They probably use the mail to apply for credit cards. Then they bust open the mail boxes again when they are delivered.

the police were contacted but they basically said back what do you want us to do

^^and yes they use it for credit card fraud. so if this happens to you be aware of that

Have fun if you live in a complex with that type of mail box, you can use hammer alone and pry them open, we had one that was damaged on our job site and Canada post wouldn't take it back so we locked it up and tried to open it, if you had a full sized crowbar and a hammer your in In 10 seconds

One thing I learnt playing around with surveillance cameras.. the only way you get good pictures that is recognizable is put the camera right up front and close to the subject. I know it will have to go through strata etc.. but add a camera right at the mailbox is a good move for the future. (just like at banks, you guys do know those height ruler things are not for your own benefit right?). From that angle you can't tell really that much.

So there are at least 3 people in the gang, driving a Ford Mustang coupe with 4 round headlights with fogs and chromed wheels... ala Surrey special.

how can this be prevented?

not sure, these boxes are issued by Canada post, and are to my understanding the only ones they issue for complexes like townhouses etc. where there is no indoor common room

we've built 6 projects in the last 3 years and everytime we've been issued these same boxes. Hell, if you really wanted it bad enough you could probably rip the whole box out of the wall, there's only 4 security screws that hold them in unless they add additional moulding etc. around the bottom edges [which im not sure is even allowed by canada post]

only way id say is have signs for camera monitoring, cameras, motion sensing lights, etc.

A drill works too. Just drill the lock and you can open it no problems.

Have the strata add a locked gate around the mailboxes.

Or pick up your mail daily before the thieves get to it.

how can this be prevented?

1.Don't use your mailbox but a PO box?
2.Live in a house that is not in a new development? (They hit these boxes because of the reward ratio).

I guess you can catch the entrance to make it harder.. (it looks like they hit around 5-6 in the morning?)

Even if you catch them, there will be a new crew doing their territory. To me it look just like those groups that drop South Americans at neighbourhoods that will have garbage pick up the next day, to go through their recycling.

How exactly can they obtain a credit card from your mail? Dont they need a lot of personal info and security questions to hack into your finances.

let me give u an extreme scenario, my complexes' mailbox got broken into, TWICE... first time nth much happened, but the 2nd time, the fking thieves stole a lot from me, not a lot of mail, but a lot of money. here's how it all went down.

one day i went to get my drivers license replaced, the very next week the mailbox got broken into. i guess coincidentally my drivers license was in the mail box too. what did they do with my drivers license? went to my bank, request a new debit card, and took money. according to the notes left on my profile, the teller told me the thief walked in with my id, impersonated me saying i lost my wallet, requested a replacement debit card, and also changed my pin on the spot "just to be safe" cus of the lost debit card. the thief proceeded to withdraw $15K cash advance on my visa via 3-4 visits during a period of 1 week.

i didnt know all this was happening until a week later when i tried my dabit card at an atm. then they talked to me about what happened.

This is why I don't like the pictures on current DL's. With a full-color picture the thief is going to have to find someone who looks a lot like you, and that's not always easy to have a large pool of fellow thieves you can try to match a DL picture to. The current digitized B&W pics are crap. So are the signatures.

As gYU mentioned, did you get your money back? I would have expected the bank to ask a few security questions beyond just having your DL (my bank, for example, has asked me to list a few transactions I made recently for verification).

This is along the lines of what I thought the banks/CC companies should do: when you open an account your picture is taken and stored on the banks computer. Whenever a teller brings up your account your picture also comes up. I personally would have no problem with the bank having my mug shot - they know just about everything else about me anyway. For POS/CC terminals the picture would briefly show up on the stores hand-held terminal (say for purchases over $100) when your CC is used. The merchant could look at it while printing off the receipts from the terminal and the picture disappears as soon as printing is done. To increase security your picture would only be sent to the terminal when the transaction is approved (so crooks couldn't just swipe your card all over the place to get a good look at your picture).

Ahhh, I'm rambling. The CC companies won't do this. Although they lose billions in fraud, it's apparently not too serious of a problem for them since they aren't spending money to install these types of measures.

Yes the bank did credit me the amount of money that was taken from me. What pissed me off was how easily the bank allowed everything to happened, although in the end i didnt loose any money, it was a big hassle to cancel n fix everything. Whats even more pissing is i went to the richmond rcmp with all the paper work the bank gave me stating all the fraud transactions to file a police report n the rcmp just shrug me off n said these paper work doesnt prove anything...

How effective are GPS trackers? Setup a honeypot for these assholes. I really want to see Alfred E Neuman busted.

They are very easy and can be effective.. something like this: Mini SPY Vehicle CAR GPS GSM GPRS Realtime Tracker Drive TK102B Support TF Card | eBay

Technically they are easy to use, put in a sim card, call the phone and that's it. Logistically not so much.. eg are you going to stay up night after night? What if you are at work?

Another problem with a mailbox is it is metal, it makes a pretty good faraday charge. A tracker not properly configured will have GPS and the cell phone in polling mode all the time, drinkup up juice.. so you have to charge it every day etc. Requires dedication and chances are one group of thieves come, it will be replaced with another. The solution is not to put your mail in such vulnerable position, get a secure PO box and just skip this mailbox.

Lived in Surrey all my life, never once have I been robbed or experienced theft in my home or my vehicle. 2 motorcycles in the garage with keys in them at all times...mail comes to my home in an unsecured mailbox....we have an alarm system installed but never had the need to use it. 28 years and counting....no problems.

Thief #1 uses his bare hands. No gloves = fingerprints and contact DNA. Surrey RCMP = busy and would not fingerprint or swab for DNA for this.

I say spread the video out everywhere as much as you can and someone will recognize these goofs.

UPDATE AGAIN

So this retard tried depositing the paycheck again at a different branch but at a atm inside it this time. RCMP called my friend, officer didnt catch him but will follow up tuesday when he is back on he said.

When he went to the bank he had said he was a employee of my friend and had another excuse along with it. So beware if this happens to you they may keep trying and eventually get it. And who knows you may have never known you had a check in the mail so always get it everyday!
