Looking for smaller, cozy place for tapas/beer or maybe wine. I prefer something unique atmosphere and vibe.
Something similar to places like GUU or some gastown type of place.
Any suggestions?

Espana (Denman) or Sardine Can (Gastown) both Spanish.
Suika or Rajio both sister restaurants of Kingyo

We love going to Gyoza King. Fits your criteria: small and cozy with a nice selection of beer.
Flying Pig isn't small..but definitely a great place for eats and date night. NOt really a tapas place though. Merchant for some nice wine and seafood. Havana's for mixed drinks and appies. Actually none of these are really small.
Actually..what is considered..small? Like a 20 person seat resto? And does it have to be in Downtown?

Espana is a perfect choice.

Sushi-hachi (Richmond, not Vancouver)
Sushi bar+ 7 or 8 tables+ Open only 5 days a week (3/4 hours a day) + 1 server (wife) + 1 sushi chef (husband)
Not really "tapas" but they serve fresh sashimi and sushi rolls and nigiri, etc.
More for the food I think... for this restaurant (reserve ahead of time).
the eatery is always a fun joint.

Tried to go to sushi Hachi, but they close so early, last call at 8:30......,
Also missed the sardine can, which closes at 9.
End up going to SUika...which seems like a nice place,, reminds me of GUU... every kitchen guy and servers yell at each other in japanese.
I have tried Gyoza king before, didnt really find their food too great.. Also I dont like sitting on hard wood, hurts the back and butt for awhile... plus possible stinky socks with all the customers there

Yes, whenever I go there, I see at least 4 parties get turned away because they didn't make a reservation.

Just reserve a table. I refuse to sit on the faux-tatami area. But since you don't like it then I guess it doesn't really matter.
