Hello wheelers..thot i'd take a plunge to put together a nooby/stock friendly 4x4 run. a few of us were discussing and thought it would be nice to bring out as many capable offraoding rigs out to "ELAHO" (just off squamish main).

date: Aug. 18, 2013
Meet time: 0900
meet prior to run: Petro Canada/711 off the hwy (Hwy99 and Garibaldi way)

Pretty much anything is "capable" of Britannia - we saw some guy with a ZIPcar heading down the road past "the deck" to do some shooting in the logged-out area.

Finally... yes pls

A lot of people tend to overestimate the trails (me included). My bro-in-law went on a logging road in a golf and he made through no problem. It was funny because he saw trucks that got stuck along the way.

Would my SX4 with Yokohama Geolanders be able to do this trail?
Manual trans + awd (can switch to awd lock)

A lot of guys from sx4club.com take sx4s offroad...

The only thing is I don't have skid plate or lift kit yet...

so a short cruise around britannia/furry creek and lunch at the deck?

once something is finalized we should post in the social meets section as it gets alot more traffic than here.

maybe others will be interested.

a brief description of the trail, where to meet, what time, etc will be good

disclaimer that some damage and pinstriping could occur is important as well.

i can feel your excitement reach me through the internet and through my monitor, grab me by the shoulders and shake me screaming "IM SO FUCKING EXCITED"

there should be enough recovery equipment and people there so, lunch, drinks, a camera and some spare clothes will probably be all you need. a gps if you want to save the way points for future use.

whoa..this thread caught up quick...lol imma try and answer all the questions as much as possible, but lemme know if i missed out..

-yes its stock friendly (seen smaller suv's go up there too (rav4))
-i will be carrying recovery equipment/tools but others should bring some too just as a precaution.
-drinks/food/bbq stuff is a must
-pinstriping will be present if your not carefull
-i WILL be a weekend (TBA)
-any type of vehicle will make it up with the dry season (smaller cars will have to be slow and steady)

we will not force anyone to do something their not comfortable doing, so if it does come across one of us, then one of us will sure have an extra spot in our car for that individual. this will be a typical day trip if we decide to leave at 10ish. duzn't take long to explore the area. I was thinking MAYBE the first weekend of August...probably a sunday (still under discussion)

Just seen on BCJC:

The Britannia Mine is owned and managed by the Province of British Columbia and is regulated subject to an approved Mines Act permit. Access is restricted and approval to enter onto the mine can only be granted by the Britannia Mine Manager. All other access is considered trespass. This includes access via the Furry Creek Forest Service Road off of the Sea to Sky Highway, as well as access via the gate above the community of Britannia Beach.

Access to the site is restricted to protect both the general public and the mine workers from hazards associated with the abandoned mine infrastructure, as well as the ongoing remedial operations. These operations include site investigations, monitoring programs, road maintenance, road reactivation and deactivation, and the disposal of waste sludge generated by the mine site’s water treatment plant. That sludge is transported via mining trucks from the town site to the top of Jane Basin where it is disposed of at an approved landfill.

Please note that any unauthorized access to a mine, including the Britannia Mine, is a contravention of the Mines Act Regulation and Code and is considered an offence under the Act. An offence is liable to fines and penalties.

If a day meet (10am-7pm?) weekend meet ever happens, I’d love to push the CRV a little just to see what it can take. Really don’t feel comfortable going alone, and I don’t know the roads. If any of the true 4 wheelers are still interested in doing this, I would try and show up for sure.

i dont recommend going anywhere for the first time alone.

thats just my opinion, you dont have to actually listen to it.

and by solo i meant alone as in just yourself. you can go in one vehicle but i suggest bringing some friends who can get out to help push or stack rocks or do whatever if something arises.

safety in numbers, etc

This is an easy trek just logging roads but there are a bunch off trails that leads into wherever. There is a place called elaho sandbar where we can actually drive on if water is low. I've never been up that far but I've heard it can be pretty fun. Can test ur vehicle pretty good. More of an exploring trip/cruise. Lots of great views and picture opportunity. you'll be fine, just need to go slow, i'd suggest running second last in the line with an experienced person picking up the tail end.

that way you wont impede the flow of traffic for the more capable vehicles as things come up and the experienced person at the very end can help incase something happens.

Talked to my neighbour (he's with Forestry), got all the details as to which bridges to cross to get to the waterfall (I always seem to forget), plus the beach you can drive down onto, right up top the river. Its a ways up the valley, but the reward should be worth the drive

Doubt that helped  but between five or six attempts to just get past the bottom of "the short way" up from Hale, and then getting bitchslapped by "the moguls" up the other way... I think they took a pretty good beating just trying to get home :heckno:

Not that the shocks were in very good shape to begin with...

haha like we always say...we pay to play...time for some upgrades! :fuckyea:

Yeah, buddy of mine got a screamin' deal on some nice adjustable gas shocks for his Previa, from rockauto.com... I checked it out, and yeah, the prices are insane (in a good way)... and so is the shipping (NOT in a good way). :P

Right now I'm generally surviving on bartering for used parts in at least decent condition. *sigh*

:lol I took my old Oldsmobile Alero offroading up in Naramata one year. An H2 got stuck ahead of me and I simply passed by him. He was a little pissed about that lol

And, hey, if I can go full speed down Triangle Beach while racing a dirt bike in my slammed Accord... hrm... :drunk:

Maybe I'll make a trek down and bring the Blazer. Or finally buy that SUV off of a fellow member and take that for a spin on this drive... :fullofwin:

Three weeks into the discussion and 12 days before hand, you and one other change the location because it will "probably be better".

This is why GTGs and Social Meets fail all the time - lack of organization. Get a plan, organize, stick to the plan, success.

I dunno which other social meets you have been to that fail, but I know for sure that this meet will still be going on wether or not 2 people show up.
I'm changing the location for a much better experience for all you guys. Be thankful that me and Mike decided to put something like this together.

New location is Chilliwack River Valley.
Meeting at tim hortons off of 200 st in Langley right by the hwy.
We are still meeting at 0900. Nothing Major has really changed its still going to be a good time.
Honestly I don't see anything wrong with this.
We're headed into chilliwack up to some nice view points and to end the trip were driving towards Foley Lake.
Roads are fine, gravel roads some pot holes but nothing too crazy.

Foley Lake: The Horror! May 22nd 2010 (http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=35265)

about mid way down.

thats pretty much what it looks like every time i've gone.

its like stave or hale during grad season.

edit:

also, my 2 cents are, if a consensus was made and a destination chosen then it should be stuck with. changing locations on a whim is annoying. if there was a legit reason for a change in venue like the closure of the forest service road or whatever then fair enough.

elaho/squish valley is a good day out and alot more fun than chilliwack valley. i've driven up folley, chipmunk and the entire length of the chilliwack fsr. gets boring. great views but gets boring. more of a sunday drive with the wife type place.

We will leave it as planned for Elaho Valley. If people are not happy with the changes we will try and accommodate everyone as best as we can. Honestly if we go to elaho or foley it don't really matter. But if people have problems with changes the that's fine we will stick with original plan. I just thought it would better. Didn't think people would be so bitter about it.

You'll have to thank her for me! Awesome pics. I can't imagine how long that took. I was angry at Photobucket and I uploaded 32...

The day started with Phil being too cool to air down with us:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000799_zps5d228fff.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000799_zps5d228fff.jpg.html)

Followed by spectacular BC scenery as to be expected:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000800_zpsd5601eab.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000800_zpsd5601eab.jpg.html)

We stopped to take some pictures of the bee bridge of death:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000813_zpsdfa24b6c.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000813_zpsdfa24b6c.jpg.html)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000821_zps275d6583.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000821_zps275d6583.jpg.html)

Hundreds, maybe millions of bees made their home in/under/around that bridge and they weren't pleased that we were interrupting them. I think we managed to get away with only one sting (to the forehead) and the loss of our dignity from the bee avoidance/swatting dance that we were all doing. Our dance did not appease the bee gods so we carried on our way.

During a brief stop at a roadside waterfall I took this shot, in my sole attempt to be artsy rather than simply holding my blackberry out the window of my moving vehicle hoping the image stabilization was going to clear up my photos, of which sadly the bumpy road took it's toll on. I miss having such a photogenic vehicle:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000830_zpsb2114de3.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000830_zpsb2114de3.jpg.html)

We eventually made it to Peaches and Cream Falls:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000850_zps36dca85a.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000850_zps36dca85a.jpg.html)

Very refreshing regardless of the weather not really calling for a refreshing water spray. After the falls we headed down to a sandbar on the Elaho river to have some lunch. This was our first opportunity to really see some mud:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000872_zps8f9a51b9.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000872_zps8f9a51b9.jpg.html)

Down at the river we took some photos and fooled around a bit:

While the 4Runner, Cherokee, Frontier, AND CX-7 WUT went sailing, a documentary crew managed to get this prime shot of the Jeep Wrangler in it's natural habitat:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000890_zps42051225.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000890_zps42051225.jpg.html)
(and I don't mean a mall parking lot this time)

BBC Nature also got this picture of the lurking Frontier (which means Lion in Swahilią), waiting to pounce on it's unsuspecting prey:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000887_zps6609dbdf.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000887_zps6609dbdf.jpg.html)

And how exciting, here we see it splashing around attempting to intimidate it's competition, the Toyota:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000895_zps2cc3d026.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000895_zps2cc3d026.jpg.html)

The unflappable 4Runner is unfazed however:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000899_zps8e09d3b2.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Squamish%20and%20Elaho%20CSI%20RS%20SUV%20NCIS/IMG_00000899_zps8e09d3b2.jpg.html)

I'm reasonably certain that Phil gets stuck like this (maybe not quite like this) on a semi-regular basis but this time he had the misfortune to do it in front of a bunch of RS'ers with cameras:

Mine are mostly taken from such an angle that you can't see the fact that part of my passenger side fender flare is missing. Automotive myspace angles... Was there salmon in that river?

No. Its far above any salmon spawning grounds. You will find some river trout tho.

brianrietta how hardcore are you into amateur radio?

Not exceedingly, I haven't even put a rig in the new 4Runner yet. It's a 1/4 a hobby (who doesn't like gadgets), 1/4 clear trail communication, 1/2 a better way of calling out of the bush when I solo trip. Academically radio and antenna theory, signal propagation, etc are quite interesting to me as well though. I remember when I was a kid over on the island at my uncle's cabin we were able to chat with a guy in Maine one night which was obviously pretty cool and that piqued my interest in it.

We used to go sit up on Skyline Drive or Queen E. and talk skip to guys all over the states on our CBs back in the day... even got a trucker in S. Carolina for a little while once. Knew one guy who claimed he stuck his magmount to a carbide-tip saw blade, set it in the wet dewy grass, and talked to Hawaii. Skip is fun :)

Yeah, it's fascinating. I think my uncle's furthest contact was a lady in Scotland on 10m. He said that it's a good thing that they had a really clear signal because he could just barely understand her accent. :lawl:
