VPD to replace their Crown Vic's with... Dodge Chargers
Lomac

Yup, you read that right. The VPD will soon be rolling around town in a fleet of brand new Dodge Chargers.
http://i1.wp.com/shawglobalnews.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/new-police-car.jpg
You will soon see a new police car on the Vancouver streets.
Officers have been used to driving the traditional Ford Crown Victoria, but they will be replacing those as Ford has discontinued the car.
The department looked at many different vehicles as possibilities, and the winning vehicle was the Dodge Charger. It has a 3.6-litre engine, and features new safety features such as emergency lighting, and a ‘rumbler’ siren, which projects a deep baritone burst that can be used to attract attention at critical times.
The new car also called for a new design of their graphics.
Vancouver Police say the new Dodge fleet will be equipped with an idle-management program to reduce engine idle time while continuing to power the electronics and emergency equipment when the vehicle is on-scene at an emergency.
The switch to the new car means fuel consumption will be reduced by about 25%. Police say it will also reduce patrol fleet emissions by approximately 660 tonnes (32% reduction) per year when the fleet replacement is completed in 2017.
VPD Fleet at a Glance
the Vancouver Police patrol fleet is composed of 176 vehicles, which are predominantly Ford Crown Victoria Interceptors, both marked and unmarked
the average age of the patrol fleet is 5.5 years
the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors were discontinued by Ford in April
61 patrol vehicles are due for replacement by end of 2013
replacement was delayed to take advantage of new, more environmentally friendly, purpose-built technologies
entire patrol fleet of 176 due for replacement by 2017

Personally I think the Taurus looks terrible as a police car, especially in white. It's a good car but it certainly doesn't make me fear being caught by one. :lol At least the Charger looks relatively badass, especially in black.
Speaking of badass, I realize this is from Transformers but I think the VPD should have gone with this instead:

why is that police cars are always American vehicle?
with exception of undercovered ones..
I think Big 3 have proven enough times how shitty they are, both products and managements.
They do legitimately have one of the worst reputations...yet police forces seem to continue to use American Big 3 vehicles.

Seems kind of useless, considering the fact that there are rarely any instances where the difference in power output between the two models would make a difference, seems like a fine waste of money to me!

They had 2 black Taurus and 2 chargers running around the city for a couple months to let patrol officers see which one was better.
I think the charger are a good choice for city driving because of the V6 and the fuel shut off switch which cuts fuel but keeps electronics running. The paint scheme is iffy; they just followed the body line of the charger...other vehicle would be full black and white. They also have the paddy wagons running on bluetec 3.0L turbo diesel engine.
I think the city had a say though. I've notice COV ain't sticking to fleet Ford anymore. Instead they are buying anything with the words hybrid, electric, or fuel efficient. I just saw a by-law officer driving a Nissan leaf and a construction worker driving a tundra...

I pretty much had a case for a unlawful arrest lawsuit aswell, but it's truly just not worth the trouble.
Based on aesthetics alone, the Taurus looks like a cheap non-intimidating car. I prefer the Chargers.

lol. I just don't want our police force to be like the British. No, I don't want them to be all intimidating and shit, but neither do I want them driving around in Vauxhal Astra diesels with a terrible siren. If I ever got arrested by something like that, I'll still be laughing as they shove me into a jail cell.
Don't get me wrong; I'd still respect the police regardless of what they drove, but I just think life should be slightly more like the movies where police forces actually drive cars that look the part.

Keep in mind that VPD patrol officers do not transport their prisoners. They call for the Paddy Wagon.
RCMP vehicles do have a cage in the back and they transport their own prisoners. Also if RCMP struck a deal with Ford it's probably to help accommodate all the Northern detachments which would use Explorers and not just the Taurus.
From a purely aesthetic point of view, the Dodge Charger is much more appealing.

Keep in mind that all the police departments looking to upgrade from the Crown Vics (which would be all of them since Ford discontinued the line) all have been (or will be) testing out various makes and models of police cruisers. I'm not sure if VPD is the only police department that has settled on a model but don't be surprised if you see a Charger or a Caprice in RCMP/Delta/New West/etc. livery. They're probably just "sample" vehicles decked out so that the police departments can do their evaluation.
I'd think that most of the local municipal police departments will follow the VPD's lead with the Chargers though. You might see the Tauruses with the RCMP as outside of the Lower Mainalnd, that AWD would come in pretty handy in winter.

There are plenty of jurisdictions who use pretty civilian vehicles.
There are examples on RS, like that Hyundai (santa fe?) cop car that pulled people over on HWY1, or the impala that was pulling people over in surrey.
I was pulled over by West Vancouver police just before lions bay on the sea to sky, the cop was in a chevy silverado 2500 with a sled rack and N sign on the back.
Also seen them rolling around in a newish looking dodge ram 2500.
