it. Sum 41 and Simple Plan were smart when they charged head-first at the American labels, and their hard work paid off.
The upcoming guys now like Hedley and Mariana's Trench will never get picked up by an American label after being tied down to Canadian labels. Hedley's come close, but got signed and dropped like 5 times by the Americans. They just can't compete with the millions of American bands all doing the exact same thing.

:fuckyea: Those two bands alone would be worth the price of admission. It's been a dozen years or more since I was at a big festival like that though, my ageing bones may not appreciate it. In fact, I think the last time was Foxfest at Thunderbird, with Metallica, Tea Party, Matt Good, and Suicidal Tendencies. Damn, that was a long time ago...

I hear ya...If i buy tickets, I am going to bring a comfy chair and sit in the way back and watch the concert like a grandma lol. Pretty sure I`ll also be complaining about the smell of pot and bitching that these kids don`t understand how awesome AiC and IME are.
I haven't been to a festival-type concert in year either. Was at lollapalooza 95 and most of the Edge Fests in the 90s as well.
Saw IME with they played with Moist and Holly McNarland (sp?) back then as well. I saw them another time as well, but I can't remember when and where. I liked their earlier this before Edwin got all pop-music.
As for AiC....I bleed that band.

You talking my language! Dig and Scenery & Fish were epic summer tunes back in the mid-late 90's for me. I went to some of the Edgefest's as well(96,97,98 maybe). Saw Holly McNarland with The Gandharvas at the Commodore(epic shit!).
Surprisingly, with the many shows I attended in the 90's, I've never seen AiC in concert. Don't think I caught IME either. I thought they were at one of the Edgefest's but I think it was OLP headlining or Tea Party maybe(ugh my memory, lol)

In honour of the update to an Eddie Vedder avatar: who do you consider to be the best singer in Rock?
I give it to Eddie for his range and a close-second is Layne for his control and power. Kurt gets honorary recognition for his intonation.

Anyone of them of that selection other than Cobain can be argued for, however I gotta go with Eddie. So many people try to be him and just can't. On top of him being an amazing singer and lyricist he's got to be the most talented songwriter of the bunch IMO. He's good at everything he does. His solo stuff is some of the most emotion provoking music. If you've never heard Chris cornells solo stuff with Timbaland......go listen and I bet you will laugh for hours. He really put a smear on an impressive career with that choice.

I like that you say that every vocalist in the list expect Kurt is a contender, Westopher. He wasn't that great of a vocalist, but the 'best vocalist debate' is very often between him and Eddie. He's over appreciated in that respect because he had an interesting voice and died young.
Here's something a bit different from the general tone of the thread.
Flogging Molly - Factory Girls
Flogging Molly Factory Girls - YouTube
Singing teacher chiming in here.. So unfortunately I have no choice but to be a little technical. :( It's a shame, really. Sometimes I wish I didn't know what I know about the voice, because I always find myself picking apart a song's vocal rather than just enjoying the music as a whole.
"Best vocals" is of course, very subjective. Personally, I always listen for technique -- control of rasp, riffs, runs, vibrato, and most importantly, range. Anyone can make low notes sound good if you sing it over and over enough, but having your upper register in your skill set is a whole other level.
With modern rock, having a big range is pretty much a "must" now, so it's hard to compare older bands vs the newer ones.
My current favourite for the gritty "rock" sounding voice is M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold. He's got the range, the riffs, runs, slides, and adding rasp on those high notes is a whole different skill in singing. Sort of a similar style to Eddie Vedder's, but more consistent.
Avenged Sevenfold - Gunslinger (big note and riff at 1:40, some high notes/screams at 2:40)

A bit more pop than rock, but here's David Cook. Wish he did more heavier rock stuff. He's definitely got the pipes for it.
(Big note at 1:00... and hits it effortlessly)
David Cook Acoustic "Light On" 4/28/11 - YouTube
And then there's Adam Lambert. This guy is definitely an anomaly. If I had to pick "the" best male singer out there, my vote would go towards him. His range and technique is unparalleled.
Covering Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. I don't even have any spots to point out. This whole performance is a mindfuck.

Definitely a great post PJ! I couldn't even begin to pick a favorite singer/front man. So many good choices especially if you combine all the genres within "Rock". Based on vocals alone it's tough to not pick Adam Lambert. I mean vocally he seems to be the complete package. All the others mentioned are great choices. I was really into Jon Crosby of VAST in the late 90's so he would be on my list. I'm also a massive Deftones fanboy so Chino Moreno is just amazing to me.
