Latest rumor has it that the licences will not be granted until 2015 when TVB and ATV's Free-to-air licences are also up for renewal.

Yeah. Most likely it was a desperate move by HKTV to try and get more audience and fan support so they can officially go on air. As well as to gather more companies to advertise on their channel. If I remember right, HKTV already signed many actors and their budget is running into the negatives.

atv rarely make tv shows anymore all the do is buy, so this pretty leaves them no option

china is actually where all the money is at right now but tvb only lets there actors flim 2 mainland dramas per-year, there also a bunch a restrictions as well

Ricky Wong claims that he's put all his investments into this bond where it's guaranteeing him an annual ROI that's more than enough to keep the company afloat. You can take that with a grain of salt. If HKTV gets their licence, you can expect more TVB actors and crew members to jumpship immediately.

Well China is the new market now for a lot of the actors. If you are a popular actor you can make 10x as much per eposide when you do a series in China Vs. TVB. Not to mention china is a huge market with lot's chance to make huge $$$ (comericals, shows, concerts.....). That's why you see a lot of the popular TVB actors all quit TVB once they got famous and going to China.

Another factor is that TV shows from China is a lot better script than TVB.

-so many employees now work for HKTV.. (what's going to happen to their jobs/etc)?
-Ricky Wong spent millions... investing, stimulates ecnomy?

No official reason was given by the HK government.

Some are speculating the reason that HKTV got rejected was because there was influence from the PRC government that they didnt want HKTV to have their licence granted. As Ricky Wong had always been very anti-china with his political views, and that if he was granted a FTA licence, ATV may go bankrupt in less than a year. ATV is heavily invested by Chinese mainlanders, and is said to be the mouthpiece of the Mainland government. HKTV is the most ambitious and innovative of the the newcomers, with very strong public support in HK. The mainland government does not want further influence from HKTV.

Currently HKTV can either file for a judicial review, wait another few years with the possibility that they may grant more FTA licences or buy ATV. The former option is the most likely situation.

They've already laid off over 300 employees, with more to come in the coming weeks.

Apple Daily claims this is a two pronged scheme

1) They'll lose control over TVC (the Chinese gov that is)
2) The China owners want to unload the dud that is ATV so by not giving HKTV the licence it would force them to buy ATV.

But then this is Apple Daily so don't believe a word of this.

What is surprising is that there's no mention of alternative methods of broadcasting, there's no mention of Netflix like system, paid youtube channel, anything. I guess Chinese people just want free shit LOL

???????????????????????????? ?2013?10?22?? - YouTube

Partial translation:

First of all, (on behalf of) all employees of HKTV I like to thank 120,000 citizens (of Hong Kong) for their support; to thank them for (going on the streets) to make their demands known. It's been seven days since the announcement that our application had been denied and the people have spoken out in unambiguous terms. However, the response from the Chief Executive this morning is like adding oil to fire. It did nothing to resolve the situation and we are very disappointed by it.

Right now, TV licence has turned into a major social issue; all eyes are on the Chief Executive and the Executive Council's operational principle (?) and manner of conduct; the action taken by our colleagues has also caught the world's attention. Going onward, HKTV still has to keep going with its business development. In addition, we have sought out credible legal advice (that informed us) we have a good chance of winning. Therefore, we have decided to apply for a judicial review to continue our fight for a licence through the courts. To our colleagues, I wish everyone could go home and rest for the mean time, so that you will be in good physical and mental condition to fight this long battle with us.

In regard to the speech given by the Chief Executive this morning on free-to-air tv licence, I have the following response: The Chief Executive expressed that the government's responsibility and institutional policy did not allow it "[to reject] no one". In reality, it has been established as early as 1998 that the open broadcasting policy is to "reject no one". It specifies that there is no upper limit to (the number of) licence issued and any organization that met the requirement should be granted a licence.

Yes, a lot of us hongers did go back, but in a lot of my friends' cases they have families and businesses back in HK/China so already they have a head start. For me it was because I found a good job in HK that didn't come with the normal trappings of a typical HK job (i.e. insane hours, little benefits, etc). But the people that went to Van for the most part are not representative of the people protesting on the streets; generally speaking the people that were able to move are at the very least the middle class of HK, and subsequently with a Western upbringing (if you're not from Richmond), bluntly speaking you're ahead of the curve should you go back to HK meaning we get the better jobs with better pay.

I'll go even farther to say that this group of ours is at times elitist, out of touch, nor indifferent about the goings on in HK. My group of friends her really never discuss the current social issues of HK, many of them simply plan their next vacation back to Van and then instagram pics from Guu. For someone like me for example I am perhaps jaded enough to see that regular protests don't work, and that more "high level" political tactics need to be employed by the people.

The thing is with HKers they've never really had a say in politics up until '97, and you see in the news how immature and ineffective some party's antics are. And they're competing with the Chinese government, a gov who's had more than 50 years of running shit. How the hell are HKers supposed to win.

Long story short, I think a lot of us come back for a job or the Asia experience for a bit, but when push comes to shove or when people start having kids, we'll run back to Van. Maybe people from Toronto would have a different story

TL;DR - Asia is better only short term, and Hongers from Van are above most of HK's "problems"

Protests in the past were somewhat effective, because they had a chief executive that cared solely for HK. Now they have CY, whom we obviously see is controlled by the China gov't.

It truly is a shame that they were denied.

People on am1470 frequently talk about this, and are usually quite furious. Especially certain DJ's that used to be in the HK television industry.

A slow process of replacing the govt is fine, with the exception of attempted cultural assimilation. And even then, nothing should even start taking place until starting in 2047 at the earliest. Even if they do the exact same thing they are doing now, it is way too early.

Now you have generations being born into this atmosphere, and tensions are rising. If they continue this path it's only going to get worse.

The fucked up thing is that CY is supposed to be the man for the people, having not grown up rich he used that to run against Henry Tang. Granted Henry fucked up with his mansion scandal, but either way CY was supposed to be different.

CY didn't have to campaign about anything. Any campaigning would have been for nothing other than to try to appease the people, who don't have a say in the election.

He was Beijing's second choice, as their first choice had way too many controversies.. CY isn't without his own of course, but either way it wouldn't have made a difference. Neither man represents Hong Kong's interests in the least.

So, HKTV has officially moved forward with a Judicial review of the HK Government's decision to reject HKTV's FTA licence.

So guess who will be reviewing and deciding this Judicial review?

That's right! The HK government. The same panel that rejected HKTV from the get-go.

LOL!

HK politics is such a joke.

IMO there should be extra lines for "Self censorship of news" for the other 3 channels. And I think this is the most important issue of all for keeping HKTV off the air.

Shares of Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV) surged as much as 25 per cent in morning trading in Hong Kong on Monday, boosted by news that its mobile television service will be launched in the middle of next month.

It closed the day at HK$2.81, up 17.6 per cent, while the benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 1.1 per cent.

HKTV boss Ricky Wong Wai-kay said television programmes would reach the audience through the internet on computers, smartphones and on television sets if the users attached an extra set-top box. HKTVs advertising prices would be close to those of the free-to-air television stations operated by TVB, he said.

Wong estimated the size of the audience for the mobile television service, only available in Hong Kong, would be at least 500,000.

HKTV will provide 6.5 hours of programming a day at first, with users allowed to watch them free if they register their age, gender, email address and income level with the broadcaster.

The company applied for a free-to-air television licence at the end of 2009 but the application was turned down last year. Since then Wong has been focusing on launching mobile and internet television. He had earlier hoped to launch the service in July.

Ricky Wong (王維基) announced that he will be launching a mobile and online television service for HKTV in November, during TVB Anniversary month.

HKTV, which had failed to obtain a free-to-air television license from the Hong Kong government, will broadcast programs via the OTT (Over-the-Top) format online. The programs, which include variety shows and dramas, will be available for Hong Kong audiences through Smart TV, computers, and HKTV’s mobile app. It is expected that audiences for HKTV will reach at least 500,000 people in Hong Kong.

An official date for the service’s launching has not been revealed yet, but it is rumored that Ricky Wong plans to unveil the service on November 19, the day of TVB’s Anniversary. An HKTV representative said, “We will announce the launch date when it is the right time.”

In addition, HKTV will start a public poll for netizens to choose the station’s debut drama. HKTV has already completed filming series such as Police Boundaries <警界線> starring Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智); Choose Your Battle <選戰> starring Angelica Lee (李心潔); and Flow of the Years <歲月樓情> starring Felix Wong (黃日華).

Artistes Comment on HKTV’s Launch

Felix Wong’s daughter, Adrian Wong (黃芷晴), expressed, “That’s good! I filmed some variety shows before and I’m very excited myself. It’s been two years already! If our productions can be released in November, then I will be able to show everyone my performances. I’ve filmed three dramas, and one was Brain Detective <開腦儆探>, which was with my father. I also filmed My Mother is a Black Rose <我阿媽係黑玫瑰> with Kara Hui (惠英紅) and another series called Final Days +5 <末日+5>. Of course, I’m most looking forward to the drama I filmed with my father!”

Leung Kin Ping (梁健平) expressed his excitement and said, “Of course, I’m thrilled to hear this! We all hope that our productions will be broadcasted for the public to enjoy. We’ve been waiting for so long!”

Zoey Sham (岑潔儀), who is six months pregnant, said, “There’s been a lot of sad news recently. This news is definitely the happiest I’ve heard in eight days! Many Hong Kong citizens support the launch of HKTV. We’ve all waited for two years. Now I’m even going to have a baby! I’m glad that my kids will have more [viewing] options to choose from!”

I am a huge fan of the TVB series of the 90's, and most of the current HKTV drama series are popular actors/actresses of the 90's that don't work with TVB anymore. So depending on how long she's been watching TVB, she should recognize most of the actors, or better yet, ask her if she wants it?

TOKYO/HONG KONG -- HKTV will launch an online shopping business that will let Asian consumers buy items that appear in their favorite dramas and other content.

The video production and distribution company will start the business in Hong Kong this November, with plans to enter mainland China and Southeast Asia, Chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay told The Nikkei at the company's headquarters. It aims to become the biggest shopping website in Hong Kong, he said.

HKTV has been seeking to enter the broadcasting business, and is already offering an action-packed crime drama on YouTube, generating more than 5.4 million views in a year. And a political drama featuring a Malaysian-born actress has been getting buzz even before distribution.

The company will create dramas featuring food, apparel and other products from tenant companies of its shopping website and distribute them to smartphones and tablets.

While watching the dramas, viewers can purchase the products through a website shown on the screen.

In establishing this business model, HKTV took its cues from the growing Chinese trend of consumers basing shopping and traveling excursions around popular dramas and films. A South Korean drama boom, for example, led to higher imports of food and cosmetics from that country. And when a drama shot in Hokkaido became a hit, fans eagerly visited the northernmost island of Japan.

Product placement is becoming increasingly prevalent in movies, TV shows and other programming. In the latest installment of the Transformer film series from Hollywood, items from Chinese sponsors appeared often.

This marketing technique can be used to great effect when a drama is shown online and goes viral. Restricted online distribution under Japan's strict video copyrights is said to prevent product placement from spreading.

As an international financial center, Hong Kong boasts high income levels and has spawned new trends as a popular tourism destination. But for consumer goods companies, sky-high rents have impeded store openings.

Using HKTV's shopping website can cut sales costs compared with setting up brick-and-mortar shops, Wong said.

Besides mainland China, HKTV is looking to market the new service in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore -- home to large communities of ethnic Chinese, who are keen on Hong Kong-made videos. When it opens, the shopping site is expected to offer upward of 100,000 items from more than 200 tenants based in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and elsewhere.

In fact, more than 10 Japanese companies have already signed up, including Japan Post Trading Service, which offers region-specific food and other goods through the post office network. 47Club, an online partnership of regional newspaper companies offering local specialties, is preparing to set up shop as well.

Women's apparel company Baroque Japan has also thrown its hat in the ring, while leading fashion companies World and Onward Kashiyama, as well as Bigi and other midsize players, have similar plans.

The stronger purchasing power of Asian consumers will lead to greater demand for Japanese food and apparel, said Wong, one of a new generation of business leaders who have been challenging regulations in Hong Kong society. The 52-year-old enjoys overwhelming support among the young.

He founded City Telecom in 1992, which led to sharply lower prices for fixed-line communication and Internet services, which were dominated by big conglomerates back then.

After he sold the communication business in 2012, Wong transformed the company into a production studio and plotted an entry into terrestrial TV broadcasting, which had been controlled by two players. While it had been deemed most likely to obtain licensing approval, the first in about four decades, it was the only one of three applicants to be denied.

HKTV reapplied this April, and plans to invest 3.45 billion Hong Kong dollars ($444 million) over the first six years.

The polls are officially open so go to HKTV's webpage (HKTV (http://www.hktvmall.com/#voting)) and VOTE!!!!

By the looks of it, so far Battle of Choice has the most votes, followed by Borderline. Personally, I already put my vote in for Borderline (since I've been waiting to watch the rest of that series since HKTV aired the first episode on Youtube last year).

Voting ends 11/9 and the results will be announced on 11/10.

Yeah I feel a bit of the same way too. A lot of the same faces in many dramas, BUT they are just starting out, hopefully they will add more casts in the coming months.

As for HKTV SmartTV App and Android HKTV app, you're gonna need to use a HK VPN/DNS to program your settings on the TV and Android hardware to make it work. Hola comes to mind as a free option, but HK VPN is the best method.

That won't work, HKTV charges the same rate as TVB (500,000+ HKD per ad) to their advertisers to target only HK audiences. Putting it on Youtube will not make sense.

I can foresee that HKTV will eventually sell their rights to other online distributors such as Dramafever, and Viki for an additional revenue stream.

willystyle

HKTV is only able to sustain 400,000 concurrent connections at any given time. It's safe to say that they've surpassed that with both HK and Oversea viewers (VPN).

Best way to watch it would be to use those "illegal" streaming set-top devices, online streaming, and BT.

If you want to watch it live, I have not found a good solution for this yet, seems like everything out there is either very low quality streams, or high quality streams, but stutters.

I was going to buy the TVpad as well but i ended up getting the Imedia Box yesterday. Played around with it a little bit last night and it seems pretty good.

My friend has the TVpad and i notice it seems to take about 5 seconds to switch from one channel to the other. With the Imedia box, the channel switching seems instantaneous. I Watched a little bit of live TVB and the quality seems decent. They claim it is in HD but doesn't look quite HD to me.... but good enough i suppose. The shows that are available on demand are in SD.

Since Imedia box is running on android it also has XBMC built in. So that's an advantage over the TVPad.

As for clampdowns..who really knows..lol....But i guess that's a risk that we should live with when buying these devices.

Borderline is actually kind of boring...

Currently still watching The Election and To Be Or Not To Be.

willystyle
12-18-2014, 01:27 PM
Borderline still resembles alot like TVB, but again that script was written in 2011 and filmed in 2012 when all the staffs and writers just joined HKTV, so they had not adjusted to HKTV standards. The Election and To Be or Not To Be, is more recently written and filmed, so the filming and cinematography is more up to standard.

By the way, Borderline and The Election will continue and be filmed next year for season 2. Seems like HKTV is taking a page out of American series.

Election needs to be everyday. Too bad it just finished filming like a few weeks ago...

willystyle
12-18-2014, 08:33 PM
They can't show The Election daily cause the series wrapped up recently and they need necessary time for the editing. I'd rather that they take their time and edit it properly than rush it and potentially screw it up.

I use torrents from Chinese sites. If you can read Chinese then PM me for links.
